Its worth waiting a few more weeks for the DVD quality release though. Don't stream a LQ version.

The LQ is pretty bleh, yeah.

Especially since it's filmed at a bad angle. So the top left part of the screen is cut off.

I would say wait until the movie before getting into any real lengthy discussions, since it does add some context to the TV series as well. But I'm also down for any discussion about the TV series in the meantime.

first off @simfamSP read the GOT books! the shows are going to take forever to catch up to the books (years at least) and you don't have to watch a 20 yo trying to act like a 13 yo!

 

ok so here are some short bits/thoughts on pmmm that come to mind (these are just honest thoughts, with no offense meant):

-so I really like the relationships between the different characters. you have  the madoka/homura dynamic and then sayaka/kyoko. I especially liked how sayaka was able to redeem kyoko in the end, or at least in a way. they seemed to have a paired backstory thing going on

-I am being continually confounded by the number of christian references I keep finding in anime...

-please tell me someone else hated kyubey

-were you actually surprised by the whole "steal your soul and condemn you to be a witch" thing?

-I like to think that sayaka was the best character, meaning that she was the most moral/dedicated to her beliefs (she was actually my second favorite character). I really felt that she was awesome in a lot of ways for resisting the cycle and for fighting for the innocent. also respected her for honoring her wish. sad as hell because I really wanted kyoko and sayaka to end up together... for that matter I wanted homura and madoka to end up together. which brings me to...

-we can all pretty much agree that this was an indirect shoujo ai right?

 

and on that last note, are there any heartfelt yuri romances that people here would recommend? I know its not a popular genre but if you had something you might want to suggest (aside from all the other great suggestions I have gotten so far) I would appreciate it!

1. Mami and Kyokos relationship that was fleshed out in the Different Story Manga is my favorite. Classic Mentor and Apprentice sorta like Obi-Wan and Anakin if they were written better and Obi-wan was borderline insane. Also Mamis my fave girl .

2. Well one of Madokas inspirations was Faust. So the biblical references make sense.

3. I despise Kyubey.

4. Loved that twist.

5. Sayakas story line is pretty good. But lacks the fragile grasp on sanity Mami has (Different Story Manga. It's great)

6. I guess. But anyone who knows me on the RWBY thread knows I think shipping is bleh for multiple reasons. Though I do find things that make Homura a crazed stalker hilarious.

1. Yeah the dynamic was great. I like how Sayaka reminded Kyoko how much she use to enjoy the stories in which love and justice prevailed.

2. Wait until the RBS, theres WAY more christian refrences.

3. Its pointless to hate him, but I will reserve any other comment on him until you've watched TRS

4. Sayaka's story was great, agreed.

5. Was it shoujo? There was some clear and strong Yuri subtext, which the creators are aware of. Personally I think people get a bit too focused on the romance side of things here, but I do think there was definitely potential. I would say that Madoka/Homura are clearly soul mates though. Overall I would say yes to the question.

 

As for Yuri recommendations

Sakura trick, Strawberry Panic for anime if you want something lighter. Kannazuki No Miko for something a bit heavier.

Citrus (Saburo Uta) for manga, still ongoing though.

QB got off light in the TV series, in the third movie he gets EXACTLY what he deserves. Anyone who hates QB is bound to love what happens to that little bastard. I love how he realizes that the cycles are too dangerous the moment it can effect him but Homura is just like "Nope, you aint going anywhere you little mofo"

As a general rule, Japanese VA's get more into their role.

 

Try watching Escaflowne the movie (fight between Dillandau and Van, when Dillandau flamethrowers him) dubbed, then watch it subbed. Heck, just look at it on YouTube.

 

The Japanese VA sounds like they have literally set him on fire and recorded.
