:| Careful with those words Sim... Deconstruction series like PMMM wouldn't be as good as they are if the played straight side of things didn't exist to begin with.
Still unsure how I feel about the new transformations including CG but I'd be a damn liar if I tried to say I wasn't super looking forward to Crystal.

School Days kinda fits the bill. Its definitely not for the faint of heart though. And its not that good IMO, except for a few moments.

School Days is... something else that's for sure. 
The funny and or vaguely interesting point there is that it's again based off a VN and pretty much went with one of the worst possible ending paths. If I remember right, there are a handful of bad endings in a similar vein but the anime went with one of the darker ones. Admittedly that's exactly what sprung to mind too when you said that, Liam. 
I dunno, sometimes adaptions are pretty good but since it gets brought up a ton anyway, the When They Cry adaptions are supposedly kind of... bad once you compare them against the source material. I can't comment there since I haven't watched either season proper and only read a chunk of Umineko but it sounds like they cut a lot out (both the question and answer phases of both sets are very long).

One of the frustrating things about my main computer being a Mac is that I rarely get to enjoy VNs unless I jump through a bunch of hoops.

I've actually played it, and enjoyed it. A very interesting project that I think turned out pretty darn good in my opinion.

Even with Windows 7 sometimes it's a gamble on whether or not older ones are going to work proper these days. I have a handful of ones I want to work on reading, it's just been kind of difficult to figure out exactly what I'm in the mood for. Fuwanovel is a great site as far as easily getting translations are concerned, though I'm not sure it will actually alleviate any of your Mac based difficulties.
