That's exactly it for me. Before you and I got into our sit down and squeal over it together mindset, I was vaguely making noises about loving Rebellion to one of my friends. He asked me to summarize the series (thankfully did so without spoilers) and then asked if I felt men could get the same feelings about the show as I did with being female. Gen just writes things in a way that make it purely human instead of figuring that only one gender could get something out of the series. Without jumping into spoilers and such before the re-watch happens, so many of the things that paved the way for the witches are all emotions or outlooks that anyone could fall under and I pretty much summed up the idea that a key to being able to enjoy the series (amazing visuals and my usual fawning over Yuki's music aside) is empathy.

I think any well executed story is worth viewing regardless of who it's apparently aimed at. That said I do think there is a certain appeal to viewing this series as a guy. I probably can't relate to all aspects of the girls quite as well as you (although I do consider myself a bit more emotional then the typical male so in some ways I can). But I can really appreciate the contrast between something that comes off as being girly between just how dark the situation is.
Fate/Zero which is another of Gen Urobuchi's works is one that is almost just as good in terms of storytelling quality, and is probably more along the lines of what a typical male would enjoy. The only reason PMMM is better (Imo, not objectively) is because of how well Gen's messed up mindset contrasted with the genre to create something I felt was rather unique in storytelling.
I mean theres a certain kind of shock value in walking into what you think is a "girly show" and getting this:

PMMM is my first full-on introduction to Gen's work but I did read a little bit of the Fate/Stay VN a few years back (never finished it though, got distracted by other things) and then in my seemingly constant search for VNs with great stories, stumbled upon Saya no Uta. I haven't read it myself but I watched a chunk of an LP and just kind of sat there going 'This is so bizarre yet absolutely fascinating. o_o'
While the series in general is a massive deconstruction, I adore the fact that TRS takes it up to ridiculous levels. It really does sit finely on your previously mentioned LOVE or HATE columns and I guess I find it incredibly amusing that it's difficult to find people that just thought it was 'okay'. ![]()

The AoT dub seems fine so far, the Japanese version is great too.
But you all have to know, both can't ever beat the voices I hear in my head
when I read the manga. Because all the characters have my voice. And my voice is the best version.

Fate/stay was not done by Gen Urobuchi, and well I didn't mind Fate/stay (it was so-so) its nowhere near the level of Fate/Zero. So far I have seen PMMM, Fate/Zero and half of Psycho Pass (watching it slowly with a friend atm) by Gen, and they are all rather unique. I really like Gen's storytelling style as he likes to challenge the viewer to look at common storytelling tropes from a different light. He does have a rather twisted mindset in some ways though, but that's sort of what I like about him.
I will find it incredibly amusing when someone come's in here and described TRS as being average..

Isi: Oh that's good to know that I had my wires crossed about Stay then! It was amusing when I tried to think back to it because I have seen Zero get a lot of praise but my brain kept going 'Well... I'd like to try it but I had a really hard time staying interested in Fate/Stay, so I don't know...' Misinformation on my part can let me relax a bit more then and give it a shot at some point! Psycho Pass is definitely in my to watch list not only for his involvement but also my adoration for cyberpunk made me roll around like an idiot when I first read of its existence. ![]()

Best thing about in-head reading. Your voice is always the best voice xD

If it makes you feel better, I AM planning on watching JUST the movies one day for a marathon. Is that a good idea?

Psycho Pass has one of the most visually appealing cyberpunk worlds I've seen. I hate to say it but so far thats the best part of the series.

Absolutely.
Keep in mind I'm the most biased person you could possibly be asking though.

Bro, I love PMMM as well. That damned intro song was in my head for freaking ages xD
Not as much as you though, but I do love it ![]()
So are the three movies like, what? Retellings of the series + the sequel rebellion?

Aye.
The first 2 movies retell the TV series, and then the third is TRS.

Cool!
One last question.
I wanna watch the two movies because I haven't really watched them. But are they good enough to skip the series? Or should I go series + rebellion?
Or it doesn't really matter either way? I wanna get a PMMM marathon going after Rebellion, so I wanna do it right ;-)

Just watch the three movies and you will be good. I think when someone initially sits down to watch the series the TV series is the best way to go, but once you've already seen it, you should just use the movies to re-view the series.

Alright, will do. And good thing too, I think I can binge without having to get off my ass 12 times to switch episodes #lazyasfuaark.

Yeah, anytime I sit down to read a western comic I have to stop and tell myself to read left to right. I've being more naturally use to the manga viewing style more then western style for quite a while now.

Watching The Tatami Galaxy. Love the premise, love the (albeit bizarre) art style and dat ending theme. Took me a minute to get used to the rapid-fire exposition, though.

@Isis, I know that feel :-) 'specially when I read TWD or the Dunk and Egg graphic novels.
@House, can you STOP (please continue) with the most cutest KLK photos ever! ><
P.S Speaking of PMMM. Is Madoka's family explored more in the movies? I find it an awesome example of post modernity the wife being the breadwinner and all.

Sim: As Isi said earlier, the first two movies (The Beginning Story and the Eternal Story respectively) are basically the series with some scenes cut or altered a bit. That being said, Madoka's family does get some screen-time in them, mostly going to her mother Junko to serve as a sort of guiding light for Madoka while she tries to work her way through all that happens in the time frame of the series. Saying that, there's a line of dialogue she gives in episode six (so it'll fall in the first movie) that I'm most definitely going to highlight when I get to my eventual re-watch speech after tonight. It's something that after I thought about it for a while, made me adore Rebellion even more (as if I need any more reason to love it though, right?
). The context behind it of course will be different but it's definitely going to be brought up.
Basically it'll be a difference of two hours if you decide to go the movie trilogy route vs the series + Rebellion. That's why I'm doing the former tonight because as much as I don't mind devoting eight hours to the whole thing, I've watched some of the episodes repeatedly that I think it makes up the difference if I just spend six. ![]()
