1. Yeah the dynamic was great. I like how Sayaka reminded Kyoko how much she use to enjoy the stories in which love and justice prevailed.

2. Wait until the RBS, theres WAY more christian refrences.

3. Its pointless to hate him, but I will reserve any other comment on him until you've watched TRS

4. Sayaka's story was great, agreed.

5. Was it shoujo? There was some clear and strong Yuri subtext, which the creators are aware of. Personally I think people get a bit too focused on the romance side of things here, but I do think there was definitely potential. I would say that Madoka/Homura are clearly soul mates though. Overall I would say yes to the question.

 

As for Yuri recommendations

Sakura trick, Strawberry Panic for anime if you want something lighter. Kannazuki No Miko for something a bit heavier.

Citrus (Saburo Uta) for manga, still ongoing though.

1 definitely cool. it was interesting because when kyoko was first introduced I was thinking she would be the antihero, but then sayaka was able to help her remember the reason that she first made her wish (or at least part of the reason) and I felt this really helped me to connect to both of them

2 I have actually found christian references in other anime too, which isn't a problem, I just expected more 'eastern' philosophy and less 'western'. though I read somewhere on a discussion forum that somebody read the themes in pmmm in relation to nirvana and Buddhism/Jainism/Hinduism so idk

3 ugh everybody has these pmmm rebellion spoilers in the last couple pages, and its killing me to not read them! don't worry though, I didn't

4 just as a side note, in spoiler free summaries of rebellion I have read that its about homura (you also said it focused on her), so is kyoko in that one? and do you get to see anything about sayaka, or is she just abandoned as having found peace and moved on in the spirit/madoka world?

5 ok so I think shoujo ai means that it is pretty much the emotional side of love between two women (in anime), and yuri has that but also has explicit sexual scenes or things of that nature. (i'm an amateur, so I might be interpreting the different meanings wrong) so when I said shoujo ai, that's what I meant. basically that the emotional bond between sayaka/kyoko and homura/madoka was explained pretty well, the love was hinted at strongly, but there were no explicit parts (or direct mention). and I wasn't trying to focus on romance, because its obviously not a romance, it has some implications here and there, I just wanted to know how other people read into this

 

I have heard good things about strawberry panic, that it didn't get too fanserice-y or offensive. and you have seen kannazuki no miko? what did you think of it?

1. Mami and Kyokos relationship that was fleshed out in the Different Story Manga is my favorite. Classic Mentor and Apprentice sorta like Obi-Wan and Anakin if they were written better and Obi-wan was borderline insane. Also Mamis my fave girl .

2. Well one of Madokas inspirations was Faust. So the biblical references make sense.

3. I despise Kyubey.

4. Loved that twist.

5. Sayakas story line is pretty good. But lacks the fragile grasp on sanity Mami has (Different Story Manga. It's great)

6. I guess. But anyone who knows me on the RWBY thread knows I think shipping is bleh for multiple reasons. Though I do find things that make Homura a crazed stalker hilarious.

1. so mami gets more development in the manga i'm guessing? because even though she played a really big role in the show you never really got any insight into her backstory or personality. other than she was similar to sayaka in the way that she was idealistic and in the magical girl business to help people out. so I definitely liked her for that.

2. faust? really? I can see that, but in the faust legend he surrenders morals in order to get knowledge and pleasure. so while there are similarities there I think the show is better in the sense that it shows you can maintain your morals even if you are in a living hell. which is true

6. I didn't really ship them, I ship in almost every fictional media I come across, but only where there is the potential for love/romance. so here, no I didn't ship anyone, I just wanted to know how other people felt about the implications here

2. Faust is one of the main inspirations, like clones mentioned. I find most of the philosophy in PMMM to be mostly centred around duality and the idea of cycles.
3. They mostly involve the treatment of QB in the new movie lol.

5. I'm not going to lie, I only make minor differentiations but I get what your saying. This is another point we should probably wait until you've seen the movie to discuss though.

As for strawberry panic I don't recall it being overly fanservicy. It has some kissing and implied sex but not much more in that regards. And I definitely don't see it as being offensive at all.

I saw kannazuki no miko a long time ago, it was pretty good, though I don't remember a lot of specifics tbh. I know it's one of the most popular for the genre though.

So, I started Okami-San and Her Seven Companions again. One of the first shows I watched, but I ended up stopping for some unknown reason. I like it.

 

And I watched the Fullmetal Alchemist movie. Star of Milos. It was seriously badass, like, holy bajeezus. L'arc En Ciel did the theme at the end too, and it made me remember Ready, Steady, Go! Best part about the old series was that song.

I just finished 5 Centimeters Per Second.

It was a bit bittersweet, I wish the ending didn't leave me feeling so damn empty, but I mostly liked it. I guess it goes without saying, but the animation was absolutely gorgeous, so much so that sometimes they would stop the story to go "Look! Look at how beautiful it is!" for a while. I really like how they used so many different locations in the film so that you could really appreciate the animation in each scene.

 

I guess I'll check out The Garden of Words.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei- a total trip of an anime that makes a suicidal man and social comedy a matter of comedy. Crazy ending, but to my surprise I actually mused up the twist before it happened.

it was so sad! when you say empty, you are not kidding. I imagine I could have been diagnosed with clinical depression after watching that thing I actually liked the story, even though it rips your heart out. because takaki was so obsessed that he wasn't able to move on with his life, even though apparently akira was able to (though she didn't really seem happy?). spoiler inside the spoiler: *in the manga takaki actually meets kanae again shortly after having seen akira, and its implied that they meet, talk, etc.* when I read this it made me feel a lot better since kanae was my favorite character in the film. she was determined, compassionate, yet perceptive and shy.

and the animation was beautiful, even though I watched it online it was still stunning so I imagine if you got to watch it from a dvd or bluray it would be ten times better

I wanna ask you guys something. Since you're all more into the anime culture than I am. I've only been doing this for a month really, so I'm still a noob.

 

By why is art so important to people? The quality etc etc... I thought it would be kind of like graphics in the gaming circle. Important, but not so much that there would be actual discussions on it. Or is it completely different?

 

So far I've seen styles that are really different from each other. They've never bothered me that much. My favourite has to be FMA:B's style, and least? Well, Eden of the East's style. But the whole art thing would never really put me off something unless it looked like Atari's E.T.

 

Right now, the writing is what has really attracted me to anime. 90% of the shows I've watched so far have had great plots, and failing that, their characters have saved the day (Angel Beats is one of them for example.)

 

So yeah, I'm curious to see the other side of this argument. The one I can't really see from my POV right now.

 

 

P.S I watched the entire thing in subs. I'm curious to see how my reaction to dubs will be hehe. Oh, and when the Japanese attempt English it's about the funniest freaking thing ever. Perhaps the Japanese thing the same when the dubs attempt Japanese

 

as someone who is also an amateur I would have to say I agree. keep in mind the amount of anime I have seen has been small, and the ones I have seen I have read up on first, so this has probably filtered out some bad ones that I would have run across otherwise.

 

I only ever go out for story, good characters, writing etc. but like Aotearas said there are some really kid looking ones that will irk me and I just won't watch them. generally though these are not in the areas that I like and are pretty rare except when the anime goes into spoof mode or something like that (as far as I have seen). I have only had two anime that I dropped because of kiddy visuals, and they had a mediocre story.

 

as far as bad production quality? I haven't run across anything yet that I would call bad, or even dated, and I have seen some from back in the 90s. generally bad production quality is less of bother than kiddy animations.

 

and please don't ever watch dubs! there are some that are good, but on the whole the original will be a lot better in my opinion
