The only magical girl anime I like is sailor moon and PMMM, all the others can go in a corner imo.
Maybe there are other very good magical girl anime on par with those two I just don't know about because of an ocean of horrible magical girl anime hiding it.
Kore wa zombie desu ka is best magical girl anime.
Sim: Why do you think I told you not to call Sailor Moon "boring" compared to PMMM a while back? Deconstructions work best when you have at least a passing knowledge or experience with the original genre and that's one of the really big appeals of the series for folks that grew up with the likes of Sailor Moon, Rayearth, Card Captor Sakura, Precure etc. Now that you're becoming more versed in the various genres out there, it can put a new spin things.
Magical Girl deconstructions tend to tackle the topics at different angles but I have to admit that they are something that is super dear to me, with my three favorites being PMMM (obviously ), Shoujo Kakumei Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena) and Princess Tutu. All wonderful series, some more... dire than others but they work to deconstruct what it means to be a magical girl, or typical fairytale tropes that we have thrown at us pretty much all our lives.
Huzzah! Grew up with Sailor Moon so PMMM kinda became in a way me returning home to my roots. It absolutely does its part making me adore PMMM even further because i did spend a lot of time watching Sailor Moon. Can at any time play the opening track in my head and recall the visuals. Totally going to watch Utena and Tutu at some point aswell since i now got a real taste for the Magical Girl genre. It's really nice coming home!
@ Sim
I'm all for the PMMM gushing, and you know I love my Sayaka gifs but could we avoid some of the more colorful phrasing please?
For what it's worth I really liked QB too. It's easy to write it off as being evil but that's not strictly true.
I absolutely feel the same and as i said in my novel a few weeks back, i feel that calling QB evil is being rather unfair and remove a lot of the depth that actually is QB. He require more words to be described in truth.

Absolutely, bro, but remember I haven't got the great gift of speech that Chris has xD when I say 'evil' I mean mostly a magnificent bastard, which could go any number of ways
P.S Looked back at episode 6 because something was bugging me. Madoka is (writing/reading?) "Hey Diddle Diddle the Cat and the Fiddle." It's there for only a second with Madoka's milfin' mum's voice over it with basically "if she's so stuck with what she thinks is right, trying doing something wrong to snap her out of it" (not an exact quote.)
From Isi's, bro's and Anima's posts, you KNOW Gen is a sort of Martin when it comes to these things. So I looked up the meaning behind the poem and there seems to be TONS...
s so obviously laden with metaphor and meaning that generations of scholars have fallen over themselves to apply one. Unfortunately, there's no paper trail leading us to the first versions, let alone the code to understanding it. The verse has attracted so many different theories that it's impossible to tell which, if any, was the first.
Of course, if it's beyond generations of historians, philosophers and literature professors there's really no point in actually trying to figure out the meaning and just apply the one most fitting to Madoka Magica.

This is why I love Tolkein.
This open season, on retrospectively forcing an explanation onto the nursery rhyme, reached such infamous levels that it ended up parodied by Tolkien. In his hobbit ditty, 'The Man in the Moon Who Stayed up Too Late', Tolkien established it as a 'ridiculous song' which originated on Middle Earth. It was as good a claim as any, with the added bonus that no-one could take it seriously.

Perhaps it's the copious amounts of theories behind its meaning which applies to Madoka. The mystery behind it parallels the mystery behind her wish?
Or then again, this might be another "THE CURTAIN WAS F*CKING BLUE BECAUSE I LIKE BLUE" kind of thing.
If you mean her original wish in timeline 1, it was to save the life of the little black cat you see in the OP who got hit by a car. Selfless even from the get go. That one got revealed in one of the drama cds.
I don't think I've ever personally looked up any of the interpretations for Hey Diddle-Diddle so that'll be worth a look. Thanks for bringing it up~ :3 I'm also in the camp of being fond of QB, even if he is a little ****. It's interesting to look at a few of the literary inspirations that ran with the series/Rebellion. I'll spoil code it just to be safe.
Spoiler
Faust heavily for the series, with Homura filling the title role of Faust and Madoka serving as the Gretchen of the story. Fitting since Madoka's witch's name is Kriemhild Gretchen. It's been heavily suggested that Paradise Lost was one for Rebellion.
omg, why is it so f*cking hard to find the Gintama dvd collection? There's 'Collection' 1, 2, 3, 4 but each only come with 13 episodes. It's like they WANT me to pirate this -.-
Then there's the entire season one, but the subs are in ITALIAN.
P.S To find out how many episodes came in just ONE collection was a b*tch. They don't really tell you in the customer reviews or item descriptions. Man are they making it hard for me to give them money.
PP.S Yep. Looks like this is another pirate job -.-
First LotGH and now this... hopefully they'll have JoJo on DvD.
Bebop is probably the only anime I actually want to own along with Baccano. Should invest in them in the future, me thinks. Along with the Bebop film which I personally thought had a better villain than Vicious.

Ah, the Bebop film! I suppose I should still watch it.
But that's mostly because of his implementation and the fact that Bebop doesn't stretch its narrative over one particular plot-point.
As a result, Vicious shows up every now and then randomly, like an obnoxious relative, ruining your furniture then immediately leave to come back next week.
I love Cowboy Bebop and couldn't care less about Vicious. He's there for the plot, that's it. All I cared for was the main crew and I suppose that was the point.
I love Gintama also. I've just watched an entire episode of four people stuck in the toilet with no paper to wipe their arses and it's been one of the most entertaining things I've watched in a long time.
P.S Good thing Vicious wasn't actually an interesting character. The world couldn't handle such perfection.
I've always looked at Bebop was a character focused story as while there where arcs like the Vicious one, there where also a alot of episodes that delt with the daily life of the Bebop crew that simply get you invested into the characters and half the time didn't even continue a arc(space blob of doom anyone)
So I watched all of KLK, it was pretty fun. I felt it was similar to TTGL and the other Gainax/Trigger anime, probably more over the top than normal though, it basically just felt like being at the beach or something at a certain point because of how few clothes everyone was wearing.
As for all the magical girl genre talk, I also feel Sailor Moon is essential to my understanding of something like PMMM. It's unique in that it combines some of Urobuchi's purely nihilistic malicious/horror perspective from things like Saya no Uta with that sense of pure heartedness and joy from the magical girl genre. <Sort of Spoiler> I don't think I would have enjoyed PMMM as much without those first 3 episodes establishing that sense of friendship and optimism even if it appears sort of plain on the surface.
Here's some f*pping material for Geth and his pikachu fetish.
