[Giga Drill BREAKER]

Just recently saw Jojo for the first time, I always thought it looked dumb, but its actually awesome, I haven't liked an anime like this since Gurren Lagann.

If we're talking in total? I'm probably somewhere around 50+ I'd say counting movies and such. I have a bad habit of buying series and then getting distracted by something else (It's okay Wolf's Rain, I promise I'll watch you someday), or starting series with friends and then not remembering to look into the rest of it (as the case with Darker than Black. Watched the first DVD waaaay back with a friend and remember liking it but never followed up with the rest).

 

Because I did mention I'd do a little write up on it anyway, I might as well take the time to ramble a little on my rewatch of Kaiba. It's a series that's very dear to my heart but at the same time it's one that I know is a difficult to sell to folks. There won't be spoilers under the cut, I'm just going to leave it there for space's sake.

I admit I have a little game where I dare folks to make it through the third and forth episodes without crying. In a series that revolves around memories, the third episode especially is one that gets most people. It's billed as a romance series but it's most certainly not of the fluffy sort. The music and cast are huge selling points for me and I stumbled on the series back in 2010 before I was introduced to a handful of the VAs that make the cast great. I don't want to say too much about the plot but to briefly summarize the way the world works: Bodies have become a bit of a commodity. It's a world where a person's memories can be uploaded to a chip and transferred into a new body. Memories can be rewritten, bad ones removed and good ones put in. It's basically a form of immortality as long as another body is available. Sounds not too terrible, yeah? This is a luxury the rich have, the poor of the world are often pushed to sell their physical forms to make money for their family to survive, leaving only a memory chip and the hopes of acquiring a new body later to be some form of solace.

 

For all my gushing, why is it a hard sell? The art style is a big one. I personally adore it and feel that it fits the series perfectly but in saying it calls back to art styles of the 70s should make it fairly clear why some folks might be turned off by it. There's also the case that people are fairly divided whether or not the series stays strong through its 12 episode run. I personally enjoy the whole thing but I can see where people would have a problem after 7 where it starts to shift from being a planet hopping adventure of soul crushing looks into the sense of self and peoples' guarded memories and deals more with inter-personal relations of the main cast. It's a niche title for sure, with the series never being licensed we only have fansubs to fall back on. There's a little issue there in that the one group that has fansubbed it decided to change a few names halfway through, which can make things a little confusing.  It's also a rather dark series. I got pretty used to people saying over the years that nothing 'good' happens in it. I personally prefer to call it more bittersweet than anything. Sort of functioning on a very grey morality, you can ponder the both sides of the 'conflict' and understand for the most part why they act as they do.

 

Really at the end of the day it's one that I do wish more people knew about and appreciated but at the same time, I can understand why the series might run folks away.

You're going to pass me. A lot of those are ones I watched when I was younger. Since I started back up I've watched about 40 I think. I'll make up a proper list later an figure it out exactly.

I should figure out my top 10 as well.. Number 1 should be pretty simple to figure out

Dio... well, it's obvious. But Speedwagon is just hilarious by how freaked out he is by everything and how loyal he is to JoJo xD

Well I'm only at episode 11 so I haven't really grown attached to anyone yet but I'm finding Joseph quite amusing, hes always posing while talking. I suppose they all do that but he seems to do it more.


On what the others are talking about.

my anime count must be quite high, up near 200 I'd imagine, but I rarely watch anime now though, because I'm not a fan of harem or magical girl anime, and thats all most anime is now.

On another note am I the only one who hates stalled and cancelled anime, I was recently reading Soul Eater is getting an off shoot anime, wtf? why don't they finish the series they already have?

The manga ending for Soul Eater was meh. So meh if they ever do give it a new show.

Thank you for being willing to give it a shot, Puddi! Don't get me wrong, I can understand the issues people have with the latter half of the series but for me it's a very worthwhile experience. The series probably could have worked even better with a longer run-time, but at the same time it potentially could have slipped into dragging its feet as well. One of those instances where the 12 episode format worked to its advantage, at least in my mind.

 

The creator has done a handful of other works, I'm probably going to look into Mind Game at some point since it does sound intriguing as well. I watched Cat Soup years ago but I don't actually remember *any* of it besides that it turned out to be a lot darker than the animation style would suggest, so maybe I'll rewatch it again once I've chipped away at series I've never seen before.

They would have to do the FMA: Brotherhood treatment to finish it, wouldn't they? The anime was given its own ending; in the manga they don't

Well it only really deviates in the last 2 or 3 episodes, they could do what Hayate the Combat Butler did, just carry on like they never changed the story, and everyone just excepted it.

tbh I was just using Soul Eater as an example there are alot of stalled animes that need to be finished.

A girly anime. Positive side:

At least the female characters look they're older than 15.

 

Still, Gintama has the best characters. Bunch of loser male characters and few angry female characters!

(which I gotta say was a bit of a disappointment on the romance side, which sucks cos that's what it was. It was THERE but I really didn't *feel* it. Liked it well enough though.)

 

 

I feel the same, regarding romance. Either do it right or just don't do it at all. Because badly written romance can ruin it so badly. *looks at the Kamina/Yoko romance*
