Speaking of Rebellions - Did you ever watch Code Geass, Sim? From a conventional stand point it's quite similar to Death Note. I liked it a lot.

 

It's probably on my top ten. Not only was Lelouch 10X the character Light was (he's far more human, grey, empathetic... just everything about him is handled better) but the political intrigue was handled well and the battles were amazing. Though R2 kind of ran out of 'ideas' in the whole tactics part of the story, it still pretty much held its own. The ending was marvellous, so bittersweet, one of the best endings I've seen in a looooong time.

 

Also, 'dat first opening...

I got both Death Note and Code Geass on my list. Not sure when I'm gonna watch them :P

 

Make sure to bump both up in your list. They're pretty much your much-watch animes like FMAB is.

The second arc doesn't hold NEARly (see what I did there? Eh, eh?) As well as the first, but it's still a great watch, especially the end. It's pretty powerful stuff.

 

P.S Go for the dub. Just for L's voice actor, he makes the dub what it is.

 

Then you have Code Geass which is just f*cking brilliant in almost every way possible. Not only is the main protagonist well written as somebody who you can love and hate at the same time, there are battles in it which make you sit on the edge of your d*ck by just how nerve wrecking they are. And the ending of Code Geass (as continued in R2) is just amazing. Anything negative said about R2 can be totally forgiven AFTER that ending. xD

Code Geass started good but it ending up being a pretty weak Gundam.

 

Better than Seed and 00 sure, but that's not saying much.

 

 

Death Note is great if you like a-holes who try to out ego each other and stories that make it up as they go along.

Yeah, I heard that. My brother seemed to have enjoyed it. He only thought it was too short.

 

He prefers anime's that have 100+ episodes xD

Light can go die in a ditch though.

I think you'll find most of Death Note's criticisms lie within the second half. But it's a good thing it's far shorter than the first. Also, you could pretty much end Death Note with the first arc if you wanted to.

Death Note was good in that it made Jump/Shueisha look more at volume sales and having more darker shonen manga is neat too I guess. Ones with villain main characters are also good.

 

But when it became a romance story about Light and L it got bad. So no Near is not when it got bad.

 

That and the fact good Light was BS.
