Dragonball Z

I liked it up to the end of the Cell Saga, it should have ended there. At least then we wouldn't have the nonsense that the Buu saga introduced.

Nope, Boo arc had Toriyama's groove back.

If allowing two kids to have ssj with no effort, once again making Goku the star of the show (despite the touching scene of him bidding gohan farewell), using gohan's plot potential once again and delegating anyone who wasn't saiyan into comic relief is Toriyama's groove I'd rather he lose it again.

Goten and Trunks becoming ssj is a gag and if I recall being ssj is just 50 million times your own power and since they are kids they still have no real power like Goku, hell Goten was a ssj and had no clue on how to fly.=]

Toriyama took years to make Gohan into the new main hero and when he finally got there he realized Son Goku was a better main hero, just as well since the Cell arc killed Gohan's character.

And since when was any character who wasn't a Saiya-jin not comic relief, well there is Tenshinhan but he never became comic relief he was always a boring character. Oh and Goten and Trunks for being Saiya-jin they sure were 100% comic relief.

@eroeru I am still right about Gantz and I think you are over thinking it, since the guy who makes it has said he writes Gantz like a B-Horror movie with not much of a plot.

But take any seinen that is juvenile and my point still stands.

I also hope when you get to the end of Dragon Ball you will want to watch DBZ in Japanese just to see how different it is from the dub and your kid memories of it.

@GodWood Hope you like Vagabond and Vinland Saga I had thought you may like those two.

@ohter people Kenshin is in no way a good history manga/anime it has a very bad problem with realism and isn't that it's too real or not very real, it is in regards to how poorly balanced it's sense of realism is. It will carefully depict things like Okubo Toshimichi and his assassination, then turn around and have wacky X Men inspired fodder villains the size of houses who spit fire.=]

Yes, you're right. As am I. :)

By the way B-movies can be very good, and rich in content.
(and well, I don't know if it was overthinking that let me enjoy the series, but if it was -which I doubt because it was both a feeling and an explanation/idea that I enjoyed - then that doesn't make overthinking a bad thing... on the contraire)

edit: You're certainly not in the right about calling Gantz vomit xD

Vinland Saga (the one I have decided to start with) has got my name written all over it. I absolutely adore Viking/Germanic history and culture and it's written by Makoto Yukimuru who shares my level of persnicketiness.

That is bad. :D

I've only seen the anime, and that had things more in place.

Watched it 2 years ago, so I might not praise it as highly at the moment (...excuses follow) - but there certainly was more to the series than plain sex and violence, for me.

PS If you successfully imagine the scene to a dream where you're in prime emotions, then the scene can be very believable - music and tempo adds to it alot that the manga cannot/doesn't. Besides, the main character was the only one like that - others were simplistic and crude as well, but with other aspects to them.

edit: I might settle for Gantz being vomit... but then it is highly underrated vomit.

Oh, I read all the available chapters a few days ago without barely having time to eat. Had just finished rereading Berserk too and was looking for something similar so that felt totally awesome  Not really digging the direction of the most recent chapters though but it seems to be taking a turn for the better soon if I'm not way off.

Other characters can be just as bad. One time this character http://gantz.wikia.c...Reika_Shimohira made a clone of Kurono just beacuse she can't be with the real one and no duh Clone Kurono is worse than the real one. The very next chapter he is about to rape her, we get this page http://www.mangafox....ntz/c299/7.html they are now living happily together...

I say take whatever you got out of the anime and keep away from the manga unless you want to read it for the lulz like I am.=]

I think I might take that challenge. Will post back on it.

As far as the few pages you linked go, it's pure B-movie hilarity indeed, but then it is still not vomit or an insult, but a rather different beast. :)

Good luck and I am one of the only people who gets that it's B-movie like and read it for what it is but that still does not make it good.

By the way, how did you get started on anime and manga?

Was it the Barefoot Gen you mention on the "childhood belief" topic?

Yeah that and Pokemon and DBZ and ohter stuff way back as a kid, I got into manga at book stores(there is a great one in New York that has Japanese volumes) and the internet.

First manga I ever got was Cardcptor Sakura, the art had been flipped and some of the story had edits but I did not know at the time, did not even know what manga was back then.

Yup, probably.
But I'd vouch for Macross Frontier.

(though I personally prefer Neon Genesis Evangelion to all other anime, Macross should be more similar to Geass and Eureka, both of which I was not able to enjoy)

I personally dislike it. I played practically every great RPG that there ever was made (except Fallout 1, but that will soon be corrected) - but not any of the Final Fantasies - for one reason that its a 'wired' anime.

I mean i like 'wired' things actually - Shadowman, Planescape Torment, Sacrifice, etc... But i view anime often as naive and foolish, and those are the things i just outright hate in person. Not to mention absolutely ridicules look of some characters that completely put me off - females look like they are 10 years old with Pamela Anderson 'meshes' + the BIG eyes - i would have no problem if they have meshes of Pamela Anderson but dose`t look like they are ten. Its giving me impression that all of the anime makes are pedophiles. And males look like they are all transexuals, while the older guys are all copy of that 'master' guy from Karate Kid or Kill Bill.

I think the only character i actually ever liked with "anime" style was Dante from Devil May Cry, and even that is pushing it.

Seriously what anime have you been watching? Obviously not enough variety that's for sure. They are not all the same as you claim. Different studios and directors have different styles and also it depends on the genre too. A lot of people claim to know anime around here by watching Harem or even hentai. And that represents a small part of the whole medium.
It's the same as me saying I hate all western animation because they' all look identical and are for kids.

I've seen enough - Pokemon (allmost all of the parts - movie i think only second one thoughl), Sailormoon(was it called like that? Girls in uniforms fighting 'evil'), then some sport anime forget the name now. I have made sure i know what i am dealing with before making my judgement. I am not saying none of the anime movies, serials, games, etc.. would`t be to my liking, but so far i have`t seen any and now i am not even looking for it.

Again Sailor Moon and Pokemon are both from the same genre of kids anime and the ones you saw were most likely the english dubs where about half the content has been cut because it wasn't kid friendly.
The best place to start is anime such as Ghost in the Shell(both movie and series), Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust and possibly also Trigun.

You've seen all of Pokemon and you dind't like it? o.O
Why did you watch it then? I for one skipped it entirely - I can't stand a single episode. But I love anime. (also haven't seen sailor moon, and doubtful if I ever will).

Andarthiel gave good recommendations. Also, I've heard lots of good things about Death Note from people who usually don't watch anime, nor any TV-animation for that matter.

If you're in for some real heavy stuff, then take Paranoia Agent, or NGE. FLCL is also good in this fashion, so is Gurren Lagann (though that one can take some time to take used to).

There are loads of other suggestions, as the Japanese animation scene actually is really diverse. If you want more, and would specify your tastes, people here could give lots more to look into.

edit: Berserk is another winner, and so is Hunter X Hunter, the older one.

.....................................

But for another topic - the last Dragon Ball I saw earlier today was spectacular. It was episode 56 - Strange Visitor - and features all the goofie goodness of the start of the series, maybe even more of it. (it's the episode where Goku and Blue have just arrived at Penguin Village... man, that was some good eye-widening comic relief going on there)

Because i was 12 and everyone in my school loved it, and they all played pokemon gameboys games (or similar mini consoles). And i hated it all - mewtwooooooo - strongest pokemon, then those 4 primal pokemons (something like Phoenix was one of them), Onyx, pikachu, charizard(that was my favored pokemon actually - i love dragons), Ash that guy was fail and that girl that was constantly following him, i forget her name - she was like every girl in our base school, i hated her too. But then, i am a Dark Lord so i had to hate a lot.

And yeah, i forget to mention Dragonball Z too, that was too very popular back then - the main guy was called Goku i think and he had that wired hairstyle with hairs standing up and shoting bolts of energy from his hands. Was like Mortal Kombat for kids.

That is the American version of it... ;)

All in all, I can well-relate with what you said. Shows like Pokemon etc, are not, however, anime by me. They're a disgrace (in a mellow meaning of the word), especially when dubbed.

Well in the case of DBZ, I don't blame you. That was one of the worst anime to come out of japan. 50 episodes of charging up followed by another 50 of trash talk. And the lore, the settings and characters were so ridiculous I just could not take it seriously.

There was never 50 episodes of charging up or trash talk and the point is to not take it seriously, it's a gag manga/anime.

If eroeru can take the time to find out what Dragon Ball really is, you should too.
