So yeah, it's hard not to watch this without gushing.
I think PMMM is a show you need to watch twice in order to appreciate it fully. When I first watched it, it was probably my fourth or fifth anime from a number which were already dark by themselves. Code Geass, Death Note, Mirrai Nikki... I had gotten used to the fact that anime, though cartoons, provided a wide variety of entertainment for kids, adults and the rest. So when PMMM came about as dark, I wasn't as shocked as everyone else.
However.
I was (and still am) a noob at the time. I had NO IDEA that there was an entire genre called 'Magical Girls' that existed and were basically an even 'girlier' version of the Power Puff Girls. Fighting evil, saving the day etc... this is why I can appreciate its genius a whole lot more now since I'm fully aware that out there in the anime world, there are hundreds of shows of little girls dressed up in pink saving the day and shooting rainbows out of their c*nts.
So yeah, that's just one thing. I also never appreciated just how beautiful the quality of the animation and art really is. To this day I don't really use 'art' as a way to rate an anime, but it's still nice for things to look pretty, and PMMM looks gorgeous. The lighting and colours are used perfectly to set up the mood or at times, provide a stark contrast to what is and to what's around them. This Magical Girl world they flung themselves into is a sh*tty place, f*ck, you can't even skip rent, so when everything is so nice and shiny outside (like that goddamn awesome school she goes to) it's awesome to see the darker colours used for the more personal scenes and interactions. The fights aren't like your typical anime, so that's always a plus. You know me, I HATE 'flashy background screen' thing they pull, and ever since Samurai Champloo my standards have gone waaaaay up. Though PMMM doesn't really choreograph the way Samurai Champloo does, its actions sequences are pulled of really well, the same quality, but in a different set I suppose. Sort of how Black Lagoon as fantastic f*cking gun fights too. It's its own 'awesome.'
Then we have Sayaka, and I swear I might be reading too much into this but her base naivety is a farce. "Justice" "saving people" "good"... all words she uses in order to cover up the deep regret of becoming a Magical Girl. She's trying her best to be like Mami, but deep down she's sh*tting her briefs but still going forward. That's why I love her now, you can only be brave when you're scared after all.
Now, finally. Once you know what it's all about you REALLY get to enjoy the way Homura's dialogue is set and how she reacts to certain things Madoka says and does. At first you're a bit iffy on it, sure, you know she has a past, all anime characters like that do.
But you don't expect THAT.
And so it sort of adds to the tragedy that is Homura and to the brilliance of Gen's direction of the plot.
That's all for now.
Enjoy a gid.

P.S
I can't be the only Kyubey fan here. He's just so freaking evil and awesome I love him.
"Madoka-chan you mustn't it's too dangerous!"
What he really means
"B*tch get yo' ass out of here before I get mah long-ass ears to f*ck yo' pretty face up."
