Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei's earned a lot of my laughs for how over-the-top ridiculous it is and tickling my dark humor bone. As much as I love all the other comedies I've watched, so few tickle that dark humor and the last thing I've watched which tickled it was Another and I'm 90% certain that was unintentional.

Primer's actually been on my to watch list for years now! I just keep dragging my feet on sitting down and actually watching it. Why yes, that is a regular occurrence for me. Regarding Steins;Gate, it's another case where like the When They Cry series, I've been pondering reading the VN that goes with it first and then eventually checking out the series.

 

Watched episode 4 of KlK last night before going to bed. I laughed way too much over it. I've done a little bit of reading about the team behind it and now it just makes so much sense that the staff behind FLCL worked on it. I personally haven't watched Gurren Lagann though I've heard so much about it over the years. I don't know why, but the back of my mind just keeps telling me that the insane humor and stuff is going to pave the way for later when things eventually get real.

 

Also three weeks until Rebellion Story's blu-ray comes out! Even if I'm somehow not caught up on KlK by then, I'm planning on going through the series again the weekend before just so everything is fresh in my mind.

 

Also, Texhnolyze is a great series. It's a bit of a slow burner but I really enjoyed it myself. The music is fantastic!

SZS--so far--has me dying of laughter at-least once every episode, there's far too many times where I feel needless fanservice hurts a show but in this case, it just makes it infinitely better because it's all done tongue-in-cheek.

 

Was aware of Maria+Holic but it doesn't scratch any particular itch I've been having for a while, SZS is doing the dark humor itch perfectly and I think it'll be a while before I'll be watching another comedy. I'll look into Tatami Galaxy and Katanagatari and keep them in mind for future watches, though.

 

Going to watch episode 17 of Steins;Gate and then go to bed. Things just keep getting crazier by the episode, and I'm loving it. It really reminds me of Madoka Magica in some aspects.

I've got some complaints about the later parts of Steins;Gate which I'll spoiler below for when you're done.

As much as people complain about the series starting "slow", I felt everything was perfect until the visual novel roots of the story made it's ugly appearance. The dating episode(s) were terrible and broke the pace, they didn't keep up with the crash-course drama of Mayuri's death and I felt Okabe's desperation was explored really well until we reached those moments.

Not that it completely ruined the show forever, I love everything after that specific moment as well and there's still enough drama within them with Okabe feeling remorse about having to "fix" things but, well... like I've said, it showed it's visual novel roots and I would've preferred a lot of other ways of handling it.

 

 

 

Also, Texhnolyze is a great series. It's a bit of a slow burner but I really enjoyed it myself. The music is fantastic!

I've always loved the opening but I didn't watch the series yet, I probably should due to all the comparisons to Lain. It's just hard to be in the right... "mood" for something like it, however.

Kafuka's seating position always changes, she had a bandage on her arm which was never addressed during one scene and she disappeared after everyone "cleansed themselves" of their "toxins" and reappeared after they ate junk food but the OCD girl was missing. Something is definitely up, body swapping / possession?

1. It could have been stated much more clearly in the anime. Its more of an oversight then anything else. It could be they did not want to give away any hints early on as to the real nature behind the 'ogre' but it does seem to be a common point of misunderstanding in the series for people.

 

2. Yeah, the anime adds a lot to the summer vacation arc as well as changing a few details, some of which are rather interesting.

 

 -  In the anime the kids run into a False Minoshiro, question it, the monk shows up, kills the False Minoshiro and then seals there powers. The monk is soon killed, the kids are split up and the story follows Saki and Satoru as they are saved by Squera, who with Sotaru's powers defeats a large portion of the Ground Spider forces before Kiroumaru shows up to finish it and the kids are reunited. The time skip occurs and then the events following Shuns descent into a Karmic Demon occur.

 

Tbh I never fully understood the whole thing with sealing and unsealing the powers in the anime, and I was not entirely sure how seriously to take Saki's speculation that she caused it by restoring the powers incorrectly. I would be interested to see how the novel handled this since the anime and manga are quite different, but I got the impression that it was something that was dormant (albeit it rare) in everyone. This is one point I will have to eventually go back and watch for to see if it is actually described properly.

 

 - In the manga the kids end up running into the Ground Spiders forces, are forced to run and are saved by Squera, help defend against the initial attack on the caves, and then are saved when Kiroumaru shows up to finish the ground spiders. Its during this arc that Shun begins to grow sick and ends with him transforming following the events with Kiroumaru. As Shun is transforming Saki finds him and he explains to her what is happening and that she must live on. Despite his last request Saki refuses to leave Shuns side and he uses his powers to fly them above earth and into space to share one last moment, but explains the backlash of using his powers like that would end up consuming him. Before he dies he tell Saki to find the False Minoshiro and to create a world in which people do not have to suffer the same fate that himself and Reiko did. She expresses that she does not have the strength to do it and his final words are "You can do anything, Saki" (this was a pretty epic moment in the manga to be honest).

 

A few days pass following these events, Saki and her friends have their memories altered but Saki ends up remembering everything almost immediately after, at which point she takes her friends and they find the False Minoshiro that answers there questions, only this time Mamoru gets nervous listening to it (since it was discussing things considered taboo by the village) and uses his powers to blow it away (Ironically becoming the one that Yakomaru captures and uses as his source of information).

 

 

3. I often wondered this myself. Objectively the 'ogre' was no more powerful then anyone else (ultimately it was just an average Cantus user), Shishei was actually stronger and it became clear that he was willing to sacrifice his life (particularly so in the manga) so why could he not just kamakaze?

 

A line in the manga suggests that the death of shame does not only kill the user who hurts someone of the same race, but also actively prevents you from willingly harming them: Shishei launches a ton of missiles at the 'ogre' who is unable to react in time to stop them, the arrows stop themselves right before making contact, to which Satoru comments "I knew it... nobody can overcome the attack suppression gene.." saki adds "Humans can't attack fiends..."

 

This is pretty consistent with what we see in the anime too. Since we never see a human willingly harm someone who they perceive to be of the same race. Probably just another oversight on the animes part.

 

On a side note it does sort of make sense when you think about why 'ogres' are so powerful and feared, they are really the only ones who can go all out without worrying. A regular cantus user has practically no way of killing an 'Ogre' regardless of how willing they are to sacrifice themselves.

 

4. I will get back to you if I ever end up checking out a translation of the novel, but honestly neither Maria nor Mamoru were particular threats to the village until they left. In the anime Tomiko states it was a brash decision to attempt to take out Mamoru and in the manga it seems like Maria was only targeted because she got dragged alongside Saki on her escapades. Regardless of who it happened to and why it was an irrational decision based on fear by the village and ironically is the spark of events that lead to everything they feared occurring.

 

5. I don't think there was much brainwashing done outside altering memories. Tomiko wanted Saki to become the next leader for a reason, and I didn't get the impression it was because Saki could be controlled, if anything the opposite is probably true. If anyone could make their society better, it would be Saki.

 

Saki's decision to grant Squealer peace is, as I see it, exactly why she was chosen by Tomiko to be a leader. Tomiko understood that the world was a cruel place, and needed someone who could see that, but still strive to make a better future. I like to think that regardless of the fear and ignorance shown by the villagers, that they did essentially trust Tamiko's judgement and trust in Saki by the end.

 

At the very least in the anime we are shown scenes afterwords that suggest that no serious punishment (like death or imprisonment) was taken against her.

 

6. A. There was one guy on this forums a few pages back that said he quit because he couldn't stand it. My buddy who I re-watched the series with couldn't stand the monster rats until the end either. For the most part I was willing to go with it, I found it to be a pleasant change in pacing compared to what I was use to, and the setting intrigued me well enough. Its good it didn't bother you, there's plenty of slow burners out there that are well told stories.

 

I will say this much, I don't think its a series you can fully appreciate until you've made it to the very end. The rest of the series would have been a good watch but the final episode is what makes the series leave such a strong impression on me in more ways then one. So I'd still call it a slow burner in that sense.

 

B. It could be the powers of imagination taken more literally, meaning it was an image Rijin had imagined. It would not be the first time that someones subconscious manifested itself in the users powers(possibly from power leakage?), like right before Kofu dies he talks about the art within him dying and shoots out a light with a woman's figure behind it.

 

7. I think she changed throughout the story, but in a good way. Near the beginning of the series Saki uses her powers to save a monster rat from drowning in a lake, even though that went against the towns rules. Afterwords is when she gets her first good look at a monster rat up close she reacts in disgust at its appearance, and tries to leave before it can even thank her. I like how we get to see her moral side to rescue another life, followed by an ignorant reaction at seeing something so different from herself. The story does a lot to screw with that initial impression as she grows up. There's tons of other moments I could mention, but the two most obvious examples would be Maria and Mamoru's child getting raised to believe she is a monster rat instead of a human, and the final twist revealing the monster rats really came from humans.

 

I liked Saki so much because she actually questions what it means to be moral, and by the end admits that she no longer even knows whats right and wrong. Yet she still strives to make the right decision to make a better future despite acknowledging that she has no real way of knowing what that is. Saki was always naturally someone who will attempt to be moral, but it took her a while to fully grasp what being moral means. I find her final scene with Squealer as she grants him peace proof of what a strong person she ended up becoming.

 

That's how I like to see it at least.

 

8. In the manga they receive less development. Satoru and Saki did have the least romantic chemistry but I still felt they developed the most together, mainly since hes the only one she really got to grow up with. I did think Saki/Maria made a cute couple and I wish that had not ended so tragically, but even when she was with Maria she mostly just pined for Shun. Shun understood Saki and connected with her emotionally more then anyone but their relationship is not given time to develop past that initial spark.

9. Yeah, I thought he was just such a great antagonist that the she would have not been the same without him. When you first meet him, you think almost nothing of him... there was so much else in the settings lore that I was interested in seeing. Hes one of the weakest intelligent life forms in a world of people who have evolved powers, and yet with a bit of luck and a ton of cunning he manages to put the strongest most dominant race at serious risk of getting wiped out. How does he do that? By taking a human, convincing her that shes a monster rat, thus allowing her to kill other humans freely, as they cannot fight her. And what is hilarious about it all is that monster rats are actually human! Perception is such a fickle thing and that magnificent bastard messed with it until the very end.

 

I think he understood the world better then almost everyone in the setting. He knew where he and his race stood in life, and how they were viewed and chose to better their position when given the chance, I can't exactly blame him, although there's no getting around that he had to pay the consequences for failure. The final episode with him going back to his original name and proclaiming he was human, as he stood naked in front of a human court as they laughed at him was an interesting scene. You get to see him come full circle and bitterly accept his 'tragic' fate knowing how close he had came to succeeding.

 

He played a major role in how Saki developed, screwed with a world of people that looked down on him as a lesser life form, screwed with my initial perception of the monster rats being a lame and typical enemy and ended up being one of the most cunning characters in the story. I just have to give him props for being way more awesome then he had any rights to be.

 

10. This is another thing I would like to see the source material for, since the manga and anime handle this so differently. In the manga there was no indication that the two had a relationship, especially since Shun becomes a Karmic Demon much earlier in his life.

 

11. The manga is sure to draw in people because: loli yuri sex, but it doesn't add anything to the story, and well I don't mind sex in stories, it's clearly done for the sake of fanservice in this case.

 

12. From a literary point of view I felt the anime is better, but I'm glad I've gone through both tbh. There are moments that I preferred the manga over the anime, like how the manga actually explains how Squealer got a False Minoshiro. I also felt characters that were in the story shorter, like Reiko, are more memorable in the manga then the anime because of the over the top characterizations.

 

13. Overall, the animation and OST did a good job in setting the tone for the show. I just remember the kissing scene just looked like someone had formed play-doh lips and were slamming them against each other

 

Yeah, I definitely thought the dreamlike moments was when the art style really excelled. I love the surreal kind of art styles (as you will probably notice well watching Madoka).

 

14. Maybe I'm just too use to animes that have different unique tracks for each character. I did think it fit the shows style quite well, and I would get the OST, so overall I would say it was good.

 

Themes and social implications...

As I see it Shin Sekai Yori is a people versus society story, that deals with how society and the people in it handled fear, relationships, discrimination, knowledge and morality. There's also an underlying question behind the series: what does it means to be human? The story very strongly challenges us to understand perspectives that differ from our own and question the value we place on our own opinions and lives versus others.

 

Fear the children - Children are portrayed as the biggest threat to the village, because what its possible for them to turn into. When you value the life of 1 child versus that of the society, the society will win. Its scary when you think of how many children's lives are discarded just to protect their own lives. I also can't help but wonder how a society could ever grow to be better when its so terrified of any form of future it does not understand. Although Tomiko had knowledge from her age, she also was driven by fear. I think she understood that the village needed someone like Saki if it had any chance of creating a better future.

 

Knowledge is power - Just by obtaining knowledge and understanding the situation Squealer was able to push humanity to the brink of extinction. Early Cantus users also manipulated later societies knowledge of the monster rats in order to make it so they could be controlled without Cantus users having to worry about the restrictions they had due to the death of shame. The children constantly had their memories altered in order to make them more accepting of the village. In the end the 'ogre' was defeated simply by making it believe it had killed a monster rat. How our perception changes based on our knowledge of a situation, and how big of a difference that knowledge can make is pretty scary. Knowledge was more dangerous then Cantus was.

 

So, what does it mean to be human in the context of the series? Does it come down to looks? how we are raised? How many chromosomes you have? Its another open ended question, like morality I think it comes down to your perspective of the situation. 

 

Those are a few of the ones that stood out to me.

2. yeah I never really understood how they sealed the powers of the kids. I think hypnosis is so powerful (since they have been in a controlled society all their lives, pretty much indoctrinated) that the priests are able to subconsciously control the power of the children by setting mental barriers. (*edit: meaning that I think they never actually lose their cantus, its just dormant which I think you said?)

 

and the first thing I thought whenever she started to restore the others cantus was "no, she is going to screw them up!"

 

wow, I had no idea that the manga handled shun's death that way. it is so much later in the anime, and while I enjoyed the scene that they had in the anime, the one you described sounds just as enjoyable. the fact that shun shows faith in saki, that saki would feel an obligation to be true to shun in a ideological way, and the fact the she remembers all this immediately after she returns, makes me feel a lot better. it just makes me feel like she is given more of a moral purpose, where before she was oblivious for literally years

 

3. I remember the minoshiro saying something about a wolf gene? I think that is the attack suppression gene that was mentioned, it didn't really talk about it much so I forgot it pretty quick, but that does make sense. I also find it very interesting that the world view of the person can completely change or overcome the biological/social boundaries placed on that person... albeit in a rather gruesome way in this case. (I find it interesting in the context of the show, and make it part of my reality in every day life )

 

I also find that interesting, pretty much a mechanism that was created by the society that has the potential to destroy the society...

 

4.yeah, not a good decision by the school no matter what way you look it.

 

5. hmm when I say brainwashing, I mean it in a pretty broad sense. but not only that, I seem to remember that in the anime the 5 kids were singled out to not have something done to them. im not entirely sure what it was, but I think it was something to do with personality control or something like that

 

6. maybe I am just used to things that are more toned down and less rushed. I like to take my time with any type of media, and when I feel that a show is being rushed or is rushing you, then I think it detracts from the experience. I think most people would have put it down because it wasn't what they expected. it wasn't quite school drama, wasn't quite violent action, etc but was rather a combination of many different approaches. I liked it, but I supposed it could be off-putting for someone with different expectations (I didn't really go in with any expectations)

 

slow burners with good stories are my thing!

 

7. saki definitely changed, Im not really sure I agree with you on how she changed. I remember her saying that she didn't even know what was right or wrong anymore, but I think that was really a comment on how the counsel dealt with squealer and his reaction to what they said about him. I think that was there to underline the fact that eventually the audience would find out that monster rats really are humans and that squealer really was doing what he thought was best for his people (as you say later).

 

8. I agree that It would have been nice to see the shun/saki relationship dynamic. it seemed from the very beginning that shun/saki would end up together, and I was ok with that, but then he died and it was kind of a 'wtf' moment because I had just assumed that it was going to happen (and I don't think there was enough there to say whether or not I would have liked that relationship, probably so though based on what I saw)

 

9. I did definitely like the last part squealer had when he went back to his original name and claimed to be human. it kind of made you think about 'human' as something that you cant touch or see, but is more of an abstract concept.

I like scenes that have a purpose (demonstrating the relationship between two characters, like the scene between maria/saki before maria disappears), but if it is added just for fanservice and if the fanservice gets to be detrimental to the story im not ok with it. (believe it or not I had a whole paragraph outlining where someone should draw the line between acceptable amounts of fanservice/sexualization, and just being offensive; but i scrapped this because I thought it would be too controversial... that and it largely depends not only on the amount, but how you handle it as well)

one thing I did not see coming was that homura was a time traveler that had repeated madoka's fate over and over again. that was sad and melancholy, and it made the series rewatch worthy for me because now I want to see all the small details that I didn't pick up on the first time around.

 

I hated kyubey with a passion, just the way he treated humanity with disregard and disdain was upsetting and infuriating, i mean using cattle-human relationship as an analogy? i know it works and is pretty accurate in that situation, but i would never put an emotionless species higher on the sapience pyramid than a species capable of compassion.

 

favorite character I would have to say is homura. this because she was so insecure at first and then found a person she could love (interpret that how you will) and wanted to fight for that person. the really important aspect here though is how it consumed her, made it a situation where she tried so hard that she ended up losing madoka. this was a grab your heart and slowly squeeze all the blood out of it type thing. and then in the end she finally got to the point where she respected madoka's decision and she let go of her (in a sense)... then they have to spend eternity apart, or at least until homura dies...

 

question: so at the end after the last credits roll, homura is seen getting ready to fight some wraiths in this desolate place, and she sprouts wings (not like the angels wings she had earlier) that look like the images you would see in a witches barrier. what does that mean? 

 

and pmmm had physics?! I was literally in shock that a magical girl anime would bring up thermodynamics, I could not get over how cool that was!

For PMMM you still need to watch The Rebellion Story. its a movie sequel to the TV series that focuses mainly on Homura. Again, I would strongly suggest viewing it spoiler free, even more then I would the TV series. It just came out in theaters last year, so you may only be able to find a LQ subs until the DVD's are released next month.

 

I'm just finishing it up myself, but I would like to add Steins;Gate to my list of recommendations to you. This anime may be in my top 5 if the ending is as good as the rest.

I was lucky enough to watch the movie in theaters a few months back, I absolutely loved it. I definitely felt it had meaning, although not necessarily the kind you'd expect... I'd like to hear if your thoughts change after the movie

 

I thought it was just as good as the rest of the series (OST didn't wow me as much, but the original PMMM has my favorite OST of all time so thats ok).

Yeah the background is definitely torture for long typing sessions.

 

I was lucky enough to watch the movie in theaters a few months back, I absolutely loved it. I definitely felt it had meaning, although not necessarily the kind you'd expect... I'd like to hear if your thoughts change after the movie

yeah i couldn't remember whos profile pic it was, but as soon as i watched pmmm ep7, i was like "oh! i finally know who that person crying blood was!" is your current pic also of sayaka?

and sayaka is definitely a close second with me, she believed in her values, in life, in the goal of saving as many lives as she could even if it meant her own death. she was dedicated, didn't want to give in to the cycle that perpetuated witches (even though she didn't know it at the time) and she was brave in the face of her own demise... one of the most beautiful moments was in ep8 when she was crying but still trying to hang on...

 

i hope the movie doesn't screw over homura, that would make it even worse

It is. Don't forget, she also had the best theme.

 

 

As for how the movie treats Homura, I guess you will just have to see for yourself It seems to be one of those things you will either LOVE or HATE.

Just going to throw out there that any time I listen to Decretum, I can't help but see the Elsa Maria fight play out in my head. As much as I ramble about Oktavia being my favorite witch and all that, the Elsa Maria fight is where the show finally punched me in the face with feels and Decretum just reminds me of that. I did watch a clip of the movie version and must admit that I'm not too crazy about the changed music and such.

Couldn't wait for CR, I watched a fansub for the new KLK episode.

The entire episode was just awesomeness for the good guys. Almost felt like I was watching a series finale with how much feel-good bonding dialogue they stuck in there. It was pretty great tbh.

 

 

Only 2 more weeks of KLK left. My Thursdays just won't be the same once its over...

Finished Steins;Gate the TV series.

The ending was ok, but I did not think it was amazing. I think the story had way more potential for awesome mindfuckery, but it works. The middle of the series was definitely the best part.

 

I'll check out the movie tomorrow.

I agree, the pacing didn't bother me for the most part but that dating episodes were really out of place.
