I've always liked anime because of character development and how some of the powers are unique and innovative

I'd say the same thing about Gurren Lagann, or Toradora, or any of my favorite anime, but I wouldn't say that for anime in general.

Good stories should always have good character development, and be unique and innovative. Whether it be Japanese, American, Canadian... Er... German? You get my point.

I just don't think that's a criteria for good anime. I think it's a criteria for good writing period.

Anime usually does have innovative powers. Also, there is the face expressions. I love the ****ing face expressions the characters show. Even though anime is animation... it tends to have more mature content than western animation

Japan has less mature anime shows nowadays. The pervy sh!t does not count. And the west has had stuff like Batman: Under the Red Hood  and all those other DC comic movies. So the west does have it's mature side of animation.

Well I would put the facial expressions in the same category as the art, which is what I said. I'll give you that other one though. Most anime tends to be quite a bit more mature than the shows we have around here.

As far as content though, anime can be exactly the same (or completely different) from western shows.

Stil though. Compared to most western animation, which is mostly comedy, jpan bpasts some pretty mature themes in a lot of their animated shows.

... I am well aware of what the west has
I was talking about mature content in general.

I would never go as far as to say I was good. When it was said earlier that there are people out there that are much more qualified than myself to write/draw manga, that was true.

I'm trying though. And I'll improve.

You should try making graphic novels or use the western comic style format, but with your own art style. A good way to improve your drawing skill is by rendering still lifes, self portraits, or draw your significant other in the nude, Titanic style. Also what college do you attend or are you a still highscool student? Depending on where you live, and if you can afford it, i can recommend an art school.

I've thought about it, but honestly, the reason I like anime/manga more than western stuff is entirely because of the art. I love the way it's drawn. Especially the eyes and hair. Those always stand out for whatever reason.

And I don't have a significant other, so me drawing anyone in the nude would be pretty uncomfortable. XD

I'm in highschool right now though.

You can keep the Japanese anime style but what i meant by the western format was the right to left book
structure. Drawing life models helps with creating well proportioned characters, and really helps to evolve your style. You should draw your friends or family until it looks life like, while saving all your drawings which can be used to create a portfolio, incase you are interested in pursuing a career in illustration.

Drawing life-like is totally different from drawing anime/manga-like drawings though.

Anime really isn't proportioned correctly. That's what gives it that unique style. Characters are usually tall and thin. The jaw is almost always pointed. The eyes are large and bright.

If real life looked like anime, I'd be a hell of a lot more attractive, lol.

I think she means like how in a lot of anime there are themes like murder, love (like a more mature take on it), and much more graphic violence than what we usually see in western animation.

Mature content

Moral ambiguity among characters
Anime generally isnt afraid to depict violence
The romances are more mature

Just things like that

Edit: Ghost ninja'd me a bit

There are tons of "life-like" or realistic styles of manga art.

@Ghost None of those things make something mature, the series themselves have to make those "themes" mature, and to bring up DC comics cartoon stuff again, Young Justice has all of those things and does them well.

Oh I agree. Just the other day I watched a DC animated movie where a young hero girl was killed by an army of Doomsday clones. I'm not saying these things aren't in western stuff, just that of what I've seen, most of the anime I've watched has portayed them in a manner much more suited for a more matue audience.

Well it's all how a series does those things. I think Hunter x Hunter can sometimes be a bit too mature for a Shonen Jump manga, but I don't think Death Note was too mature for a WSJ manga.

Actually most of it is propotioned despite the pointed chins and googly eyes. A good example of what i mean would be in Dragon Age Origins. Remember how long the dwarves arms were  in comparison to their height, which gave them this weird ape like look, compared to their DA2 incarnations?

It's up to you but some realism helps to accentuate a style like the images below.

He still doesn't look even remotely life-like. He looks like a manga character.

He looks of his time, you ever see Yojimbo? You wanted a realistic manga style and I gave you one.

I wouldn't say you gave me one though, because it doesn't look realistic.

We were comparing life-like drawings to manga-like drawings. What you showed me was obviously from a manga. It doesn't look life-like. I'd never believe that was a drawing of a real person. So it wasn't life-like.

That was what we were talking about.

It's still realistic, if you know anything about how to draw humans in a realistic style. But I get what you mean now, I think? So in a Mona Lisa style then?
