<Spoilers everywhere>
KLK is full of bursting natural energy and spirit, but without that harsh context that SAO has (we're gonna die, etc) it feels slightly overindulgent, as in, there isn't a really pressing horror in their lives (cept towards the end, I guess)
Well, it's a different story. The first half is about revenge and finding out who killed her dad. Not all stories need to be about immediate impending death to avoid this strange "soft" label you're using, do they?
Another thing is I feel the KLK characters are soft (like Ryuko and Mako) because they're kind of all in it together in the end. The Big Four and Satsuki were all just "training" them in the end, and the beach guys were all also fighting with Ryuko and Mako. Kiryuin was so deranged, I didn't really feel worried about her, and I feel like they had an easier choice to fight. Even the crazy violent portions like getting shot at in the van to school felt like it was really a joke, I wasn't worried about them actually dying so it was a different kind of heroism.
I still don't see where the "soft" label comes in here. When you talk about "soft characters" the most logical meaning for that would be that they are unassertive or pushovers, and I can't think of anyone in KLK who fits that bill. I guess you could say, the setting of KLK isn't really a "dark" setting, and it has more power of friendship and over the top crazy action, but again, I don't think all settings need to be grim and dark, and I would say that itself is as typical as the Kill la Kill/Gurren Lagann style. And it's not like SAO is Berserk we're talking about, here. Regardless, it sounds like that's not really an issue with the characters themselves, but the setting. But fair enough if you just prefer a specific type of setting over others.
Now that you mention antagonists, the antagonist of the first arc really has nonsensical motivations from what I can see, and the one in the second half is just... yeah. I don't see either of them really helping the 'dark' vibe when their role as puppet master is so uninspired. (compared to, say, 999)
All that moaning aside, I actually do like the setting of SAO well enough. Just, you know, you're comparing it to KLK.
