Drawing life-like is totally different from drawing anime/manga-like drawings though.

Anime really isn't proportioned correctly. That's what gives it that unique style. Characters are usually tall and thin. The jaw is almost always pointed. The eyes are large and bright.

If real life looked like anime, I'd be a hell of a lot more attractive, lol.

Actually most of it is propotioned despite the pointed chins and googly eyes. A good example of what i mean would be in Dragon Age Origins. Remember how long the dwarves arms were  in comparison to their height, which gave them this weird ape like look, compared to their DA2 incarnations?

It's up to you but some realism helps to accentuate a style like the images below.

I love that Gattzu pic.

Well, the Mona Lisa does look more realistic than manga... But I dunno. I never thought those paintings really looked like people. They're kinda creepy if you ask me.

But those paintings are the most "life-like" art you can find, since they are of real people.

Here.

These would have to be as close you could get to "life-like" in the Mona Lisa sense(but in no way as good) in manga form, both from the same manga artist.  Both based on real people.

Eiichiro Oda.

Why else would Snoop Dogg have Chopper's hat?

Those are much closer. The second one anyway. It doesn't really look like manga though.

Yeah on his off time I guess he likes to draw realistic pictures of Hip-hop stars. Manga artists are odd.=]

But that picture is a manga style, you can tell it was done with one of those special pens they use to draw manga.

Using the same kind of pen doesn't really make something manga. It just doesn't look like manga style.

I mean, you can go into my albums here on BSN. I've got a bunch of anime and manga in there. Not one of those pictures looks anything like that. And there's quite a few different artists in there.

The artist this picture belongs to is named Takeshi Inoue, who is also the author/artist of the manga Slam Dunk. The picture is a scene from his seinen manga Vagabond. Despite it's semi realistic look it's still considered a manga like Bakuman, One Piece or Naruto. Manga means comics, and not the style of large eyes, pointed chins, and spikey hair that has become popularized in the past 30 years in Japan.

I think I have a different view of what looks real then. That looks like manga to me. No doubt about it. It's very detailed manga, but it's still very clearly manga.

Death Note has the more natural head shapes like that picture you just showed. They also have big eyes and wavey hair. Just like in that picture.

I was using those things as an example to japanese art style. That picture doesn't look realistic to me. It looks like a very detailed character in a manga.

I guess I'm one of the few people who actually liked Near. Or maybe it's more accurate to say I didn't hate him.

Ditto. The fact that L didn't deal with Light in the end gave it a bit of a more natural and uncliche'd feeling, which was great imho.

Plotting is not that hard for me, or worldbuilding for that matter. It's the characters I have a problem with, the only good or cool ones I make, I end up making their life hell or killing them off. I am not a nice creator to my characters. The problem is every other character I write, who have a "good life"(not really) and stay alive, I think I make them too boring or too sarcastic(for better or worse).

That sounds in fact VERY interesting.

As to the topic of Cloud drawing a manga, sure, do go for it!
But I'd like to quote Confess-A-Bear on this:

Confess-A-Bear wrote...

As they say the Greater the challenge the Greater the Reward.

Also what doesn't kill us normally will in its second attempt.

If you've come to a complete stand-still with manga (which is probable but not unavoidable), where you either need to start over with manga sacrificing potentially most everything, or start with another route, do try to find and walk this second option.

Taking a difficult path is definitely ok. But one needs to understand when the route is closed (or has failed).

As to the training in drawing real people and in different styles, it's definitely necessary. Without diversity of skill/knowledge an artist is worth nothing.

Sorry about my statement earlier guys.  I apologize.  Was feeling too saturated at the time because I looked through the MLP thread wasn't digging it much lol.  Anyway.  Well back to watching some Ergo Proxy.  I much prefer deeper, more philosophical animation.  ;)

I don't know about Ergo Proxy being philosophical.

In fact I don't even remember what happened in that anime. It didn't make any sense to me and that tsun-tsun goth girl didn't even get naked.

You are right, it's not the pen that makes it manga, it's the fact that it's manga that makes it manga.=]

Manga just means comic, that picture was done in a way a comic is done, so that means it would be a manga picture. Styles are styles, manga is manga.

As for your albums, it's just a few anime pictures, some manga art and a lot of fanart. But none of that even shows half the styles of manga there are, or that I have seen. So that's why none of those pictures look like that.

You know the west, even with the Internet does not get much manga over here, maybe about 5% of all manga ever get over here. And I am talking about new manga, not old manga. If you even go to Japan you will see what I mean.

@eroeru Is it that interesting? You don't even know what my story is even about?=]

Yeah buit I still liked Re-L even though she was kind of a B.

There was only one episode that didn't make sense to me and that was towards the end.

You know you don't always have to take things so literally. I know manga isn't an art-style. But it usually has a certain look to it. USUALLY, being the key word in that statement. Just like comics USUALLY have a certain style to them.

Things like that make you incredibley difficult to talk to. And the smiley faces after every other paragraph. It's like you're trying to be obnoxious.

The point was, out of all the shows and books and fanarts (and I usually only use the fanart that looks similar to the original style) they still all looked similar. You can easily tell they come from the japanese (or as I said "manga") style. Hell, most of them even look like they're drawn by the same person.

So in short, I use the words "manga" and "japanese" interchangeabley when I'm talking about art, sue me. I know for a fact you knew that. You just enjoy being difficult.

Sorry. But in my experience there are a lot of idiots who can't tell style and manga apart.

As for what is usually manga art? I have seen a lot of different styles in my years to the point where "usually" means very little. And to be honest, your albums don't have that many manga pictures in them to show what is usually a manga style. Anime pictures and fanart don't count.

If I stop using smiley faces, my posts would then come off a bit more like "dry wit". I think that would be more obnoxious, so I guess I will do that then.

You see me as someone who enjoys being difficult, but I don't see myself as that.

The manga and the anime usually look the same. Companies that make the anime wouldn't get much money from those die-hard manga fans if they screwed up the art-style. So the reason my album has mostly anime pictures as opposed to manga is because it looks exactly the same, except one's in color.

The characters still look perfect, which is why I'd have to argue with you about it "not counting".

With the smiles it just looks like you're trolling. Which is why it irks me so much.

And I answer that with my statement above. It just always looks like you're trolling, and the fact that you usually take things literally. It seems like you're trying to pick fights with everyone. Especially in a debate. The only time people smile when debating is when they're trying to be snide.

That's sometimes the case regarding self-reflection and second-hand opinions. Other people have a tendency notice things about a person that the person themselves won't.
