Utena was a good. MhmbaSR1, I could definitely see that one being the type of anime your looking for too.

Definitely going to second that one for you, SR1. Since you enjoyed PMMM so much, Utena is pretty much one of the granddaddies of magical girl deconstruction anime. Well... the anime at least. I admittedly don't really care for the manga. It's yet another case of amazing music as well. I will say that if anyone does watch it though, please stick it out til the second arc (14 episodes in). The first arc is rather weak in hindsight but it does nicely lay the brickwork down for the amazing that comes later. Also, the filler episodes (roughly one per arc) are both terrible and wonderful at the same time. :lol:

yeah I have had shoujo kakumei utena on my list for a while. it got put there because I have read in multiple places that it is a pinnacle of yuri, and also that it was a good anime besides. I'm actually trying to wait to watch it because I have also read that it can be a little 'weird' (maybe in the way that isichar mentioned earlier?) with people actually saying that if you are new to anime you should probably wait to watch it. so I am trying to get more acclimatized to anime in general first.

don't worry, I rarely drop a series and I enjoy slower paced media, maybe more so than some fast paced media

also, I have finished the first 3 seasons of the maria-sama ga miteru anime (free time on spring break!!) and I am half way through the fourth, so:

its good, but not as good as what I have read. I mean its a good ways above the bar in pretty much all areas, but my rating for the four seasons put it just above average. they are as follows (out of 10) 7-6-8-7 (permanent rating for fourth season pending completion). if anyone wants more details, opinions, or has questions, feel free to ask and I can post more info.

and though im not sure, I think some jerk I was chatting with online spoiled something from pmmm: rebellion for me. I was so mad, wanted to reach through my computer and slap whoever it was :angry:

*edit: and this is my 100th post! :D

Grats on your 100th post! :wizard:

Utena is not 'weird', not in the context that I was using that word at least :pinched:

When I say weird I mean..

Spoiler

Utena is definitely strange, but not in a bad way. Its more of a really artsy symbolic sort of strange (from what I can remember)

Just curious, for TRS what was spoiled?

0_o ok yeah, that's weird, honestly hope I never run across that (fate zero is officially on my not watch list)

im not sure if its a spoiler because i'm not even sure if its true, but...

Spoiler

if its true, I swear, I can't watch pmmm without spoiling something for myself, and unintentionally at that

Hmm. How do I word this without venturing into spoiler territory... SKU definitely isn't what I'd consider weird in the vast world of anime. There are plot points that could surely make people uncomfortable but for me it was all handled in a very mature manner. I'll also note that regarding the yuri content within, it's super subtext level. I admit that as much as I do love the sub-genre, I tend to mostly watch subtext heavy series (PMMM, Utena and Noir for example), mostly because I have this inkling that anything that goes further than that might just be too much of the frustrating fanservice I've rambled on. Of course I could be incredibly wrong on that one, and would be quite pleased to find out so! :lol:

@mhmbaSR1

phew, I was worried something important was spoiled.

Don't worry, your good.

As for the Sayaka and Kyoko thing... its subtext and it can be interpreted different ways, regardless I thought it was well handled.

Btw Fate Zero is a totally good watch, its just got some really messed up mature content in it. Its really not much worse then Madoka Magica, its even made by the same person too.

@AnimusandAnima

Utena has a bit more then subtext from what I remember (I seem to recall a scene in the movie...) but yeah, its mostly subtext.

Oh yeah, the movie totally breaks the whole subtext point and goes for broke. You're remembering quite well there. :P Funny story with that too (I've spent years on an SKU forum so sometimes I think I have too much useless info on the series). Long story short, the manga creator more or less said she would withdraw her support from the series if the yuri content was made explicit, so it stayed on the subtext level. When the movie came about, Ikuhara basically gave the proverbial finger to the whole mess and did what he wanted to. In the end it was sweet as hell. :3

@AnimusandAnima

still, I am new to anime, so I might think its a little weird. though I tend to agree with you, if it is handled maturely then the weirdness becomes a lot less of a problem. is it subtext? I don't have a problem with subtext and plan on watching it anyway, but from what I have read (spoiler free) the show was treated as more yuri than anything else, and I don't think you can get that kind of acclaim from the yuri community without having at least some canon relationships... course I am going on hearsay and second hand info, so I will defer to your judgment :D

and if you want a yuri that is great with basically no fanservice, watch then read aoi hana! its perfect!

@isichar

wait so what I was told wasn't true? no don't answer that question. and I didn't really expect them to go farther than subtext because that was all that the original had anyway, which I was fine with.

@MhmbaSR1

It's not something I would worry about or speculate on beforehand too much if I were you.

Truth is until you understand the context of the situation and whats going on in the movie, I wouldn't be able to explain it properly. Keep in mind that this is a sequel and one of the characters we are talking about shouldn't even be around...

@AnimusandAnima

Sounds like you use to love Utena the way I love PMMM lol

@SR1: I personally do consider SKU a yuri series, no doubt about that. To me it's pretty clear but if there's one thing years on the previously mentioned forum have taught me, it's that some folks do interpret it as a purely platonic sort of thing. Now you'll find some incredibly militant folks that will say you're seeing what you want to see if you interpret the relationship as anything above platonic, but at least for me all signs point that way. I'm hoping this makes sense, I've trying really hard to word things in a way that couldn't possibly spoil.

Which I will say, since you've watched PMMM as well I can make this little joke here: (Spoiler coding to be safe, only the series)

Spoiler

@Isichar: The funny thing there is that I avoided SKU for a really long time because I was under the impression it was just another magical girl anime and while it's a genre I periodically enjoy, I don't actively go looking for it. About five years back I saw a review somewhere and it got me thinking I was assuming entirely wrong so I decided to check it out. Sure enough, I ate my words. PMMM basically had everything set up to be perfect for me. Another magical girl deconstruction, amazing visuals and music by my favorite modern composer. Little did I know that I would fall just as much in love with it as I do SKU. I'm happy there are folks here I can discuss the series with, and probably after I finally get to see Rebellion Story I'll see what I can dig up about the production. :3

I walked into PMMM expecting nothing. I didn't research it beforehand, I didn't know anything about Gen Urobuchi.. when I was about 2 1/2 episodes in I remember thinking that "well it wasn't terrible, it really wasn't that interesting" little did I know....

lol

Regarding Homura and Madoka... TV series spoilers (no TRS)

I was gonna give it a try, but I felt like asking here first before doing so. I know it's a kind of sequel to Bacanno (which is greaaaatt btw, I'd recommend it to anyone) but you know how some sequels go...

Oh, I can feel the presence of a annoying ghost-cyber-AI-child right behind me... I WONDER WHY?!

The Baccano! anime got a nice story arc properly adapted from the light novels, on the other hand, Durarara! ended rather abruptly, with nothing solved. Still worth a watch, but check out the light novels instead if you want a conclusion. It isn't a sequel though, but they share the same universe (cameo and references).

Thanks. I might check it after I finish the Spice and Wolf light novels.

Yes, I've been talking about those since 1806 but progress is slow so...

Heh.

I'm watching Highschool of the Dead for the giggles atm, something short. It's a fun watch, nothing amazing, and the fanservice is so blatant it's hilarious but yeah, if you got time to kill and want to be entertained I'd recommend it.

Boring chapter of Bleach this week. So little happened that I can't even laugh at it for being stupid. We found out that the enemy has to focus to use his abilities.. Was that really worthy of an entire chapter?

Naruto is just stupid, not the series, like Naruto himself. First he starts getting impatient despite the fact that he's learning the origins of ninjutsu, but then wastes time asking pointless questions. I'm not entirely sure where they are going with the story ATM, I was kind of hoping things would start winding down but now they are developing things more.. This series is still suppose to be ending soon, right?

My friend is still trying to get me into Bleach.

I'm too much of a nice guy to turn him down and say "I'M NOT WAITING 5 EPISODES FOR SOMEONE TO TAKE A SH*T!"

I could see you enjoying the anime, if you did ever check it out I would recommend skipping the filler seasons though.

The pacing is still not great, but I doubt you will hate it the way those of us who have been following it weekly for years do.
