Just finished watching Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal, damn fine work.

That's 95 episodes no?

Daayum. Give us a summary of what you think.

I think he meant the OVA, could be wrong.

I do like Obertein but von Schenkopp is so over the top badass, its great.

I love them both for different reasons.

But yeah, Oberstein is the intellectual batman. Really, NO ONE likes him for all the reasons that are just totally wrong but still totally credible xD

His methods are Machiavellian, but his ambitions are humble. Man, what a great character.

Sim: Why do you think I told you not to call Sailor Moon "boring" compared to PMMM a while back? Deconstructions work best when you have at least a passing knowledge or experience with the original genre and that's one of the really big appeals of the series for folks that grew up with the likes of Sailor Moon, Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, Precure etc. Now that you're becoming more versed in the various genres out there, it can put a new spin things. :)

Magical Girl deconstructions tend to tackle the topics at different angles but I have to admit that they are something that is super dear to me, with my three favorites being PMMM (obviously :P), Shoujo Kakumei Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena) and Princess Tutu. All wonderful series, some more... dire than others but they work to deconstruct what it means to be a magical girl, or typical fairytale tropes that we have thrown at us pretty much all our lives.

Ah Cardcaptor Sakura that was the first manga I ever owned. The art was flipped for us dumb Americans.

Those were the days.

The same dude did 'Defence Devil' is it any good? I'd rather read that first cos it's completed.

Late response, but Defence Devil is ok. Starts off with a unique premise but devolves into a battle manga.

But read Shin Angyo Onshi though. It's completed too. Damn good story. Me personally i put it up there with Berserk.

And von Schenkopff is the physical batman.

And what a dad!

@ Sim

I'm all for the PMMM gushing, and you know I love my Sayaka gifs but could we avoid some of the more colorful phrasing please?

For what it's worth I really liked QB too. It's easy to write it off as being evil but that's not strictly true.

The magical girl genre is pretty underrated as a whole. Sure most are your typical run of the mill take it or leave it anime but I can't help but feel many of the better ones get overlooked unfairly because of the whole "it's little girls" mentality.

I just finished up Utena myself and I can back up Ani in saying that it's an incredibly solid watch and lives up to it's name as the grandfather of deconstruction. I'm a bit surprised to say that the movie is probably just as surreal and filled to the brim with symbolism as PMMM was. It will probably take my brain a little while just to sort it all out.

The only magical girl anime I like is sailor moon and PMMM, all the others can go in a corner imo.

Maybe there are other very good magical girl anime on par with those two I just don't know about because of an ocean of horrible magical girl anime hiding it.

Iono I remember watching Kiddy Grade, Magic Knight Rayearth and a few other ones when I was younger and still enjoying them. Most are just as decent as any other anime out there.

I'd strongly recommend checking out Ani's favorites if you ever get a chance House, she has good tastes :)

So got around to watching Tokyo ghoul, eh. It's not bad but the censorship, bad pacing  and changing things just rubs me the wrong way, vastly prefer the manga which is disappointing because AoT(a very good manga with a fantastic adaption so far) is also extremely graphic and the show was hardly as toned down as Tokyo ghoul is. That neon effect crap they did in that one fight? Come on.

Yep.

Now on to the anime series.

BTW, this is an awesome song and goes well with Kenshin slicing up assassins in the credits.

I'm watching this immediately after.

Speaking of Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal, I really enjoyed it as well. For some reason I really dig stories that involve a character following in another's footsteps, I don't know why. In this case Kenshin life journey really mirrors that of his mentor, as least that's how I see it anyway.

ROFL, that's me holding back, Isi, I'm the most vulgar man in the Seven Kingdoms.

As for Kyubey, sure, I agree, but labelling him that way is easier than going into depth. I haven't got Chris' skills in explaining what you're feeling. But he is the most opportunistic bastard there xD it's like a salesman but worse xD

I meant that in real life. I don't really get emotional there, just with things like anime, books, games etc... notsomuch in real life, though. I kind of lack sympathy for reality.
