Abyss and Symphonia are two Tales games I'm interested in. One because I like the idea of a protagonist starting out as a douche, and the other because Symphonia is highly regarded, so yeah. Evidently, I'll probably end up watching the anime for Abyss.
All right, coolios! Given the choice I'm always a douche, so yeah should be fun.
Well since i've played them as well I can give a few pointers. Vesperia is great (my favorite) the gameplay is a bit dated but has one of my favorite JRPG protagonists of all time. Graces is **** it's got amnesia and power of friendship bullshit. Xillia is like final fantasy 13 good edition (Milla maxwell is ****** awesome too). I still need to play Symphonia and i'm playing Abyss now.
Chris, what do you think about the Tales games? They've been recommended to me a few times by Nae. But since I love P3 I thought I'd ask you too since you're here.
I'm loving them.... Vesperia is what eventually got me interested in more JRPGs and I ended up adoring Persona. Well, I don't love all of them. Graces is a piece of tripe. But I love Vesperia, Troy Baker as the main character and Yuri is one of the more awesome JRPG protagonist, whose character traits somewhat juxtaposes the usual demeanor of what to expect I'd say. Also the cast are generally all likeable, and there's plenty of banter throughout the game, some that are unlocked through certain scenarios, some that simply show up as time or the plot progresses, some that show up after optional bosses etc.
They are referred to as skits, which has become an essential part of the games now, it's also an essential key that adds to the characters' growth.
An example of a skit could be this one below. Pretty amusing. They can range from generally being amusing exchanges of quip between characters, but they can also provide drama and tension, sometimes inner thinking of the individual party members
The combat is what is praised mostly about Tales. It's not very traditional in terms of JRPGs, it's more action-oriented but fun regardless. It's really been geared up with the release of Xillia. It's also quite challenging to master when it comes to boss battles -- That's for certain, but once you'd figured it out and learned the combos, then it becomes really fun I'd say. There's also opportunity for exploration in Vesperia, even if it isn't as detailed as you'd might expect from say... a sandbox game. Sadly, it's become more straightforward with later games, but alas.
In relation to the thread. I'll say that I overall enjoyed the prequel film a lot. You could watch it without having played the game yet, I think.
There are tons of them throughout the game -- They regularly show up as you traverse the landscape. Think of them as the equivalent of BioWare party banter from Dragon Age. The one up there was just an example of the more humorous ones, hehe
There's this one too -- Raven is one of the best characters in that game, he's also a bit complex with a mysterious past. One of those mysterious characters you'll find in JRPGs every now and then, like Balthier in FFXII (where pretty much everybody else is uninteresting).
All of this reminds me I still need to get on with watching Bayo x)

Hehe -- It's a bit of a spoiler, but essentially the main character starts out as a pompous arsehole, who gets on the nerves of his fellow party members and it ends up having dire consequences. There are certain memorable points, where he goes through a complete change and slowly starts to act like a real hero. Most entertainment tend to avoid having a-hole protagonists, because of the likely risks that results in losing the attention of the audience, or any sort of relation between protagonist and player (in regards to games of course). True Detective and Song of Ice and Fire does it quite well, in terms of books and TV, and you got your Ladd Russo in Baccano obviously etc.
Incidentally, if you love a good war story, with some underlying political themes and XCOM Enemy Unknown awesome-tactical-gameplay, which in large part focuses on the characters who are caught in the middle of the fighting and relationship between the... Well, I recommend Valkyria Chronicles too (Gonna make a JRPG thread one of these days for this, I swear). Anyway, that's all really x)
I've been planning on making a JRPG and visual novel thread but I never get round it.
Yes go, I was actually thinking of doing it myself, but you have a cute girl in your picture and everyone knows that's auto-win for this kind of thing.
I got Symphonia chronicles recently, I've always liked the Tales series starting with Destiny a million years ago. I guess we'll see how it goes I'm fairly excited.
There are so many other random JRPGs out there though like I finally finished Radiata Stories which was pretty fun, and you guys already mentioned Tonelico. I also got the end of the Drakengard 3 (which I count as basically done cause screw that rhythm game), and that was pretty interesting also.
It's great I love the games mainly due to the amazing humor and the way they subvert the whole good vs evil thing. Apart from the second game. We don't talk about the second game. Anyways i've been meaning to try the tales of the abyss anime but I want to finish the game first.
I did watch the Tales of the Abyss anime and it was fine, much more enjoyable than most anime. I suspect that the game is probably more fun though (have not played it)

I'm not going to defend Vaan or Penelo but I think the concepts behind Ashe and Basch were pretty interesting IMO. I think what happened though was since the director left halfway through that game, the remaining staff was like oh man this Balthier guy he's great and had him do everything.
Ani pushed me towards the series and I owe her a debt of gratitude for that. I don't have a whole lot of experience in the VN department so there's not much I can personally compare it to but I can *easily* say that it has one of the best and most thought provoking stories I've experiences in gaming. It's like what Lost would have been if the storyline actually went somewhere and had a point to it.
It's good cause I needed something smart to scratch an itch I had in my brain after how disappointing Steins;Gate the anime turned out to be (I'm just waiting for the day someone comes along and says how great of a series it is so I can throw book posts about everything it did poorly and why it doesn't deserve the acclaim it has received)

That's what I've heard, and they seem universally praised. Problem is, I've already got a few I need to get through first. Soon enough though.
The only video game adaptions I'v watched in anime format is Persona 4 and Devil survior 2 which where decent(DS2 was better then P4 imo though) not the best, but decent enough. Golden though.... Even Kana can't save it.
So everything since the Yoshiwara arc has had its ups and downs. There have been some really funny episodes and some that you could really do without. The Tama-Virus arc was 'aight, but I never enjoyed it that much. The Otsu arc was funny but dragged on for far too long and the 'Saw' arc, though short, was kind of pointless in the end.
But man, the ups and downs look like they're gonna get made up for with this new 'Spider' arc. Holy sh*t it's the first episode and I'm loving it. The chemistry between Gin and Tsu for one thing, is brilliant, and of course, it looks like this'll be action packed, and there's nothing better than seeing Gin-san go into badass mode.
Still love Gintama, it's probably third in my anime favourites. First being LotGH and second FMAB.
