After looking at a few; I've decided I hate anime cosplay unless it's a girl.

 

Dudes just can't pull it off.

 

Well... at least not with most characters. Perhaps it's because I just can't picture most of these as Asian.

I heard Tomoyo's VN ending is the one that will make you cry the most.

Someone who doesn't watch subs can watch the Clannad dub and like it, most of the key characters have decent voicework. The problem lies in some of the secondary cast not sounding their age but that's passable for the most part.

I actually really liked the Japanese VA's (Nagisa and Ushio in particular). Its hard for me to judge a good dub vs a good sub because at this point its hard to picture the characters with different voices, but I understand thats just me and would not apply to the person I want to show it to. I will probably just go with the dubs unless someone tells me its significantly different or ruins any scenes/characters.

 

This person I want to show it to cries so easily in stories, Clannad would crush her emotionally I just want to taste those delicious tears.

I have to admit, the poster/wallpaper that was here before realllllllyyyy put me off watching Clannad. But I have to say, it's one of the best decisions I've made these past two weeks. It's great fun to watch, nothing cheesy and if all else fails there is always Akio.

 

Though I wish there were more male characters to balance stuff out a little. But After Story is a wider plot in terms of setting, so you'll get to see more faces each time.

 

Once you get to the second half the story starts focusing on a different set of side characters, I felt the male/female presence balanced out a bit more at that point.

 

Speaking of which, your pretty much right at that point. I'm interested to hear what you think of the next part of the series compared to what came before. Its kind of funny, you can pretty much tell the exact scene that the story starts to change.

 

I put off watching Clannad for months after I originally intended to, now I am kicking myself in the ass for ever thinking I wouldn't like it. Its Madoka Magica all over again. Although its sort of nice going in with lower expectations and getting blown away.

I guess that depends what you consider to be weird and dumb. It does have a purpose for being in the story, that much Ill say.

Personally I didn't like it, it's probably my least favorite part of the series. I mean, I enjoyed it--it's animation was fantastic--but I disliked it as part of the story and the elements within.

 

Clannad felt great as a "human" story, it had elements of the supernatural but it was still great at being "human". Fuko's ghostness didn't hurt the wedding plot, it amplified it--especially when even Tomoya and Nagisa forget about her as well--but it existed, I couldn't ignore it. Same thing with the cat subplot, that was great and resolved itself quickly despite making not meaning much in the end.

 

However, I didn't care much for the "other world" plot. Nagisa dreamt of it, Tomoya was aware of it probably through his own dreams and the end reveal that it's both Ushio and Tomoya was just... weird? It wasn't necessarily terrible, it just felt like they had to tie it into the main plot somehow and used it to make Tomoya have a happy ending.

Clannad would've been 10/10 for me if it showed that Tomoya learned to move on from Nagisa, forgave his father and tried to be a good father himself only for life to intervene into his affairs again. Would it have been depressing? Of course. I just wanted to see Tomoya learn to accept that he wouldn't have taken back the past decade, no matter what had happened and he would've moved on even after losing everything. The show touches this but then goes "lol happy ending".

 

I can't really blame Kyoto for this though, they animated Key's VN as well as they could. Wish they would've covered the "lights" plot point more, though. The whole ending comes out of the left field far more in the anime than the visual novel.

I do actually agree on most points. In some ways it felt a little out of place. I know Clannad had some supernatural aspects but most of what made it so emotional was how the characters would deal with real life problems. It was the same thing with Welcome to the NHK, sure the show could be out there and nutty but it was how relatable and realistic it managed to make most of the characters that left such a strong impression on me after I finished.

 

On the otherhand I don't think they could have effectively done much else after Ushio died (so close to the ending at least) that would have left the audience feeling even remotely emotionally satisfied, which in a series like Clannad does matter. Sure, I admit it was a complete 180 in terms of feels, but it was a damned satisfying change. Besides Ive watched so much of Gen Urobuchi's stuff lately that I think I need a break from these endings that show me just how cruel and soul crushing the world really is.

 

On the plus side it managed to completely and effectively destroy my emotional well being before I realized it would end up being a happy ending, so its not a complete loss.

 

As a standalone, completely ignoring its effect on the main plot, I really liked the 'other world' story it for its style and tone. The world has a kind of sad beauty to it that I found pretty artistic and it never really overstayed its welcome since it rarely was longer then 30ish seconds.

 

Man, its so nice being able to type without worrying about accidently spoiling things for people skimming through the thread.

Who's to say that Nagisa and Ushio would die again in such a tragic cause at all? I would be lying if I claimed i fully understand the rules behind the magic, I would like to think at the very least Nagisa and Ushio won't die of sickness so young but even that I can't say for certain.

 

I don't think Tomoya could just move on after that point. He mourned Nagisa for 5 years and only started to move on because of Ushio. At best he would bury himself in work, but chances are he would fall deep into drinking and smoking. I guess they could have gone for more of a bittersweet ending by instead focusing on the lives of the people Tomoya and Nagisa touched, though I'm not sure if I would have liked that better.

 

Granted I think what your saying would have been much more realistic, just very unsatisfying emotionally which I still feel was important.

 

Good point about Tomoya's father though, the ending does effectively remove the resolution he had with him, and I did feel that was relatively important to the series. It is still possible for them to reconcile, although I do think that Tomoya losing Nagisa helped him to understand what his father actually went through.
