Whole of philosophy screws with your mind yet makes sense (with some or rather lots of context). I love it. So I'm typically pretty hyped for mind-screwing anime. It's more of existential leanings though, mixed up with Berkeley and some more continental existential stuff, for example Husserl.

 

In other words I like how pretentious yet thought -and imagination-provoking anime can be. New kinds of ways to see the world are best, they kinda help put anything and everything in perspective.

 

@Zoku Sayonara Sensei. I actually started it but haven't finished. The start of it was greatstuff of course.

 

That reminds me of my backcatalog. Started loads of animes a year ago, didn't finish any. Accel World was one better and fun rendition of a virtual reality theme, might pick that up again.

About to start episode 9 of KlK and I just wanted to pop in and state something completely unrelated to the plot: The episodes involving battles with the Elite Four all have really amazing soundtracks. I mean I paid attention to the rest of the music because that's just something I always do but it really stands out to me.

Episode 7 was also really something amazing. I think I get a ton of amusement out of the fact that before I started it myself, I mostly saw a lot of angsting elsewhere about the fanservice and the like. Now that I'm making my way through the series I kind of just want to counter it with 'Have you sat down and actually watched it? Cause there's a hell of a lot more to it than just fanservice...' I suppose it's easier to just take offense and throw one's hands up, but that's probably a little speech I shouldn't make.

KLK has a freaking amazing OST. So good...

 

As for the fanservice, at least they are self aware about it. Fanservice bothers me way more in animes that take themselves seriously. KLK makes it a point to go out of its way to have fanservice, but its mainly done for humors sake I find.

 

Plus the fanservice is not just aimed at a male audience, so at least there's some double standard.

Now that I've regained my composure, thoughts time:

The series was fairly great but the ending of the anime felt empty, I heard the ending of the manga was mind-blowing and decided to read ahead, I'm not usually one to read mangas and I just wanted to see if my assumption behind the entire series would be proven right, there were far too many hints throughout the series for it to not deliver on my expectations.

 

It delivered. It more than delivered, actually. Despite knowing what could've been ahead, it still got to me and then the epilogue had to come around and disturbed me. I'm not usually one to be disturbed by anything but the fact that this ending managed to disturb me briefly is an accomplishment, I didn't expect it from a damn comedic series.

Don't know how I feel about the whole series after the first season but I'll let my thoughts settle down and think about it after I get this brief being-right high.

@Isichar: I'm basically the same as you when it comes to fanservice. When it's taken seriously usually I just roll my eyes a bit and go "Okay, whatever". There's no way someone that has watched the series can say with a completely straight face that KlK is trying to go that route. I mean hell, just about every episode someone is sassing Ryuko for her outfit. Especially considering as you mentioned, the fanservice is split pretty evenly and most series that go that route usually make it fairly one sided. Long story short, just going to shake my head if the argument ever comes up again.

Very excited for the next two (well, that's assuming the fights will be one episode each) episodes. Finally some backstory for the two I've been most intrigued by. I love series where I'm super hard pressed to pick a favorite character, because I love so much of the cast for different reasons. Moving forward will have to wait til later though. Alas, the need to sleep.

I was not all that worried about Okabe tbh, I was pretty much expecting it to be a typical happy ending like the TV series. I'm a bit disappointed at how average it ended up being. It didn't add anything to the series whatsoever

sorry for the lag in responding isichar, this has been a crazy week. I tried to keep this shorter (key word, tried) because i can see this turning into a thing where we just feed off of each others speculations   that said here is my response to your last shin sekai yori post:

2. yeah I never really understood how they sealed the powers of the kids. I think hypnosis is so powerful (since they have been in a controlled society all their lives, pretty much indoctrinated) that the priests are able to subconsciously control the power of the children by setting mental barriers. (*edit: meaning that I think they never actually lose their cantus, its just dormant which I think you said?)

 

and the first thing I thought whenever she started to restore the others cantus was "no, she is going to screw them up!"

 

wow, I had no idea that the manga handled shun's death that way. it is so much later in the anime, and while I enjoyed the scene that they had in the anime, the one you described sounds just as enjoyable. the fact that shun shows faith in saki, that saki would feel an obligation to be true to shun in a ideological way, and the fact the she remembers all this immediately after she returns, makes me feel a lot better. it just makes me feel like she is given more of a moral purpose, where before she was oblivious for literally years

 

3. I remember the minoshiro saying something about a wolf gene? I think that is the attack suppression gene that was mentioned, it didn't really talk about it much so I forgot it pretty quick, but that does make sense. I also find it very interesting that the world view of the person can completely change or overcome the biological/social boundaries placed on that person... albeit in a rather gruesome way in this case. (I find it interesting in the context of the show, and make it part of my reality in every day life )

 

I also find that interesting, pretty much a mechanism that was created by the society that has the potential to destroy the society...

 

4.yeah, not a good decision by the school no matter what way you look it.

 

5. hmm when I say brainwashing, I mean it in a pretty broad sense. but not only that, I seem to remember that in the anime the 5 kids were singled out to not have something done to them. im not entirely sure what it was, but I think it was something to do with personality control or something like that

 

6. maybe I am just used to things that are more toned down and less rushed. I like to take my time with any type of media, and when I feel that a show is being rushed or is rushing you, then I think it detracts from the experience. I think most people would have put it down because it wasn't what they expected. it wasn't quite school drama, wasn't quite violent action, etc but was rather a combination of many different approaches. I liked it, but I supposed it could be off-putting for someone with different expectations (I didn't really go in with any expectations)

 

slow burners with good stories are my thing!

 

7. saki definitely changed, Im not really sure I agree with you on how she changed. I remember her saying that she didn't even know what was right or wrong anymore, but I think that was really a comment on how the counsel dealt with squealer and his reaction to what they said about him. I think that was there to underline the fact that eventually the audience would find out that monster rats really are humans and that squealer really was doing what he thought was best for his people (as you say later).

 

8. I agree that It would have been nice to see the shun/saki relationship dynamic. it seemed from the very beginning that shun/saki would end up together, and I was ok with that, but then he died and it was kind of a 'wtf' moment because I had just assumed that it was going to happen (and I don't think there was enough there to say whether or not I would have liked that relationship, probably so though based on what I saw)

 

9. I did definitely like the last part squealer had when he went back to his original name and claimed to be human. it kind of made you think about 'human' as something that you cant touch or see, but is more of an abstract concept.

I like scenes that have a purpose (demonstrating the relationship between two characters, like the scene between maria/saki before maria disappears), but if it is added just for fanservice and if the fanservice gets to be detrimental to the story im not ok with it. (believe it or not I had a whole paragraph outlining where someone should draw the line between acceptable amounts of fanservice/sexualization, and just being offensive; but i scrapped this because I thought it would be too controversial... that and it largely depends not only on the amount, but how you handle it as well)

2. I didn't fully understand what was going on with them losing and regaining their Cantus tbh, the anime kind of confused me in that regards.

 

Yeah I really enjoyed the Shun/Saki moments in the manga. They are some of the most well drawn panels in the manga and are pretty enjoyable plot wise. Even though I found episode 10 really enjoyable in the anime, the manga left a bit more of an impact here.

 

3. Yes, the wolf gene was what prevented it. Similar to how it mentioned the way the society was built to use physical contact similar to the Bonobo's, and why homosexuality was commonplace.

 

5. Tomiko mentioned that normally children would be brainwashed to make them more docile, but group 1 was an exception, which made the village more cautious of them.

 

6. Good on you for this. I try and be open to all kinds of stories to try and appreciate what they have to offer. I have no problems with slow burners myself as long as the payoff is worth it, and I certainly felt it was in Shin Sekai Yori.

 

Some of the best stories out there are the slow burners and ones you wouldn't think much of at the start.

 

7. The comment was in regards to Squealers court decision, but thats what I meant. Right and wrong comes down to context and whos asking. The court that condemned Squealer is really no more innocent then he is, but they will still condemn him to protect their own lives. Its easy to see things from only your point of view and justify anger towards something that threatened your way of life, but what if your partially responsible for threatening their lives as well? When it comes to Saki changing I just think she came to understand how open the moral questions are, I don't think that means abandoning morality or anything though.

 

8. I like how the story handled Shun, I think a straight up romance between him and Saki would have been a little boring tbh. He had an impact on her life, but she due to the cruel nature of the world she did not get to build a life with him, it makes sense in the context of the plot I think.

 

9. Yeah, overall it was really his impact on the story despite how insignificant he initially comes off as, that made him such a memorable character for me.

 

11. I agree. It was definitely, without a doubt done for fan service in the manga.

 

12. It was in #2 of my last post, I'll repost it and highlight the part the mentions it.

 

'' -  In the anime the kids run into a False Minoshiro, question it, the monk shows up, kills the False Minoshiro and then seals there powers. The monk is soon killed, the kids are split up and the story follows Saki and Satoru as they are saved by Squera, who with Sotaru's powers defeats a large portion of the Ground Spider forces before Kiroumaru shows up to finish it and the kids are reunited. The time skip occurs and then the events following Shuns descent into a Karmic Demon occur.

 

Tbh I never fully understood the whole thing with sealing and unsealing the powers in the anime, and I was not entirely sure how seriously to take Saki's speculation that she caused it by restoring the powers incorrectly. I would be interested to see how the novel handled this since the anime and manga are quite different, but I got the impression that it was something that was dormant (albeit it rare) in everyone. This is one point I will have to eventually go back and watch for to see if it is actually described properly.

 

 - In the manga the kids end up running into the Ground Spiders forces, are forced to run and are saved by Squera, help defend against the initial attack on the caves, and then are saved when Kiroumaru shows up to finish the ground spiders. Its during this arc that Shun begins to grow sick and ends with him transforming following the events with Kiroumaru. As Shun is transforming Saki finds him and he explains to her what is happening and that she must live on. Despite his last request Saki refuses to leave Shuns side and he uses his powers to fly them above earth and into space to share one last moment, but explains the backlash of using his powers like that would end up consuming him. Before he dies he tell Saki to find the False Minoshiro and to create a world in which people do not have to suffer the same fate that himself and Reiko did. She expresses that she does not have the strength to do it and his final words are "You can do anything, Saki" (this was a pretty epic moment in the manga to be honest).

 

A few days pass following these events, Saki and her friends have their memories altered but Saki ends up remembering everything almost immediately after, at which point she takes her friends and they find the False Minoshiro that answers their questions, only this time Mamoru gets nervous listening to it (since it was discussing things considered taboo by the village) and uses his powers to blow it away (Ironically becoming the one that Yakomaru captures and uses as his source of information). "

 

Anyways I've really enjoyed writing these responses, its really helped deepen my appreciation for the series, so thank you for taking the time to listen and respond! It does not have to be pages of questions and indepth responses but do let me know your thoughts when you finish the final Madoka movie we maybe we can have some juicy discussions around that, if your up for it

Berserk has a great story, but has some hardcore hentai moments that would make you cringe, the manga especially.

I would say wait until the movie before getting into any real lengthy discussions, since it does add some context to the TV series as well. But I'm also down for any discussion about the TV series in the meantime.
