Yeah that show is great in a hilariously awkward sort of way. I had to pause during moments of it because it was just too damn much.

 

I swear episode 11 has one of the most adorable scenes in anime...

I was sold on it after getting throught the introduction and opening theme in the first episode.  I was like "Oh!  They nailed it!"  Established the character, and the theme totally reaffirmed her quarky/crazy inner personality.

 

So far it been a hilarious ride.

So lets start with the "plot hole" regarding Maria/Mamoru's child not dying of shame over what happened to Kiroumaru's army. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the anime I don't think they ever explicitly stated that the 'ogre' was the one to kill the soldiers. Kiroumaru's description goes something like this: "My best forces were wiped out because (not by) of a single child. Our arrows were stopped in midair. Our weapons were taken from us by Power. There was nothing we could do." Its not only entirely possible that she just removed the weapons and allowed the soldiers to finish the job, it is directly stated in the manga by Kiroumaru: "It was incredibly brutal in killing us... Instead of doing it directly with Cantus, it simply stole our weapons and let the robber flies do the dirty work"

 

The anime and manga handle Shun turning into a Karma demon a bit differently. In the manga Shun begins to get sick during the summer field trip (on a side note the children don't split up or have their powers sealed) the leakage in his powers becomes apparent in how it effects the life around him. It is implied Kaburagi first notices Shuns change when he finds centipede eating itself. The change occurs before the first time skip, right after Kiroumaru's army wipes out the Ground Spider's forces and as far as I can tell it is strongly implied that Shun died as a result. Normally the barrier would be used as a tool to prevent any real power leakage within its bounds but Karma Demons leakage cannot be stopped. So far as I can tell, all events regarding Shun's transformation are initially removed from Sakis memory.

 

As for why Kubarogi died due to power leakage in the anime? I can't tell you. He would not have won either way, but I dont fully understand the death scene myself. In the manga, power leakage is not mentioned in relation to his death, it was just a matter of time before the 'ogre' won, being able to fully utilize her powers against him well he had the mental limitations that prevents him from dealing a killing blow (cant remember if this is the same in the anime, but the death of shame also prevented them from willingly killing someone of the same race in the manga)

 

Another thing the manga changes is how Mamoru and Maria leave the village, although it ultimately plays out in a similar fashion. In the manga the village decides to eliminate Maria, despite her showing no personality issues, because they are just dicks like that and for some reason they decide to release like 10 faze cats to do it. It ends up being Mamoru who saves her (how he manages to take on all the cats and survive is beyond me) and runs away with her (in the anime it was the other way around). Mamoru had a similar personality in the manga but he did not come off nearly as wimpy as in the anime.

 

I'm also fairly certain the Saki remained the head of the ethics committee, but I cant back that up with anything solid.

 

Now as for the pacing, I felt the ending did an incredible job of making the entire story feel worth it, but getting to that point could be torture since It was not until the last bit that you really start to understand the extent of what the monster rats are, which are focused on the entire story. Don't get me wrong, I think the pacing of the story ends up being one of its strengths; if you get to the end, but to someone who is watching it that first arc in particular can be a hard grind and off-putting.

@Demx, regarding your question about the power of imagination, and also what could/should have been done.

I would attribute the powers of imagination more to Saki's willpower to seek out and accept harsh realities, and attempt to create a better future, rather then how creative she was. I think the story intentionally made her that way, to show less emphasis on how being more powerful can change the world, and more on how we act in relation to the world can effect it. My example for this would be Saki saving the Monster rat at the start of the summer vacation, she ended up receiving guidance from Shun in how to use her powers (obviously he could have just done it himself) but she was the one who acted to save it. Saki always had drive, and goals, she hardly just bumbled around.

 

The thing is Saki made a lot of decisions that seemed moral at the time, but objectively looking back was not, and Saki who is narrating the story from a future point in time acknowledges this constantly. The story(Saki) states early on that had Maria not been born, many lives could have been spared, yet objectively what could have been done to prevent this at the time based on what they knew? Not much. That's why the setting is so damn scary and why the society is driven on fear. Every person holds the possibility to wipe them out, and the correct answers can only really be given by those who look back on the events based on how it played out. But the same thing is true in real life too, our perspectives around any given situation is limited. We can look back and decide whether or not something was right or wrong based on what happened, but without knowing how a different decision would have played out can we ever really know if that would have been any better or worse? No we can only speculate. Instead, what is important in the story, and why I liked Saki as the main character was moral drive. Did she ever manage to grow to be someone who would make the world a better place? That's left to our imagination as to what happens in the future, this is intentionally left open, just like most the other moral questions in the show (who was really the villains in the end?).

 

 

So just some other random thoughts, opinions, and such:

-Saki and Satoru were my favorite couple. Maria was shown to be more of a passionate fling then true love (granted they obviously cared about each other) and Shun met his demise before his and Saki's relationship could really go anywhere. Satoru and her were close to begin with, but they underwent the most development with each other out of all the couples. I like that their relationship is one that was actually built over a long period of time, it felt more realistic and genuine to me.

 

-Saki was my also my favorite character, with Yakomaru as a close 2nd.

 

-I get that Saki is the main character, so it would make sense that her relationships would receive more focus then the others, but I think the anime should have focused more on Shun and Sotarus relationship before Shun turned into a Karma demon, since it is portrayed as being an important part of Satorus character development.

 

On the other hand the manga has had no yaoi, and tons more yuri. So far, the manga has had about 3-4 full on sex scenes (all yuri) involving underage characters. So obviously the anime is a pretty big step up in terms of double standards for this and is more toned down for the sex (Don't think we saw anything other then kissing in the anime).

 

-As well as underage hentai, the manga also shows quite a few death scenes that are much more graphic then in the anime (pretty much at Gantz level if you've ever read the manga for that)

 

-The anime had a pretty toned down art style and feel to it in comparison to the manga, in which characters are much more over the top and quirky. As a result I felt the anime was easier take seriously and look at realistically, but less entertaining from one scene to a next when compared with the manga.

 

-The animation was 50/50 for me. I did like the simplistic style and aesthetic a lot, but at times it looked incredibly awkward and cheap, like in the kissing scenes. There were also times I was amazed by how stylish it could be, like in both ending credits and episode 10.

 

-Reiko and Shun are ghosts in the manga. They watch the events that happen to Saki and comment on whats happening in bonus chapters after their deaths (its incredibly cheesy and out of place, but lol neways)

 

-OST was good, but it seemed like they reused the same tracks a bit too frequently.

 

-The manga is not finished yet, its starting the final arc though.

 

-I too would like to read the novel and see how it differs from the manga/anime... Maybe one day.

 

 

Hmm theres a lot more I could say, in particular about the themes, social implications and philosophies presented in the show, but thats good enough for now...  Sorry a lot of this is just my disorganized thoughts, but theres a lot of conversation that could be covered here so try and bear with me

1. ok this this makes a lot more sense, in the anime i recall the part about their weapons being taken away, but i also recall someone saying that the corpses had been burned so bad they were unrecognizable, so i thought it was the ogre/fiend. but i am more than willing to accept your story since my viewing was a little rushed and it was stated in the manga directly

 

2. they don't have their power sealed?! that is so crazy, because i hate those scenes, i always feel like the priests are ripping their souls out (one of the reasons i dont like the priests). so this is all from the manga right? because i'm not remembering some of the stuff you mentioned there (strongly implied shun died as result of?)

and in the anime, doesnt saki blame herself because she thought she restored shun's power incorrectly? i always wondered if this appeared in any of the other sources, and whether or not it was treated as credible.

 

detail, in the anime ep4 maybe? i just rewatched it and i picked up on something. the minoshiro was telling saki about the death reflex and how someone has to be conditioned to make it more effective. saki then had a flashback to when she was younger and the priest stabbed himself in the leg (i think) saying 'you're hurting me! you realize you're hurting me?' and saki literally falls onto the floor in a seizure, makes me so mad

 

3. i agree he wouldn't have won. of course he could have just killed her and sacrificed himself, because im pretty sure that the death of shame applies after the fact (in the anime at least) this happens when maria's daughter dies after she finds out kiroumaru's identity. and even if someone did know the identity of the person before they killed them, wouldnt they still be able to do it? since the death of shame mechanism is pretty much turning your blood toxic so you die of cardiac arrest, it would take a while (at least a couple seconds) and would prevent people from premeditated murder, but not much else right?

but kaburagi didnt do that and it makes for a better story. i also thought most of his scenes were well done. made you feel like you were actually watching a master, even if he did act like a jerk

 

4. i wonder which way it was in the novel? taking out mamoru makes a certain kind of sense in the anime (tomiko says taking out the weak link is necessary), but it doesnt really make sense to take out maria

 

5. thats what i was thinking, i just wanted to know since the world would be a better place if she was, provided tomiko didnt brainwash her too much

 

6. i actually didnt think first arc was too bad, i never got bored or anything. besides a lot of the time was used for world/character building, and i prefer that over action anyway. i didnt think that the monster rats were really a main focus (in the beginning at least). they were present throughout and played a pretty big role, but it wasnt until the end that they became a crucial part of the story

 

another detail: so during ep4 the monk rijin kills a whole bunch of monster rats using his cantus to create a tornado. during this sequence saki looks into the tornado and sees this feminine (human) figure riding a scythe (i think). this is obviously supposed to mean something and i have my own ideas about it, but i wanted to get your opinion first.

 

7. i like your response to demx, well thought out and very deep...

not much could have been done admittedly, but i think that is the most important part. you cant condemn someone who's not guilty. they didn't know that maria was going to bear a child that would become a killer, just like they didn't know if the thousands of children they killed were really going to become killers. if you try to make the best moral decisions based on the info you have at the time, then thats great, but to conversely let fear drive your decisions is always a bad thing imo

and hindsight is 20/20, but i find the excuse "you don't know what it was like at the time" terrifying quite frankly. it means you can pretty much justify anything you do now by stating in the future that looking at a situation objectively wasnt possible at the time due to emotional constraints, which is completely subjective. 

i really like your point of view on how saki might have grown as a moral person. given the influences that she had in her life, and the things that happened to her i think that was really an open-ended question. not something i like to speculate on because towards the end she was pretty much tomiko's right hand person, but it also seemed like she stayed true to herself in some parts... still up in the air though

 

8. really? i didnt think that saki and satoru had nearly enough development in the anime. they did have a lot of screen time together, but none where the sole purpose was to build chemistry, as opposed to the scenes with shun/maria. i know their relationship was treated much differently in the novel vs. the anime, so maybe they also had more development in the manga? i was fine with them getting married because they were the only ones left, so there wasnt any other way to go really. and i liked the mature satoru better, he seemed more grounded and thought out. 

this is all pretty much how you relate to each character personally though, so i guess we will just have to agree to disagree 

 

9. you really liked yakomaru that much? i mean he was a terrific villain (*edit: though as you pointed out villain isn't really well defined in this show), and i hated him so that means he was a 'good' character, but still.. *shudders*

 

10. agreed. satoru even says towards the end of the anime that he wants to remember shun's identity so that he could remember who he fell in love with, which also made me think that the relationship should have been dealt with better. as is the emotional impact of that situation was limited because of the lack of development

 

11. i read that the manga was bad that way, i am fine with some here and there but sometimes stuff like that gets old quick. and double standards are never cool

 

12. yeah i think if they would have done the 'over the top' characters in the anime it would have detracted from the atmosphere/tone they were trying to achieve. pretty much what you said about making the show easier to take seriously

 

13. i suppose the animation was a little simplistic, but i still liked it. some character designs would change change drastically for a frame or two whenever they were trying to do close ups. i dont remember this happening with any particular kissing scene, but kissing is a closeup so imagine it did happen and i just didnt notice it. and both of the EC and ep10 were good. i think those parts gave the animators a little more freedom of expression so they could be visually awesome. in other parts of the show they would have had to keep things 'realistic' whereas in those 3 parts the setting was more 'dreamlike'

 

14. definitely liked the ost, you could always tell when something was going to happen because some awesome piece of music would come up. this never really got old for me, but it could have been a little repetitive if you like variety.

 

@demx, I really think that it should be taken in the context of the show, and then taken out of the context of the show (a combination of both my previous statements). I wasn't really saying that I could come up with a way to use imagination to change ssy after the fact, I was trying to say pretty much what you said in your last post: if people don't think for themselves then they are doomed to a bleak future. use your imagination to analyze the show and apply the moral lessons to your life so that something like that never occurs

 

@isichar: so i started puella magi madoka magica tonight, its a little different than all the other animes I have watched, but seems interesting. im not really sure what the plot is at this point but im not that far in so I will be patient. anything I should know before I get too far in?

and any other suggested animes you might have would be nice too, since we seem to have similar taste

Balalaika is the greatest character in that show tbh. Maybe the greatest character in any anime.

Well, since god knows how long my SSY post is going to turn out this time I'll just drop a quick note about Puella Magi Madoka Magica separately first.

 

The less you know the better. Its sort of designed to screw with your expectations of whats going to happen. The beginning sets things up to be a pretty typical magical girl anime, but its not. A saying comes to mind with PMMM: The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

 

 

 

 

As for some other animes that I think are smart or provide some interesting social commentary that I enjoyed:

 

Ghost in a shell

Akira (movie is decent but manga is where the juicy content is)

Neon Genesis Evangelion

 

Not even going to explain those 3, they have been around for ages. They are good timeless classics that will keep you thinking long after you've finished them.

 

Welcome to the NHK - More of a comedy then anything. This series centers around a "hikikomori" which is a japanese term to describe people that don't leave there homes and apartments. One day a girl shows up at his house shortly with her aunt to discuss the growing problem of hikikomori and even after she leaves he finds he cannot get her out of his mind. He leaves his house shortly after but becomes nervous and runs home after bumping into the girl who came to his house. Shortly after that he receives a letter in his house from the girl explaining that she can cure his hikikomori state if he enters in a contract with her...  Theres definitely some strong social commentary since most of it deals with how the main character, Sato communicates with others. Its kind of like a comedic rehabilitation for introverts, as well as a look at how everyone in society has problems and how we all deal with it in our own way. Its somewhat anti-climactic but in a way thats sort of fitting for a series like this. Only 1 season long.

 

Death Note - The main character is an intelligent student who one day finds a notebook, in which anyone who's name he writes in it will die. He becomes absolutely corrupt with power and convinces himself that he is a God and begins killing those he thinks are unworthy in order to create his perfect world. Its a story about power corrupting and 2 intelligent minds clashing in a battle of wits. Its 2 seasons... First season is amazing, 2nd season is pretty meh though.

 

The Meloncholy of Sazumi Haruhi - What if a schoolgirl was God, but she did not realize it? The concept is pretty ridiculous and yet the story takes it seriously enough that its pretty interesting. The main character has the ability to completely alter reality around her but she does not realize it, her friends do and attempt to keep her from finding out as well as prevent her from doing anything too destructive by accident. Theres actually quite a few scientific concepts presented throughout this show and for the most part they are all pretty good and solid. Plus its funny. Its 2 seasons long and a movie (although the 2nd season has an 8 episode arc I think most people skip...)

 

Clannad - A bit different then most the other ones on this list but still a freaking amazing watch, in particular if you like a good romance. This series is 2 seasons, the first season and first half of the second season deal with a delinquent boy going through Highschool, and his relationship with a girl he meets there. The last half of the 2nd season deals with his life after school as he finds a job and tries to build a family. Even though I personally like the first 3/4 of the series, its the last 1/4 that really makes this worth watching so its a bit of a slow burner in a different way then SSY was. King of the feels, if this anime does not make you cry at least once by the end, then your a heartless monster (j/k j/k). As someone here once said: Come for the laughs, stay for the feels.

 

Serial Experiments Lain - Honestly I can't remember tons about this one, not enough to describe it well, but I remember it being a good sci-fi watch at the time. Its one that is confusing as hell to begin with, but does a good job of explain itself by the end. Its only 13 episodes long as its great if your looking for something shorter.

 

Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood- 2 seperate versions of the same story. Brotherhood is the more preferred but both are good. Both deal with 2 boys in a fantasy world that attempt to use alchemy to revive their dead mother, it fails and they pay a heavy price. The series follows the 2 boys as they attempt to recover what they lost by attempting that taboo. Brotherhood is constantly put on top 10 lists, frequently in first place so this is a pretty easy recommendation. The original FMA series is 2 seasons plus a movie from what I remember. The Brotherhood series is about 64 episodes and I'm not sure offhand if theres any continuations afterwords.

Never seen Marley and Me, maybe I'll check it out. I can't help but think of the "Jurassic Bark" episode of Futurama with Fry and his dog Seymour, the ending scene always has me fighting back my feels

thanks for the recommendations! all of them sound pretty good (especially clannad and deathnote), though I will probably end up watching the short ones first since I am in the middle of the semester and don't want to get too involved lest I willfully forget about my exams

 

sadly I was so confused I decided to read a little about pmmm (before I saw your post), and I can see how your saying could be applied there. I had the feeling from the beginning that someone was going to get screwed, now im pretty sure of what is going to happen...

 

and about the above, different versions of the same story? which should be watched first?
