I just got back from going out to lunch, and I made a few extra stops.

Ended up getting "Death Note: Black Edition" Volumes 1 and 2. (Which is actually Volumes 1-4 because of the Black Edition.) I also bought "Bakuman" Volumes 1 and 2.

And if anyone cares, I had pizza, and it was amazing.

Talking about stuff like this makes me wonder if I should try to do manga reviews in this thread. I have never really wrote a review before, and this thread could help me get good at writing them. What do you think?

Go for it.

Ditto.

As for the comment that Toriko's merits are its sillyness - that gave a bit of perspective back to me.

Actually, I would be really glad to read such reviews. And I remember we went over it god knows when. Maybe about 20 pages back? So I do think now's the prime time for you to write some. ;)

Okay thanks guys, I will do it.

I guess I should start with something simple, the first saga of One Piece maybe? That would work, I have been rereading my volumes as of late. Also been rereading my Hunter x Hunter volumes so that might come next.

As much as I love Nausicaä, Berserk and some Osamu Tezuka and Go Nagai manga, those would take a very long time to write about. Besides just reviewing the manga themselves, I am also going to get into the history, trivia and a bit of analysing. It will take some time(days maybe? sooner if I can) but you will know when the review is done, because it's going to be a long post from me.B)

And now getting off that topic. In the post that this post is a reply to, eroeru you seem to cool down on Toriko but the next post where you talk about it... You are over-thinking the silly manga where the whole world's economy is based on food again.:P

Seriously if the morals of Toriko were bad, really bad I would be all over it's case with a ton of anger. Like say Hetalia, a "cute' gag series(that's not funny) that Japan had no right to make.:?

@Logan Hope you like Bakuman, I think it will help you learn a thing or two about manga, and what goes into making manga.

Also pizza is indeed amazing.

I've read Volume 1 of Bakuman already, actually. I just bought it because I hate having incomplete collections.

And yes, I do enjoy it very much so. Particularly the art. I've seen some screenshots from the anime and I'm kinda disappointed. It doesn't look nearly as well-drawn as the manga is.

Well a manga about manga should only be a manga no?

I wouldn't say that. That's like saying a movie about a writer should only be a book. And if it's anywhere near as good as Death Note, it's probably a good anime anyway.

Yeah but is the movie based on a book? Is the said book a love letter to what goes into making books? Because Bakuman is just one big love letter to manga, right down to getting into manga history. It just would not be the same thing as anything other than a manga, hell I know I have seen the anime.

And the series is better than Death Note, because Death Note became kind of sucky after L dies. Oh and Death Note was better as a manga anyway.

@Logan. That's exactly why the movie is better.

@geth. I believe the moive is based on the manga but it altered the way certain events played out. Near and Mallow aren't in it because L never dies.

I dunno, but I'm sure it's been done. I don't really think Bakuman should've stayed just a manga. Anime's generally easier for most people to get into nowadays. A good anime can give exposure to the manga. If someone likes the show, they're more likely to pick up the books.

I bought the Death Note manga because I liked the show.

A lot of anime don't do the Manga justice because of the way they portray certain characters or events. I love the Naruto manga but I can't stand the anime and the clusterfuk of filler episodes.

A lot of anime leaves out little things because then you don't know the whole story. It makes people want to know more. So they buy the manga. It's pretty clever actually.

True, the anime shows can be used as big budget(lol no) commercials for the superior manga series.

But a manga still has to become somewhat popular to get an anime, as you will find out from Bakuman that can be really hard.

The reason the anime fans do not get the whole story, is because more than likely the anime came out as the manga was still ongoing. So really it's just the anime people being dumb because they can't wait for a manga to end first or for the manga to at least be a few years ahead.

If it's not that reason, the anime studios must be really dumb to mess up a manga.

I'm getting into manga writing myself actually. I've already researched a lot of this stuff on my own. That was one of the main reasons I was interested in Bakuman in the first place.

But it's the same with any form of writing really. Not just manga. Being a writer is an unforgiving life sometimes.

I know it's not always the case, but they do do that sometimes from a business standpoint. It's a good way to get people interested.

When I watched Scott Pilgrim, I ended up looking for the books. After I heard that the books ended totally different, it made me want to read them even more, just to see what Bryan Lee O'Malley wrote.

Oh being a manga writer/artist is a very hard job to do(it can even kill you), more so if it's at Jump it's really about luck. Like it really was lucky that Hiroshi Gamō came back as Tsugumi Ohba and got a great artist like Takeshi Obata to help out on the art.

And even then, look what they have to live up to? Tezuka, Oda and some others already have put more hard work into their manga than any other mangaka could ever do. There is a lot of pressure for these guys to get one chapter out for the deadline.

You are right "being a writer is an unforgiving life sometimes", but being a mangaka is an almost suicidal line of work if you can't hit big or worse you do hit big.:?

Ha, reminded me of Mashiro's uncle when you said that.

Lol, I appreciate the concern, but it's something I want to go for. It wouldn't be much of a goal if it wasn't near-impossible. That's what I think anyway.

That's what I was going for, or should I say Bakuman was going for? Since the uncle was Hiroshi Gamō before Death Note happened. Also the man who started manga did in fact work himself to death.

Oh it's not near-impossible for you, it is impossible for you, more so if you want your manga to be popular. There really is almost no non-Japanese mangaka. I had a friend from Vietnam who try the same thing as you did, but he could also draw, really well in fact... But everywhere he would go to, they said his art looked more like Manhua so he never got a job in Japan.

Just giving advice.

Not asking for advice. I'm not going to keep myself from doing something I want to do because it's difficult. Just like how I'm not going to do something I hate because it's easy.

If I work myself to death, so be it. If nothing ever happens for me then so what? Doesn't mean I'm not going to try.

Saying that something like being a mangaka is impossible and choosing to never attempt it because of that is a pathetic way to go through life. I'd rather be dead than live like that.

No matter how hard the goal, if you find yourself thinking about it alot... then stay persistent in achieving that goal.

My brother told me that.

Not to be rude, but talk is cheep.

When there are better people(and the always are) than you at this line of work, who could not make it. Your chances are then very low, not saying don't try but I hate to see people work themselves to death. I mean I get why Dr. Osamu Tezuka did it, he loved making  his art more than his own life, he could of stopped anytime he wanted to. He sure as hell had the cash and he knew he had stomach cancer, he was a doctor after all. But like I said he put his art over his life because he, well was the "father of manga" and I can understand that. However no one else should go that far, in my view.

Say what you want about One Piece, but the mangaka does work himself very hard and I hope nothing horrible will become him, since he has a wife and two young children. I am someone who wants him to go on more breaks so he can be healthy. But I know how Jump is and just how popular the series is, so no breaks. Again hope nothing bad happens to him.

So to be a little less over the top, try writing normal books first or better write comics from the west first, since that could get you name out there at least. And that would help you better to get into manga, I think one American guy did something like that once.
