Hi all, I'm back with my impressions on Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion.  Spoilers for both the show and movie below!

NO SERIOUSLY, READ AT YOU OWN RISK

 

So I'll start off by saying that this series has taken me by surprise like no other show has before, but again, I was a latecomer who was lucky enough to see the whole series and movie back to back, unspoiled, in about 3 days.  So take that for what you will.

 

I didn't know where the story could go after the series.  Madoka was a god, the universe was rewritten, and Homura was the only one who remembered everything that happened.  Yet suddenly we have a team of all 5 girls fighting something called Nightmares and singing about cake.  It was very clear something was wrong from the very beginning.

 

Then Homura starts the unravel the mystery that they are all actually in a witch's labyrinth.  I'll be honest, the first twist was pretty easy to see, but I think they intended to be so (the second one, not so much).  Homura was the only person who could create such a world, but still Sayaka's role wasn't completely clear.

 

I liked the whole idea that Kyubey was trying to undermine Madoka through science.  It made sense to me that they wouldn't just give up.  And then Homura turns into a witch, her ultimate sacrifice to save Madoka.  Pretty heartbreaking, until you realized Madoka and Sayaka and the other one (who's name escapes me) were there to save her, and they succeeded!  I was in awe.  Madoka finally remembered, and was finally going to keep her promise.  Happy smiles and tears all around.

 

And then Homura pulls the biggest and greatest dick move ever and it was amazing.  Didn't see it coming at all. Not even a little.  The music just suddenly changes and she does that creepy smile and nothing was ever going to be the same again.  I got chills.

 

Let me tell you why I think Akuma Homura worked so well.  During the show, Homura was forced to relive that month countless times as she tried time and time again to save Madoka, failing every single time.  It was clearly to the point of obsession.  But then, in the final timeline Madoka does the ultimate selfless sacrifice to save all the other magical girls, erasing herself from history, leaving only Homura with memory of her and what happened.  A touching gift to her best friend right? It is, until you realize now Homura has to live the rest of her life remebering how she failed to save the only thing she cared about, having to burden it all herself as no one else could could ever know.  With only a life of despair to look forward to, it is no doubt turned into a yandere demon god. The post credit scene was also brilliant in how open to interpretation it leaves Homura's fate, and state of mind.  In retrospect, this was the only logical conclusion for Homura's arc, and once again I must commend creators for sticking to their guns.  I loved it.

 

Regarding the ending, Homura trapping Madoka and forcing everyone to live a normal life because it is what "she" believes they want (even though clearly Madoka doesn't) is great.  The perfect selfish wish to Madoka's selfless one.

 

As an aside, the Mami vs Homura battle was fun, but the point Homura tries to shoot herself, I'm pretty sure a said "No!" out loud.  I seriously thought it was over for her.

 

Spoiler free final thoughts: PMMM, both the series and the movie, is such a great deconstruction of the genre.  Its appeal comes from how it approaches the philosophical and psychological aspect of putting real people in a magic setting.  It is uncompromising, and unforgiving.  Its a must watch in my opinion, as very few stories, anime or otherwise, do what this show does so well.

 

This was literally the last show I ever expected to become a fan of, but because of that, it was so much more rewarding.

 

Rating: 10/10

 

I also finished Beyond the Boundary, but I'll leave my impressions of that for another day.

 

EDIT: As there seems to have been plenty of discussion about ratings and giving "perfect scores" I'll explain my rating.  For me a 10/10 is simply my highest commendation, it doesn't necessarily mean perfection.  Below are some examples of other things I'd give 10/10

Glad you enjoyed it. Seems like you had the same reaction as me originally. It really helps that you didn't spoil it before watching it.
