Woe is me!

I must download the light novels! For my Haruhi Suzamiya fix must be satisfied this instant!

I'm gonna freaking throw away cash this month to collect the manga tho' AND the Light Novels too. Something deep inside me desires them, even if I'll probably already read them all.

Same goes for FMA:B and Spice and Wolf.

Hah! Who needs rent? (jj I don't actually pay anything!)

Lucky bastard.

I would still collect manga if I didn't already have like 4 boxes of them stored away wasting space.

Don't get me wrong, I love rurouni kenshin, FMA and all the other ones I collected, but I doubt I will ever go back and read them again.

Read? Pfft, they are mere trophies, there to symbolise my eternal love for all things nerd and otaku.

Geez, and to think I JUST got into this mess called anime. Well I've always been a nerd, but I've never been to this side of the street. I do this all the time.

I own Planescape: Torment TWICE for example. I got it on GOG originally, but I needed to have the box so I ordered it through play, com heheh xD

I still need to start that. Is it over or are episodes still coming out?

Nope episodes are still airing, I also think about giving Fairytail a shot later.

Buying a manga is like buying a game off GoG, sure its a cheap and tiny game, but once you have like 50 different games you realize that its actually taking up a **** ton of space on your PC.

Gonna bring up Bleach again, cause why not

bleach-4862821.jpg

This is a perfect example of how Bleach wastes time. Entire panels, no, entire pages wasted on nothing happening. We already knew Kenpachi was there, he showed up last chapter, and yet we need another entire page to emphasize on what a big deal his return is? I should be use to it by now, anytime a character appears after being away for a few chapters they have some super dramatic entrance. Am I suppose to be impressed because nameless soldier #457 & #458 are shocked? They could have fit 3 freaking panels in that part alone.

The entire next page is dedicated to the soldiers talking about how great he is

bleach-4862823.jpg

Seriously Tite, you dont need to use entire pages everytime you re-introduce a character. Entire page/double page panels should be special for awesome occasions, but they are so overused here and all I can think about is how much time and space they waste.

Also look at just how much dialogue you get in a page, not really all that much. I wouldn't be surprised if I could pick out 4-5 random pages on Naruto and find more dialogue going on in that then an entire chapter of Bleach... Ugh if Tite knew what he was doing he would have had Kenpachi blow out his bankai a couple panels after showing up.

I am currently rereading the graphic novel "The Plot assassinate Gihren Zabi"

Love the premise, the characters and plot, probably one of the best written side stories set in the original 0079 UC period of Mobile Suit Gundam.

And why I am I saying 'heck?' f*cking hell.

See, that's better.

The 0079 Period is the time frame of the "One Year War" Also known as the Zeon War of Independence.

The One Year War was a culmination of the hostility between Side 3's Principality of Zeon and the Earth Federation. Relations between the two had been tense since Side 3 declared themselves the independent Republic of Zeon under the leadership of Zeon Zum Deikun in UC 0058, and had only worsened since Deikun's death and the Zabi family's rise to power in UC 0068. Declaring themselves the Principality of Zeon a year later, and brutally purging Zeon Deikun's remaining followers, the Principality became increasingly hostile to the Earth Federation. In October of UC 0078, the Zeon entered a state of national mobilization, dividing their military into a Space Attack Force under the command of Dozle Zabi and a Mobile Assault Force under the command of Kycilia Zabi. Three months later, in January UC 0079, the Principality of Zeon declared open war on the Earth Federation.

-From the Gundam Wiki

Gihren Zabi was the oldest son of Zeon Head of State Degwin Zabi and acting Supreme commander of its Military forces. Late into the Conflict, Zeon renegades seek to assassinate him to enable a more peaceful ending of hostilities between the Earth Federation and the Principlaity given that by this point the war was beginning to turn against them. It's based loosely off the historical attempt to assassinate Hitler by several of his own senior military commanders in the year of 1944.

Gihren himself is a self styled follower of Hitler in so far as he believes Spacenoids to be superior to Earthnoids due to them "not being bound by gravity" its a metaphysical argument in so far that Humanity begins its next phase of evolution in space.

Anywho for a brief overview of what i have just said, check out the bio for the literature in question, also there is this nifty Toonami promo for the 8th ms team which is a side story taking place in the one year war period, it covers a bit of what i just said.

It's only scratching the surface though, i explained what i was talking about none of the context truly or the details.

And the One Year war is only the beginning of the Saga.

Zeon rises to face off against the Federation under several guises through out the decades.

For example lets discuss the final battle of the war, the battle at A Boa Qu.

Which was Zeon's final line of defense before you reached their home colonies, Side three.

It was a massive construct carved out of an asteroid, designed to serve as both fortress and factory it was where the largest mobile suit battle of the entire war took place, Despite Zeon initially maintaining the advantage due to the destruction of a vast portion of the Federation fleet under General Revel prior to the battle, Zeon still faced near six to one odds from their Federation Counterparts. By this point Zeon had been completely pushed off of Earth for the most part, only surviving in remote and isolated pockets through the planet, It had just lost its second Factory Fortress at Solomon and it was clear to both sides the war was rapidly reaching its climax.

Zeon's Military by this point was a broken and tattered shell of its former glory, many of its Veteran Pilots long since dead or in various other theaters by the time of the battle, Never the less Zeon had several advantages including the new Mobile Suit Dolos class Carriers, The Gelgoog model Mobile suit and A boa Qu it self, It was a massive fortified position surrounded by a picket of the remaining Zeonic Navy including the new Dolos Class Carriers, Behind the Navy was the collection of mobile suits that could be fielded by mostly novice pilots.

The Federation had far more manpower going into the Battle despite suffering horrific losses before it even began, It still possessed several hundred warships and nearly fifteen hundred GM type Mobile Suits for the battle. Zeon for its part had a various collection of MS ranging the Zaku 2 to Gelgoogs and Doms and Rick Doms among other specialty type MS for the battle, this numbered around six to seven hundred, and their navy was less then a hundred ships strong.

The Battle began on the date of December 29th of UC 0079 and it concluded on January 1st UC 0080. For nearly a day and a half two armada's and mobile suit corps tore each other apart, loss was felt on both sides and Gihren Zabi the Supreme Commander of Zeon and acting Head of State after the death of his father was directing the battle personally from the Command Center of A boa qu, Gihren had arranged the battle field you see beforehand, he knew he couldn't compete with Federation numbers so he turned A boa qu into a meat grinder of crossfire and hardened strong points to rain fire down upon to the enemy from. And for nearly twelve hours this continued until his sister, his sole surviving sibling by this point arrived and confronted him upon the death of their father and his supposed peace talks with the Federation.

Then the unthinkable happened, Kycilia Zabi shot her brother, Acting head of state, Supreme Commander and the sole reason Zeon was still in the fight to actually be able to win this war, in the back. Zeon died with its final leader, With out the strategic brilliance of Gihren Zabi who by the way supposedly had an IQ of over 200. The complex defensive lines he had been directing personally rapidly began to crumble inward and the final death of Zeon's hope for winning the war with it, At about the same time Vice Admiral Delaz  a personal friend to the late Gihren Zabi (he was later nicknamed the shadow of Gihren Zabi by the Federation) learned of their Leader's death and ordered his entire fleet to pull out of the combat, including notable Zeonic Ace Anval Gato aka the Nightmare of Solomon (Basically one of the best pilots in their entire mobile suit corp) With the retreat of several fleets worth of vessels and the crumbling defensive line the Federation was finally able to begin assaulting the fortress directly.

By the new year it had fallen, And Gihren's Sister died as well in the fierce combat in the final battle of the war.

With her death the Zabi line was reduced to a trickle, Only Dozle's surviving daughter Maneva an infant at the time bore the Zabi name. She like much of Side Three's pro Zeonic Regime retreated to AXIS as the Principality was dissolved and replaced by an imposed republic via the Earth Federation. But this only set the stage for the future Zeonic Rebellion, The dream of spacenoid Independence didn't die with Gihren.

Here is a more modern depiction of the Battle of A boa Qu from the Anime: Mobile Suit: Igloo.

Ahh 8th MS Team. I just rewatched the series a few weeks ago & while I still love it I can't see the Commander the way I did when I was younger. He seems like a really novice and reckless character who's inexplicably put in charge of much more capable and responsible people. One episode he's telling everyone how the mission is the most important thing, no room for error, short window of opportunity.... After telling them this he wonders off to go find a naked girl he had peeped on before, gets abducted by guerrillas, and puts everyones lives in danger. Why, why wasn't he shot. He abandoned everyone to die because he was horny.

The original Mobile Suit Gundam does need more recognition and love, its a bit dated but its still a timeless classic in my eye.

Oh here is Gihren Zabi's famous speech delivered at his Brother Garma's Funeral.

;)

How does it stack up against Gundam Wing? I enjoyed that quite a bit when I was younger.

I still remember the closing sequence, rhythm emotion, despite not having heard it in over a decade. Pretty sure it was the first original one I ever saw in an anime, before that I only saw shitty dubbed ones *shutters*

Eh, In my eyes?

Completely blows it out of the Water in terms of premise and characters and concepts it introduces.

But you will have to deal with a fairly annoying MC and a few anime cliches that weren't cliches when this was released <_< it was released in 1979 after all.

And i love that dat speech @___@ Gihren can command me anywhere.

Woah, thats way before my time. I think the oldest anime that I've watched all the way through was Akira. I will add it to my already insanely large list of anime to watch... I'm thinking eventually I will have to go back and start focusing on all the oldies and classics I missed.

If you ever do you will find yourself with plenty to watch.

If you want to complete the Saga, 0079 itself is 49 or 50 episodes depending upon the version you watch (some just cram the last episode into 49 making it an hour rather then two separate episodes) After that? 8th ms team, side story anime, 0080 War in the Pocket side story, after that? my favorite addition of the saga, 0083 Stardust memories, after that? Zeta, then double zeta or ZZ, then Char's Counter attack (a movie) and finally we come to the most recent and ongoing addition, Unicorn.

All in all? You have close to three hundred episodes or so to go through it all.

Oh and that isn't even including all the Novels, Manga and Graphic novels.

:P UC saga is one of the longest ongoing anime era's in history, its literally 1979 to the present basically.

Just one question: How much of that is filler?

None of it, Gundam doesn't do "filler".

Another reason i love it, its all story.

Good..That was the answer I was hoping for.

Yeah, I would consider checking it out, its rather iconic and I think it would be interesting to compare how much animes have changed since back then. It's easy to forget that many cliches use to be original at one point, makes me wonder how many shows we watch today that are considered fresh and interesting that would be called cliche 10, 20, 30+ years down the road.

I try to appreciate a story under the context its being told so I get that some aspects have probably not aged well, but I'm mostly willing to look past those sort of things if the story is solid.

Well good, You should enjoy it fairly well and I'll say this, once you get past 0079 the series gets MUCH easier to watch once Amuro isn't the MC anymore.

Oh and if you are into the series afterwards, i can recommend a few side story manga and novels if you like depends on you, also have a few other bits of UC i left out mainly due to it seeming to be overwhelming to dump so much on you at once.
