So I finished Gulty Crown...
Yeah, I wasn't too impressed.
It tires to be something its not, and it's a damned shame because it DOES have potential. It's just 22 episodes is too short for something that's supposed to be 'epic.' And unlike other animes where switching your brain off (or half off, or a quarter off) usually does the trick, in the end, I'm overwhelmed with a feeling of 'meh.'
Let's take a look at another anime which has its inconsistencies and plotholes: Future Diary.
Though the plot is shaky, the characters and relationships between them is what makes it compelling enough to enjoy. If something is sh*t, it takes a lot of skill to make that sh*t sparkle. Guilty Crown starts of as a Code Geass wannabe, but then turns into a crappy FF game (and I'm not saying FF games are crappy, I'm just using FF as an analogy here because the crappy games in the franchise turn out to be just cheap.)
The characterisation needed work, the only character that actually develops well is Shou (which I wish Yukki did in Future Diary the little ******) and the ending tries to be bittersweet but makes no attempt to explain anything at all.
It might be one of those cases where "analysis" is needed, but look. If you WANT to tell a complex narrative you have to give your audience links and depth in order to establish the full picture, i.e, Ghost in the Shell. That show makes you use your brain but gives you the TOOLS in order to use it. It doesn't confuse you with pretentious nonsense so ambiguous that it makes it seem 'deep.' That's just heading to ME3 ending territory. A place where no plot wants to end up in.
So, final verdict? I guess it's enjoyable, but it just leaves you disappointed when you can see all the potential the show had to be something God-Tier but ended up wasting it away.
Christ, the thing even put me off anime for a while. I even WENT OUT on a Friday for a change of pace. I'm gonna have to watch something good next. Something certain I will enjoy. A show like Cowboy Bebop, where even if you don't know what the hell is going to happen, you're still sure as hell it's gonna be worth your f*cking time.
The music is awesome, though. I'll give it that.
What did you have in mind for next?
You should just watch some of the classics. There's probably a few of the cult classics you have yet to see.

I'm tempted just to go for Legend of Galactic heroes next, since from what I've heard it's everything that I love and look for.
But maybe something light hearted will do next. So I'm going for Planetes.
I've got a bunch of shows that really would do it on the list. So it's not like I have the option of crap vs good. More like TW2 or PST for my next RPG play through.

Watched the first episode, basically this was my reaction.

Oooooh Planetes, yeah I really liked that one.

Yeah, light hearted all right. ![]()
It's still full of crying later on, you copy?
For Garden of Words I don't think it will blow you away or anything (actually the animation will, but you've seen enough of Shinkai's films to expect that already) but for a 45 minute anime, its worth checking out.
Well, sounds like I have a few things to check out myself. A good romance is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I'll check out Aoi Hana after I finish the one I'm currently watching now. I've been watching Chihayafuru which is a sports/romance anime and I love it (so much that it will probably end up being one of my top 10 favorite animes). One of the main male characters reminds me a bit of Kanae from from 5 Centimeters, which is kind of depressing actually, because like Kanae from 5 centimeters hes my favorite and I get the impression the girl he loves is completely oblivious to it and only seems interested in a guy she has not even talked to in years.. That said it has one of the more mature and well handled love triangles (which is something I usually despise) I've seen in a story, and the group dynamic is amazing.
if you do end up watching aoi hana, be sure to read the manga afterwards. neither are very long, and both have finished running.
let me know what you think if you ever get around to watching the anime and/ reading the manga!
hmm a romance series you would put in your top ten overall? that has a character similar to kanae? well I will put that on my to-do list! and just a quick question, is the story of chihayafuru more plot based or not? I just wanted to know if I should expect a little sports with romance, or a little romance with sports
and I can't believe how many anime/manga romances I have seen that have this unrequited love polygon thing going on! its like everybody loves someone that loves somebody else, and everyone ignores their admirer because they think their love is different... ugh, cliché and depressing ![]()
*edit: why didn't someone tell me about planetes? a sci-fi that has character development and themes? come on that fits my criteria perfectly! ![]()

Oh...
Well, do you mean crying as in Clannad feels crying or as in
"And who, are you the proud Lord said? That I must bow so low?"
Orrrrr...
Cowboy Bebop's "bang" kind of crying?
Well whatever it is, as long as it's good, and the first episode left me with a really good impression.

The characters will do all the crying, don't worry.

Alright, so they aren't cannibals, but I giggled.

Well so fat today I've watched 9 episodes and it's a bloody excellent series.
Seriously I will never understand how somebody could 'hate' anime when there are shows like FMA:B, Cowboy Bebop and a bunch of other shows that are so damned good.
@mhmbaRS1
So far its been 50-50, but I'm only 1/3 through the series atm so take what I say with a grain of salt. Most of the character and plot development has occurred through the sport. What I like about it is you can really see every characters strengths, weaknesses and overall personalities based on how they play the game, and you don't really need to know the sport well to understand whats going on, they explain the rules and strategy enough for you to follow it. Personally I'm just in it for the romance, I never was huge on sports myself, but at the same time I am really enjoying how well they are able to expand on the characters just by playing Karuta.
BTW I didn't mention Planetes for 1 reason... I completely forgot about it
I use to watch tons of anime with my sister and a buddy like 10 years ago and that was one of them, there's a bunch of titles I watched I doubt I would even be able to recognize right away now. Oddly enough its my same friend from way back when that has recently gotten my addicted to anime again ![]()
@SimfamSP
Most the people I talk to that hate anime have not actually watched a whole ton and a lot of time judge anime based on what they see on western TV which is unfair imo. Personally I don't think its fair to hate on any storytelling medium as a whole. I get that anime has certain tropes people can find outputting, but its still pretty silly to believe that all anime is bad as a result or something that is just for kids based on what plays over here.
My dads one of those people who never saw anime as anything more then kids shows for merchandising, probably because of all the shows like Pokemon, Digimon and so on that I watched when I was younger ![]()
Oh well, their loss.
@Heirophant
Actually I've been thinking about reading that for a few months now. I think I may pick it up soon.

well it sounds like it would be an interesting series, I don't mind sports but I don't think I would watch something that has it as the main focus. but if they use it as a way to expand the characters and develop relationships then I would probably enjoy it.
and no hard feelings I was just joking
and just think, if your friend wouldn't have gotten you re-addicted to anime, I wouldn't be addicted to anime. not that its a bad thing, actually I think its a good thing
@simfamSP @isichar from my experience people write off stuff not from their own culture. there are plenty of works of art from other places in the world, but there's this sense of ethnocentricity that makes people discard any opinion but their own (or one that reinforces their opinion)... so if its not from here or isn't considered something 'western' culture grew from, then it doesn't get the acclaim it should
and with animation the limit of the show is the limit of your imagination. that's why a well done anime will outstrip a well done live action american show any day of the week in my opinion.

Good no pics, I need to catch up. I doubt anyone here outside of you, Some Geth, and me look at manga. At least, you two are the only ones I recall ever bringing them up on a consistent basis, whenever y'all post in here.

@Isichar.
Exactly! It's like those douchebags who slag of the gaming industry with only pacman as their damned reference for what the medium really is. It pisses me off, it's so damn ignorant.
Anime is freaking awesome. Straight after Breaking Bad there weren't any shows that even matched up to it. Sure, there was GOT but that was awaiting for another season but aside from that? Well, when I watched Death Note, you can basically guess how my expectations weren't met. I never expected anything as good as that, and the good thing is, that it kept on getting better. From the twenty plus shows I've seen this month and a half I can only really point out one or two that haven't impressed me that much.

Its definitely satisfied me so far. I have been watching it alongside another anime called Texhnolyze, which has almost the exact opposite kind of atmosphere and tone, I kind of enjoy the balance of dark and moody with colorful and romantic lol.
No worries, I didn't take the comment as a serious complaint. When I think about it I actually watched a lot of animes as a kid so there's bound to be a few that would have completely slip out of my mind until they are mentioned. Its kind of cool in a way, I like how you can get a bunch of suggestions and still come across hidden gems that are exactly what you were looking for later on. It goes to show just how much anime is out there. I've been hardcore into anime for about 5ish months now and I still run across things I've never heard mentioned that when I watch or read I end up falling in love with. It really helps fuel the addiction when you can constantly keep finding so much that keeps you interested. My list of things to watch just keeps getting longer instead of shorter with each anime I watch (SimfamSP understands
) I would say its a good thing, assuming you enjoy the addiction as much as I do ![]()
I agree, but it mostly does come down to opinion and preference. I like the creativity, I also like that many animes are capable of dealing with a lot mature themes better then I (usually) see in other mediums. I think every medium has had stories that could not have worked as effectively in another kind of medium. I get that anime just does not appeal to some peoples preferences, it also has a lot of its own tropes that can be really annoying and off putting.
@SimfamSP
To be fair your also cherry picking from a fairly extensive medium you didn't have much experience with previously. If you keep an eye on the animes that air each season, I would say there's just as much generic animes as there are TV shows. Ive watched a bunch of new ongoing shows but so far Kill La Kill was the only one that I loved in this last season. Its just like anything else, you get a few great titles each year but most of it is meh.
Thats one reason I'm happy I forgot about anime for so long and rediscovered it, I have no shortage of the good ones to keep me entertained now.

Yeah, your right. But to be fair, I have no other option BUT to cherry pick! xD Like I said, from all the shows I've watched in the last month and a half, only 2 have really left me disappointed. That's a good record for anime there, it's not like I've only watched ten or fifteen you know :-)
But I suppose you can look at it this way. To base your opinion on the generic from any medium is to really damn yourself. It's like me as a gamer basing my opinions on the TONS of crap, half-assed and lame titles out there. The same goes for TV, cinema, literature and, of course, anime :-)
P.S
I finished Planetes and all I can say is this: it was absolutely beautiful. There is no other way I could sum it up. It's thrilling, psychological, philosophical, compelling, hilarious, touching, political, ethical and its science (from what I can see) is pretty great stuff.
It had to be great if I watched 25 episodes in one sitting. Ahh, the pleasures of a day completely off.
Now to choose another anime. Damn this is always the hard part ><
I still need to bump into something as good as FMA:B though. That show just blew me away. Easily it ranks in my top 5 in my favourite piece of TV/Film.
