So naturally picked up Roberta's Blood Trail after Second Barrage and so far only seen the first episode but it's been fantastic and it even managed to make me cringe like i've not done in ages. One scene was all it took and chessus was it.. painful

Just poking my head in to say that I'm not ignoring both yours or Pudi's comments regarding the series, Sim. I just haven't felt super talkative the last few days cause of stress burnout. :S I do want to thank you both for checking it out though and promise this weekend that I'll mumble at you. <3

Finished it. Alright...

The entire anime, aside from themes, characterisation and awesome oldie art style is about links.

Links you make

Links they make

Links between setting and themes

Links between themes and narrative

It's all about them damn links xD

First of I'd recommend this to one guy especially, Mr,Chris, for its very unique way of story telling. In many ways, it reminds me of a video game. The first half is there to build the setting, however, the characters are always connected. Bits and pieces here and there connect towards the second half which would be the game's climax, where the narrative becomes more linear in order to wrap up the story.

And by game. I mean Planescape: Torment.

I can't give any examples without spoiling anything really. The main character's journeys throughout the world not only inform him but us as well. This is why the first half is more of an episodic thing than the second.

The characters in it are great with varying depth to them. Popo especially comes of as tragic (though there is just one moment that felt so contrived it was almost pitiful.) -

Spoiler

Aside from the thematic strength of the story; it's also brilliant with links. It seriously does a f*cking Dickens on you and connects thing from episode one to two. If you're not familiar with Dickens, then let's say When they Cry for an anime comparison xD

Now for the ending...

I'm not sure what to make of it. Was it confusing? A little. Not the ending, but the events that led to it. It all kinda happens in the second half. But that's the great thing about it. As I mentioned above, it's all about links - the story will not spoonfeed you everything.

Also...

Spoiler

Sorry for the crappy attempt at analysis. As I said when Chris was on about Ouran. My brain is no functioning as it should be. Well... the side that would be used for this is being reserved for Macbeth, Frankenstein and that useless piece of sh*t Chaucer and his 'three rioters.' Along with Durkheim, his boyfriend Marx and bunch useless Right Realists.

Despite my earlier comments, I wanna have lots of discussions with you about Kaiba ;-) xD

You too, Isi! Of course, they won't compete with your PMMM stuff, but I'd like to join it hehee.

I'll read through the spoilers and respond as soon as I finish it myself.

Still it sounds like you enjoyed it overall?

P.S. Some hardcore discussions sound fun, and be careful, Ani is just as crazy (maybe even moreso) as I am :D

See I just read an awesome review (this is for those who read it) and normally this stuff would come to me so easily, but because of those goddamned useless-

NO! I DON'T THINK CRIME IS A WAY OF SELF EXPRESSION YOU GUDDAM POSTMODERDINISTS

As I was saying...

Here's the end conclusion for the episode. And yes, all of it was so damned obvious ><

I need to bow my head in shame. So I refute my comment about the end's 'antagonist' and will allow for each of you to use gifs and make fun of my incompetence.

I suspect Geth and House will have the most fun in doing so.

Here's the end review conclusion thingy. A good (and short) read.

Oh I loved it. I'll definitely be watching this again once my brain is using its power for important things like remembering the exact URL to that hentai site last year.

hehe pretty cool amv

Soul Eater's a surprisingly high-quality anime. It's one of the rare anime that does shounen right, and has a great animation style that packs thematic consistency into everything. I don't know what the proper term is, but it packs symbols and symmetry into everything, and stands high as a result.

Not terribly a fan of how the anime ended, but it's very enjoyable and bounds between the comical and surprisingly dark-crazy.

Yeah the ending was kinda meh, but the rest of it was pretty great. And dark-crazy is an understatement xD

Okay so I watched an episode of Jojo and I just had to see how they handled the ending in Bakuman (the anime that is.)

I teared up.

It was that much better, and all they had to do was add a few extra scenes.

"I MAY BE EXAGGERATING, BUT JOJO SAVED THE WORLD!" xD - Speedwagon just makes me laugh with anything he says xD

So I saw the first episode of Black Lagoon, is it wrong that I laughed a little at the theme song? The music itself is pretty badass, but the lyrics are kind of, um... yeah.

I sped through it a bit, and the best parts tend to be Revy and her action scenes. The storyline didn't do a great deal for me, but to each their own.

I actually like the ending of the anime from Soul Eater better than the manga. Friendship power gives me diarrhea. This is why I don't read Shounen manga. I make an exception with Soul Eater since it features a female protagonist. Most of the time, females are there for fan service or just participate in minor matches then just lose to the big bad, waiting to be rescued.

I watched Black Lagoon a year ago -- It's safe to say that what drew me to it was the promise of a female protagonist for once, lo and behold, there aren't many of those except for the ones in High School dramas, or ones that end up being crying mimsy's that need a male character to rescue them. I was let down because I didn't think too much of the story and Revy is what you'd call a bonifide stereotypical action girl, switch out her gender and it would change bugger all --  I suppose that works for this particular anime though, being a celebration of action clichés with a particular brand of ironic retro camp. It just didn't work out for me evidently. The character of Roberta made me flinch because the show wanted to sell her off as a Hispanic waitress woman, despite the fact that she's about as hispanic as Barack Obama. I just hate it when anime wants to portray foreign nationalities but end up slipping off a cliff in the process.

I like to think that my experience with Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, which I watched before Lagoon, had upped my standards for female characters, portrayal of foreign nationalities, and story. I don't think there's any other anime that has managed to do female characters as well as Brotherhood yet. Part of the reason why I haven't watched a lot of anime, with few exceptions like Ergo Proxy, that manages to satisfy me enough anyway.

I do fail to see though in how special Brotherhood is regarding female characters. Sure, Riza, Olivia and Wenry are great, but not THAT great.

Because Brotherhood understands that making 'strong' female characters does not mean making them powerhouses that can roundhouse kick you into orbit. It's not a necessity. The female characters of Fullmetal Alchemist are eclectic and well-rounded. Some are certainly strong, but it by no means defines them as people. They are allowed to show weakness; to be human. At no point is it ever suggested that femininity makes you less than in anyway. Winry, while not being a fighter, she's not a burden on Edward or Al, in fact she's a necessity to his fight against the Homunculus -- her skill in mechanics actually make Edward & Al dependent upon her. Lest we forget, she's also not clinging to Ed either, she has her own hopes and dreams she wants to fulfill but she nevertheless wants to keep supporting him from afar. That's a gratifying thing to behold if you ask me. They should be allowed to show weakness, be dull, be housewives; they should be allowed to be human. Also relevant to this discussion is something Natlie Portman said recently about stories about women in Hollywood – “The fallacy in Hollywood is that if you’re making a ‘feminist’ story, the woman kicks ass and wins. That’s not feminist, that’s macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman can be feminist if it shows a real person that we can empathize with.” Although we’re talking about anime and not western media here, it too can often be guilty of the same thing, which is probably why Fullmetal Alchemist really resonated with me. The female characters aren’t interchangeable, ass-kicking pairs of ****** vying for the attention of the male lead; they’re people.

It does make a difference when the author is female ^_^

But then you have Martin and other dudes who do just as well. Nevertheless, Hiromu Arakawa is a f*cking awesome mangaka.

I think that's a bit unfair conclusion to make. It's not like anime doesn't have female characters that aren't well rounded outside of Brotherhood, not to mention plenty of JRPGs (obvious notch towards my avi). Anyway, you're right, the author is female so I suppose that's a plus.

Hey I never said that! :D

Another good example would be Maka from Soul Eater. She's the protagonist but also the 'weakest' of the main cast (in terms of ability.) She has her flaws, inner conflict, even gives up to madness just to fight her enemy. But in the end it's her will that makes her strong.
