I definitely get your obsession with L as well, he is a pretty awesomely sexy mofo too (and that is why I shun the second half of Death Note)
I will say that the second half of DN *does* have some good points, but it took a really long time for me to put in the effort of getting to it (whereas the first part I breezed through cause it was amazing). It never quite gets as close to how fantastic the standoffs in the first chunk were but there was at least one point I can think of that still got a 'Holy **** o_o' reaction.

As for the second half of death note...
Yeah, it isn't anywhere near (not a pun) as good as the first. Near just seems to guess at things based on nothing, however, it was nice to see another eccentric master-mind and it's just bad in comparison to the super-duper fantastic first half. On its own it's all right. But I'm saying this because it doesn't bother me so much, and I'm one of the few people in the Galaxy that actually likes Near.

Watching Light crumble was one of the best (and most cathartic) scenes in DN... or all anime.
His downfall was brilliant.
It's about... Not, a lot.
It's kind of hard to explain - It's some type of deconstruction of the harem genera (like Madoka is a deconstruction of the Magic Girl, but uh, less extreme), it's a comedic and has semi-slice of life-esque stories.
It's a very visual show that at the same time relies heavily on dialog - Essentially it's about a former vampire that's still sort of a vampire that finds these bunch of girls with weird issues, most notably Senjougahara Hitagi (the girl in the gif I posted in the previous page), who basically bullies him into being her boyfriend, and Hanekawa Tsubasa, the first one having, uh, crab problems (lol) and the second one cat issues.
Like I said it's pretty hard to explain without spoilers, so you'll have to look for yourself - Just know, there's a lot of dialog and visual aids that are needed to understand everything better (So you always have to pay attention - It's extremely easy to get lost if you miss just one piece of dialog), and sometimes there's a lot of fanservice, with incest to boot - But it's a very interesting and charming show. One of my favorites.
And Hitagi is one of my favorite characters.
Edit - Oh yea, and by the way, like I suggested before - It's made by Shaft, the same people who made Madoka.
