Meh...DBZ is trashy as far as I'm concerned.

And really geth? Complaining about "poeple not acting like that in real life". That happens in half the managa/anime, with characters spouting nonsesne that no sane person would ever do.

That said, some of my favorites:

Vision of Escaflowne (sorta-fantasy with mecha)
Cowboy Beebeop
Legend of Galatic Heroes
Great Teacher Onizuka
Trigun
Planetes (realistic, real hard sci-fi)
Jin-Roh
Monster
Luie the Rune Soldier
Excel Saga
Macross (the first one)
Azumanga Daioh
Full Metal Panic
Saint Seiya

ANY Gundam Shows, Soul Eater, and Naruto are my top three right now.

Gundam, so old yet so classic.

Yeah. Even that one. It's so cliche, but that's what makes it great.

Escaflowne is divine.

Everything that Yoko Kanno has touched is basically the creme de la creme of anime as far as I'm concerned.

Hm..Cowboy Beebop and VoE are amazing...but Aquarion? Not quite seeing it.
Music is amazing as always tough. It's Yoko Kanno after all.

On TV Tropes Pantheon she's the Godess of Music.

Well, others are also questionable (and Aquarion is probably the only one that I haven't seen), but you get my point.

And I gather that when I do see Aquarion, it'll be highly rated by me because of the music alone.

I loved, for instance, Earth Girl, though the story-line didn't make much sense in its cheesy Avatar-like overall (I don't want anime to make sense anyhow). It was all in all very original and tasteful though...

But as to your comment about Dragon Ball, well, as far as I've always known, DBZ is not something for me, even remotely, but this belief has been put to test by me watching the original series (without the Z), in Japanese. I do dare you to watch at least 60 episodes of the original series, without any preconception, subbed of course, and then say something about the series - whatever it will be, it will certainly be much more adequate than any comment without this.

I, for now on can only fringe at comments about DBZ, no matter if from a fan or offender, who hasn't seen the original, and thus is mistaken about the nature of it. These guys actually take it seriously - more often than not - and that's just very false already.

That said, I've reached ep 61 myself, and the last one I saw really resonated with me. It was the ones when assassin White white peach (/peach bosom) entered.
Sh#t got serious.

I'm not follwoing those animes.

I've seen plenty of DBZ, One Piece and soem other shonen episodes, but I never really got into it.
It's colorfull and full of crazy ideas and designs. Good for kids.

My taste lies more with the anime that tries to make some sense.
Exception for comedic anime exist (like Excel Saga)

As I said, it is comedic. Just watch the original. (not Dragon Ball Z, but the prequel - Dragon Ball... only then will you understand and be with a worthy opinion)... I dare you to say it is all you thought it to be after it.

PS, I dislike all shonen anime with vigor (except Death Note and the likes - the original DB being not shonen but rather a gag anime, i.e. comedic stuff).

You've seen all of Pokemon and you dind't like it? o.O
Why did you watch it then? I for one skipped it entirely - I can't stand a single episode. But I love anime. (also haven't seen sailor moon, and doubtful if I ever will).

Because i was 12 and everyone in my school loved it, and they all played pokemon gameboys games (or similar mini consoles). And i hated it all - mewtwooooooo - strongest pokemon, then those 4 primal pokemons (something like Phoenix was one of them), Onyx, pikachu, charizard(that was my favored pokemon actually - i love dragons), Ash that guy was fail and that girl that was constantly following him, i forget her name - she was like every girl in our base school, i hated her too. But then, i am a Dark Lord so i had to hate a lot.

And yeah, i forget to mention Dragonball Z too, that was too very popular back then - the main guy was called Goku i think and he had that wired hairstyle with hairs standing up and shoting bolts of energy from his hands. Was like Mortal Kombat for kids.

Well in the case of DBZ, I don't blame you. That was one of the worst anime to come out of japan. 50 episodes of charging up followed by another 50 of trash talk. And the lore, the settings and characters were so ridiculous I just could not take it seriously.

There was never 50 episodes of charging up or trash talk and the point is to not take it seriously, it's a gag manga/anime.

If eroeru can take the time to find out what Dragon Ball really is, you should too.

I watched it on monring TV when I was a kid and although I liked to make fun of it. I couldn't take all the action sequences seriously. And the visual style was not to my taste either. As far as fighting anime is concerned Naruto is 10x better IMO.

It is NOT SERIOUS. At least by its beginning, and nature.

As I said multiple times, watch the original. It is matters absolutely zero that you've seen DBZ (moreso if in dub). You don't know anything relevant to say about the franchise if you've not taken a look into the original old series. I dare anyone to try those and say it's even almost the exact thing you expected it to be...

My dislike for it goes beyond the humour, hated the character design, the settings and the whole backstory nonsense about the Sayan race. Possilby one of the worst looking anime I've ever seen too. As far as Journey to the West is concerned, the anime Sayuki is still number 1 in my book.

I'm getting a bit too passionate for a show that I don't watch here :D

But really, my point is that do you say this based on DBZ or DB? If the former, I'd love to hear your opinion about the latter (the original series). It says a lot about what was in the real nature of the creation (and what is central, as a beginning, to the franchise), and the love for it in Japan.

And it most possibly won't be near anything what you'd expect...

The talk about Dragon Ball is painfully unknowing if you haven't even seen the original series, the point where it began, yet for some reason the intriguing start of it is what all unknowing-fans/opposers seem to ignore.

I think that DBZ is the series that has created worst misconception in anime history. It kinda annoys me if people ignore to try looking into this fact (it is one until someone refutes it - yet I've heard no-one actually wanting to see it, they try to refute it without firsthand evidence, or with "ignorant" strawman - and I claim that most if not all who do see the original, will change their opinion about the franchise drastically)... Oh, and half of the blame goes to the people who dubbed the series (I know firsthand only about the original DB though). Half the blame goes for fans who watch it for the "wrong" reasons (they are simply ignorant of the origins). :P

Well I've always been a big fan of fighting shows and this one has the largest variety of characters with different personalities and abilities. The first 3 seasons were amazing and had an amazing plot twist. The fillers are good too but kind of out of context sometimes. The main plot is pretty good but drags on a little too long and they pulled the some plot point as the 2nd season in the 6th later which was kind of lame but the fights are amazing. And main characters really need to die off more in this show to make an emotional moment that actually impacts the main character. But yeah if you're looking for a good fighting anime Bleach is the best one since DBZ or Yu Yu Hakusho

Shounen-wise at the moment, I'd say Hunter x Hunter and One Piece are the best current-running manga(Fullmetal Alchemist doesn't count since it's no longer running....but hey. Read it.).

One Piece does a very good job at combining the adventure and humor elements in the manga while retaining a very big and consistent world. There are also parts looking back where it's very obvious the author knows how to plan things well in advance. It also does very well at portraying parallel horrible events from slavery, corruption, and racism. Downsides are due to the lack of death there really aren't too many suspenseful moments. ....Also, it should be said for everyone of these, but for One Piece especially, you need to read the manga since the anime has horrible pacing.

Hunter x Hunter easily has the best mind games for shounen at the moment, and possibly the most complex battle system of any manga. Hunter x Hunter's focuses are much more philosophical at delving into the nature of different people while also having the characters go through very difficult moments that can emotionally crush them(and literally sometimes.) The exact opposite of One Piece, Hunter x Hunter has death being very prevalent in the series with never knowing exactly when or who could possibly end up dying. Even the protagonists have moments where, while you know they won't die, if they'll get out of the arc without being completely crushed either emotionally or have lasting injuries. Downsides is....well, the author goes on tons of breaks, so don't be surprised if you start reading only to have to wait 8 months for a new chapter.  Edit: Ah.  Also has the same author as Yu Yu Hakusho since that was stated just above me.

I would also recommend Shingeki No Kyojin which has the last bit of humanity struggling to deal with a race of giants that only continue to get closer and closer to making them come to extinction. This one's particularly brutal as far as nobody being safe in it goes.

That is certainly true, and I couldn't manage to look through any single episode of it (probably/largely because of this).

Will try the manga in the indefinite future.

Aah, It's understandable then.

I don't know what it was that hooked me on it all of a sudden, but I think it's the humor, and moments full of impact starting at approx ep 60, these finally getting through to me.

Death Note is shonen.

Shonen can be anything from battle to gag to romance and so on and any mix of them.

As for the art of Dragon Ball being basic and oversimplified again it's a gag series and it's a weekly so....

And the Saiya-jin race is just a joke off of Superman, Toriyama loves to make fun of Superman.=]

Also Naruto and Bleach are in no way better fighting series than Dragon Ball.

Oh and HiroVoid is right about everything in his post.

Maybe in your opinion but I think Naruto at least has something pretty good going for it,certainly found it more accessible than DB and One Piece. Just wih it wasn't so stretched out and fillers are just pointless.
