agreed, I grew up in a rather narrow-minded/secluded area of the US, so I was constantly looking to media for other opinions/influences etc. I can definitely say that anime among other things has helped to keep me open minded. and being open minded is my mantra
about sakura trick: i don't like a lot of fanservice, but i will probably watch it anyway. and i don't mind 'fluff' since i don't think it hurts/helps the story, but at times when the anime has nip-slips and other gratuitous things floating around with no purpose to them, i just can't take the show seriously. unfortunately i can count on one hand the number of anime that take female love seriously
that i have seen anyway
though if sakura trick focuses on the love aspect between the two main characters i should like it.
and if it had a really good conclusion, was it set up at all for a second season? i mean did it feel like that was possible, or is it a closed book?
i am really hoping to ANR will be good! i really like the premise, though i am sure it has been done before, it is still a good setup. and with the right amount of character development and romance i can really see this becoming an awesome show!
i saw a couple of your posts on chihayafuru isichar, and from what you said (about the main talking points of the series being character dev, and romance) i will probably really enjoy it! though i have to ask one question... does it leave you hanging at the end of the second season?
so isichar, who is your profile pic of? sorry, i really have no idea who that is
Sakura Trick could go on for a second season, but it wraps up the main conflict that came up in the first season, so there's no worry about it feeling like it leaves the story hanging. It's a cute story and if you don't take it too seriously you should enjoy it. Fluff is the key word here.
Just curious have you watched Strawberry Panic yet? Its much less fluffy then Sakura Trick, meaning it treats the romance a bit more seriously and has less fan service too. I ask because I think it may bit a little more along the lines of what you're looking for.
For Chihayafuru, the show revolves around the sport of Karuta and a club of high schoolers playing it in competitions. Each season covers one year of school, and 2 Karuta competitions each held annually. The first competition is the team matches and the second is the singles matches. The seasons basically end when the singles tournament ends. The show does not really leave you with any kind of cliffhangers, and you will get a good degree of emotional payoff, but its clear that the story is intended to continue on. So far they have only developed the romance and love triangle, theres being no payoff with that yet, but I get the feeling that it is going somewhere. Most of the emotional payoff comes with each characters individual growth throughout the tournament and how they resolve to become even better the next year.
What I love about the competitions is that no two characters is treated equally. Everyone has different skills, different strategy's, different physical builds and the show loves to emphasize on how anyone can play. Even though the story has a handful of prodigies, it does not like to exclusively favor one character over the others, meaning that the main characters can and will lose just as much as they win. Whats great about that is you get to see how everyone actually improves over time. By the end of a season you will have gotten to see that characters strengths utilized, but they will also see their weaknesses and have a clear sense on how to improve. Even the prodigies that are in a whole different league of their own somehow manage to grow and improve in their own ways.
Basically long story short: The Karuta competitions and individual character arcs get satisfying conclusions, but the romance is still unresolved. Which is fine with me because the show is bending over backwards to tell me that the guy I'm rooting for ain't going to win. The third season (if there is one) would cover the third year of high school. I'm unaware of whether it would wrap it up with that or if there would be more after that.
Oh and my profile pic is actually a character from Chihayafuru, her name is Shinobu Wakamiya (don't worry, pretty sure no one here knows it
). She's the best female player in the series so far, which in Karuta is referred to as the Queen. She's pretty awesome in a bitchy badass sort of way. She kind of acts as the antagonist, but I use that term loosely since shes not really "evil" per se, more just as one of the main obstacles to overcome. She can be a ****** though, the sort of character who if someone below her skill level were to ask her to play a game with them, she would tell them something along the lines of "I'm not good enough to play with you yet, I need to practice and improve more" in the least humble way possible.
(P.S. Shes holding a card with a love poem on it, pretty sure most people are going to mistake it for a cellphone or something
)
And yeah, fingers crossed on ANR. That and Mekaku city actors by shaft are my 2 most anticipated ones coming up.
