I have actually never seen Cowboy Bebop nor Sailor Moon. The only 90s one I have actually watched is Trigun.
Well Bebop is easy to digest, if it were to be drawn in western comic cartoon art style, people wouldn't know it's an anime.
Sailor Moon, now that's full force magical girl.

I have no clue who that is.
The reputation of Team Gurren echoes far and wide. When they talk about its badass leader - the man of indomitable spirit and masculinity - they're talking about me! The mighty Kamina!

Madoka Magica
Shin Sekai Yori
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Welcome to the NHL
Watamote
Fullmetal alchemist: Brotherhood
That's just a few off the top of my head.
I'd be careful with those. Even if you can enjoy them without any knowledge of their respective genres, deconstructions are hardly starter material.

That's what I have heard. I am still trying to catch up to the 2014 animes. I don't think I have the time for older ones atm.

Cancel your plans.
Watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
Or watch Gunbuster, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, and then TTGL, if you want it to be your favourite anime ever.

Point taken, though I still don't think it should be an issue for an anime booby to appreciate and enjoy them.

Well, as long as they rewatch it sometimes, sure thing. But PMMM, eh, don't know. Would you ever look at the cutesy mascot characters of magical girl animes with the same eye ever if you start with PMMM?

You are talking about the Cat thing right from Modoka Magica?

I have actually never seen Cowboy Bebop
*sigh*

Anyway, since all the usuals have been listed such as FMAB, Madoka Magica etc...
I'll just go ahead and gush my own favourite out of the way...
Prepare thy anus for 110 episodes of intrigue, war, politics and lots and lots of talking!

But to start with, I really think Death Note is a great introduction to the world of anime. It brushes away any doubts of it being 'pokemon' and is a great watch until episode 26 where it gradually descends into a decent watch.
But you're basically watching it for one person and one person alone...

Going to have to agree with Khayness completely. As much as I adore Madoka Magica, I have this little bug nipping the back of my brain on being bothered about the idea of people starting with it, and then shunning the played straight magical girl series afterwards. I've given the deconstruction speech before though so I'll just stop right there.
Ehh but a lot of people will shun the genre regardless just for the demographic, if I can get them to make just one exception I'd still call it a win.

PMMM was one of my earliest animes when I started this February. But I got to say, it went up a TON in my enjoyment factor when I watched it the second time, you appreciate it A LOT more the second time round.
Dude, just watch FMAB, it's the safest bet. There is literally a 6% chance you will NOT like FMAB. Everybody loves FMAB, it's like the A Song of Ice and Fire books, you'll find very few who will actually speak ill of it.
Mind, there are TWO series.
Fullmetal Alchemist
And
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
Go for Brotherhood, it follows the manga 95% whilst FMA drifted off after a while. They are completely different stories with the same characters. But yeah, always go for Brotherhood ![]()

It's almost guaranteed that you'll love it.
