Hellsing?

 

If you like watching a monster tearing down people in displays of ultra-violence, then it's the show for you.

It does have some interesting moments, but overall, I wasn't too impressed.

 

The series seems more toned down in the violence department compared to the OVA, and frankly, I prefer it that way.

Saw a Shinsekai Yori post earlier. Yep the show is full of plot holes. But can someone tell me, what does: "The power of imagination is what changes everything." mean in the context of the show? Saki is far from imaginative, and just bumbles around half the time.

and im not really sure if the "power of imagination" thing is supposed to be taken in the context of the show. for one thing I doubt the society outlined in ssy would encourage thinking outside the box; but more importantly some fiction authors (famous or not), will reference that what they are doing makes a difference, because some people deride what they are doing as having no impact on the real world. I don't agree with that sentiment, in fact I think some of the most powerful social commentaries have come from fiction (one flew over the cuckoos nest, Fahrenheit 451, to kill a mockingbird, etc) and of course the ssy novel/anime is one huge social commentary. my thoughts, not sure if they are right, but I really see no way for the placard in the school to be connected to the show directly... not to mention there are children laughing in the background, which never happened before in the anime, so it should give you heads up that this was out of context.

Eh, I've read so many good things about Shinsekai Yori, the watching the characters grow up aspect especially. Started it last summer, I really loved the sinister, spooky start. Then the school trip happened. Pretty much lost interest there after a few episodes.

I hated that part originally, infact I hated the monster rats in general, thought they were bland and boring. Having finished the series I can honestly say my opinion on them has drastically changed, which genuinely surprises me. It's worth sticking with, IMO.

I know they had a very small budget to work with, but it looks like they were spending more than they should have for certain episodes, and the other episodes suffered badly for it.

4. You got to explain this one better to me. All I know is that they unknowingly release their physic powers, which affects the world around them. Inside the village everything is safe, cuz plot. Shun's assignment was to use his powers on the egg right? The egg in turn reflects his subconscious, right? Kaburagi saw the monster that Shun created and reports him. Perhaps he was aware that they made it back to the village the first time, and thought it would have been better to kill them all instead of blocking their memories. That way, this whole event would not have happened.

6. The problem is that they are using being gay as a phase, that most people grow out of. It's mainly there to garner attention from people, serve as eye candy, and as a plot device to show how close both Saki and Satoru were to Shun without having to develop Satoru's and Shun's relationship. We were told Satoru and Shun were best friends, but nothing in the show reinforces that they are best friends. Just rivals for Saki heart. So add former lover to the equation and call it a day.

Why throw out morals that have no context in the show? It looks like the show is saying: "You know, this all could have been avoided if someone thought outside the box."

4. ok so your explanation about the shun/kaburagi confrontation in school makes sense (also just noticed that there was a rainbow flash whenever they had the confrontation, so maybe kaburagi noticed that shun's subconscious release of power was too strong? rewatching I picked up on the part where two cantus users use their power against each other and you see a rainbow flash of light) but I am still wondering about when kaburagi died at the end because they mentioned it again for some reason

I was upset by this, i mean they treated it differently in different parts (saki still loved maria, satoru wanted to remember shuns identity so he could remember why he fell in love with him, both when they are 26) I don't think they treated it right but I am still glad that they had it, as opposed to them avoiding it out of fear. regardless that was the only relationship that i thought was sincere, and that i related to

the sign was put there precisely for that reason, to say that imagination, thinking outside the box, non-conformity could have prevented this. all i was saying was that you would never find that sign on a wall in the ssy universe, that it wasn't related directly to the events of the show. the author was underlining the power of critical fiction, saying that this is what happens when you compromise yourself and your morals out of fear, etc. the author was trying to bring the morals of the show to the forefront of your mind, leaving you with something to think about.

4. The limiters did keep people sane.
6. The whole romance aspect confuses me. Mamoru gets shafted the entire time until he disappears. Then suddenly Maria just grows fond of him. So fond that she is willing to leave Saki, when before she just treated him like some guy that was just tagging along with the group.

So how does this help modern Japan and how they dealt with the first psychic attack? What could they have done differently, so that this future would have never happened? While thinking outside the box has helped the main cast escape danger, I don't think it should be the moral to presented at the end. It sounds like the author is simply telling Japan that a bleak future awaits it if no one is willing to think for themselves.

So lets start with the "plot hole" regarding Maria/Mamoru's child not dying of shame over what happened to Kiroumaru's army. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the anime I don't think they ever explicitly stated that the 'ogre' was the one to kill the soldiers. Kiroumaru's description goes something like this: "My best forces were wiped out because (not by) of a single child. Our arrows were stopped in midair. Our weapons were taken from us by Power. There was nothing we could do." Its not only entirely possible that she just removed the weapons and allowed the soldiers to finish the job, it is directly stated in the manga by Kiroumaru: "It was incredibly brutal in killing us... Instead of doing it directly with Cantus, it simply stole our weapons and let the robber flies do the dirty work"

 

The anime and manga handle Shun turning into a Karma demon a bit differently. In the manga Shun begins to get sick during the summer field trip (on a side note the children don't split up or have their powers sealed) the leakage in his powers becomes apparent in how it effects the life around him. It is implied Kaburagi first notices Shuns change when he finds centipede eating itself. The change occurs before the first time skip, right after Kiroumaru's army wipes out the Ground Spider's forces and as far as I can tell it is strongly implied that Shun died as a result. Normally the barrier would be used as a tool to prevent any real power leakage within its bounds but Karma Demons leakage cannot be stopped. So far as I can tell, all events regarding Shun's transformation are initially removed from Sakis memory.

 

As for why Kubarogi died due to power leakage in the anime? I can't tell you. He would not have won either way, but I dont fully understand the death scene myself. In the manga, power leakage is not mentioned in relation to his death, it was just a matter of time before the 'ogre' won, being able to fully utilize her powers against him well he had the mental limitations that prevents him from dealing a killing blow (cant remember if this is the same in the anime, but the death of shame also prevented them from willingly killing someone of the same race in the manga)

 

Another thing the manga changes is how Mamoru and Maria leave the village, although it ultimately plays out in a similar fashion. In the manga the village decides to eliminate Maria, despite her showing no personality issues, because they are just dicks like that and for some reason they decide to release like 10 faze cats to do it. It ends up being Mamoru who saves her (how he manages to take on all the cats and survive is beyond me) and runs away with her (in the anime it was the other way around). Mamoru had a similar personality in the manga but he did not come off nearly as wimpy as in the anime.

 

I'm also fairly certain the Saki remained the head of the ethics committee, but I cant back that up with anything solid.

 

Now as for the pacing, I felt the ending did an incredible job of making the entire story feel worth it, but getting to that point could be torture since It was not until the last bit that you really start to understand the extent of what the monster rats are, which are focused on the entire story. Don't get me wrong, I think the pacing of the story ends up being one of its strengths; if you get to the end, but to someone who is watching it that first arc in particular can be a hard grind and off-putting.

@Demx, regarding your question about the power of imagination, and also what could/should have been done.

I would attribute the powers of imagination more to Saki's willpower to seek out and accept harsh realities, and attempt to create a better future, rather then how creative she was. I think the story intentionally made her that way, to show less emphasis on how being more powerful can change the world, and more on how we act in relation to the world can effect it. My example for this would be Saki saving the Monster rat at the start of the summer vacation, she ended up receiving guidance from Shun in how to use her powers (obviously he could have just done it himself) but she was the one who acted to save it. Saki always had drive, and goals, she hardly just bumbled around.

 

The thing is Saki and others made a lot of decisions that seemed moral at the time, but objectively looking back caused more damage then good, and Saki who is narrating the story from a future point in time acknowledges this constantly both in her own actions and in the decision made by the society around them.The story(Saki) states early on that had Maria not been born, many lives could have been spared, yet objectively what could have been done to prevent this at the time based on what they knew? Not much. That's why the setting is so damn scary and why the society is driven on fear. Every person holds the possibility to wipe them out, and the correct answers can only really be given by those who look back on the events based on how it played out. But the same thing is true in real life too, our perspectives around any given situation is limited. We can look back and decide whether or not something was right or wrong based on what happened, but without knowing how a different decision would have played out can we ever really know if that would have been any better or worse? No we can only speculate. Instead, what is important in the story, and why I liked Saki as the main character was moral drive. Did she ever manage to grow to be someone who would make the world a better place? That's left to our imagination as to what happens in the future, this is intentionally left open, just like most the other moral questions in the show (who was really the villains in the end?).

 

 

So just some other random thoughts, opinions, and such:

-Saki and Satoru were my favorite couple. Maria was shown to be more of a passionate fling then true love (granted they obviously cared about each other) and Shun met his demise before his and Saki's relationship could really go anywhere. Satoru and her were close to begin with, but they underwent the most development with each other out of all the couples. I like that their relationship is one that was actually built over a long period of time, it felt more realistic and genuine to me.

 

-Saki was my also my favorite character, with Yakomaru as a close 2nd.

 

-I get that Saki is the main character, so it would make sense that her relationships would receive more focus then the others, but I think the anime should have focused more on Shun and Sotarus relationship before Shun turned into a Karma demon, since it is portrayed as being an important part of Satorus character development.

 

On the other hand the manga has had no yaoi, and tons more yuri. So far, the manga has had about 3-4 full on sex scenes (all yuri) involving underage characters. So obviously the anime is a pretty big step up in terms of double standards for this and is more toned down for the sex (Don't think we saw anything other then kissing in the anime).

 

-As well as underage hentai, the manga also shows quite a few death scenes that are much more graphic then in the anime (pretty much at Gantz level if you've ever read the manga for that)

 

-The anime had a pretty toned down art style and feel to it in comparison to the manga, in which characters are much more over the top and quirky. As a result I felt the anime was easier take seriously and look at realistically, but less entertaining from one scene to a next when compared with the manga.

 

-The animation was 50/50 for me. I did like the simplistic style and aesthetic a lot, but at times it looked incredibly awkward and cheap, like in the kissing scenes. There were also times I was amazed by how stylish it could be, like in both ending credits and episode 10.

 

-Reiko and Shun are ghosts in the manga. They watch the events that happen to Saki and comment on whats happening in bonus chapters after their deaths (its incredibly cheesy and out of place, but lol neways)

 

-OST was good, but it seemed like they reused the same tracks a bit too frequently.

 

-The manga is not finished yet, its starting the final arc though.

 

-I too would like to read the novel and see how it differs from the manga/anime... Maybe one day.

 

 

Hmm theres a lot more I could say, in particular about the themes, social implications and philosophies presented in the show, but thats good enough for now...  Sorry a lot of this is just my disorganized thoughts, but theres a lot of conversation that could be covered here so try and bear with me

I prefer the shorter ones (as my many, many rants involving Bleach has probably shown you by now) as the writers are forced to make it more memorable, and if its not that great... well, at least you didn't waste too long with it.

 

Plus I like being able to binge an entire series in 1-2 days.
