I think at the point of Baccano's release we've come to a place where we can talk about 9/11 without the entire world bursting into tears. It's evidently a sad tragedy, but so was Columbine, the Oklahoma bombings, the Holocaust and the massacre at ütoya in Norway.

 

 

I think it's an interesting allusion to how Baccano reflects history with its own rules of logic. A nice little touch.

Watch Aldnoah Zero's first episode while you're at it. The best mecha anime of the season gets off with a blast. It's a rare anime in which the destruction of the moon is less impressive than a spaceship nuking New Orleans in a landing sequence. (I mean, Orleans? Not New York? Or Tokyo? Or Paris?)

 

As for other anime of the season-

 

Space Dandy is an awesome acid trip as always. Takes a new look at infinite parallel universes, and provides the perfect excuse to rewatch the best zombie episode ever.

 

Sailor Moon is not for me, but looks like a great visual update of the classic.

 

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun is probably going to be the funniest shoujo romance-comedy of the season, and had be laughing far too much. A girl who's crushing on a romance manga artist, and whose confessions come across as asking for an autograph? There's potential here.

 

Shirogani no Ishi is... meh, at the moment. No compelling catch for the other Giant Robot of the season.

I just finished the last episode of Evangelion, and I must say I loved it because...

It wrapped up the major themes of the story while still keeping the overall feeling of the show. We would constantly see the character's need for affection and approval throughout the series, and that is one of the most basic needs that I think everyone has. What the last two episodes showed was how complex of a desire this can be. It showed how we are constantly fighting with ourselves, and that is why it is so difficult to find this affection. At the same time, getting this affection isn't the thing that will give us meaning in our lives. If we seek meaning from outside sources, then we will always end up empty and unfulfilled inside. The characters in this show faced inner turmoil because they stayed focused on the bad things that happened to them throughout their lives. Much of the time, this left them trying to figure out their place in the world. Rei wasn't human, so the only purpose she had was to pilot the Eva. Asuka and Shinji had no true parents and no true friends. They were only payed attention to when they piloted the Evas, so therefore their purpose on this world was to pilot the Evas. It's much like how many people live their lives. They are only happy if they have a significant other or if they have the best things out there. Our value to the world is measured by what we give to other people or how much money we make. However, the other way to attain this value is to find the value within ourselves so we can know how to accept and love someone.

 

This is why it was important that they studied Shinji's mindset in the final episode. Much of what he was thinking was connected to the thinking of those around him, and the thinking of the world at large. He was surrounded by people who defined their lives on a few bad moments or a bad relationship. Ritsuko went through that with her mother. Misato went through that with her father. Both of them defined their world view on that. Ritsuko didn't want to be a mother because she felt that she was her mother, and her mother was hardly a parent. Misato went through life trying to fill the void left by her father by trying to find a surrogate father. Their values on certain aspects of life were determined by these instances in their lives. The old teacher that taught Shinji's class repeated the same story about the Second Impact over and over again. What the world lost was the only thing he could convey to the students. The woman who gave advice on the radio in the background while the characters would drive would always say something along the lines of "it was much worse after the Second Impact". Basically, all this showed was the character's tendency to focus on the bad things in life, and how that can be destructive. Getting back to Shinji, he wasn't able to find self-worth because his father abandoned him. How can someone abandoned by their father ever be accepted by anyone? Well, as the anime suggested, it's by loving oneself. Humans will constantly hurt each other (the Hedgehog fable), so it doesn't make sense to try to find your self-worth through someone or something else, otherwise you will find yourself in a constant state of pain.

 

What complicates this idea is that we as individuals are defined by the people around us. What makes us different from other people is what defines us as individual people. If people only think that their opinion on themselves is what defines them, then they are ignorant to the world. It's not a bad thing to feel good about people complementing you or loving you. It's not a bad thing to listen to people and try to become stronger as a part of it. However, it's destructive to put all of your stock into that. Essentially, people need their own opinion on themselves, and they need to know what others opinion on themselves is to be complete, or to understand their place in the world. I haven't watched the movies yet, so I don't have the full picture, but I think the purpose of Human Instrumentality Project is to ensure that every human is compete, and that every human doesn't have to go through the strife of figuring out what their place is. Whether this is a good or bad idea will probably be revealed in the films. >

 

To wrap all of this up, I think this series was all about questioning what our meaning or purpose for being here is. What I think the author was trying to say is that our purpose is ultimately what we decide what our purpose is.

 

Either that or I just completely misunderstood everything. Either way, it was an entertaining and thought provoking series, and I understand why it's held in such regard now. I also understand the need for the director's cuts and movies that came out afterwards, as not every detail was covered in the 26 episode run time of this show. The animation and art style was really good. It reminded me of watching old-school sci-fi shows. At any rate, this was a series created by a guy with a lot of vision.
