I think when watching KLK one should immediately assume that what they are watching isn't meant to be taken seriously, rather, that you should just have as much fun as the anime is by totally absorbing its ludicrousness and accepting the fact that TRIGGER were just trying to make a really weird, but totally awesome anime xD
They could have done better.
If I want redicolous I'll watch Nichijou or Gintama. And both still manage to have better characters and plot.
For KLK...I felt like it's trying to be serious and isn't.. kinda like it doesn't know when. Satsuki calling for and condoning murder and dumping people into boiling oil is considered fun and a trait of a good character FFS. All played for laughs and forgotten.

She certainly is heading in an interesting direction nonetheless, she got a good head on her shoulder after all!

Didn't even recognise you with the Naoto avi. If it ain't Yukari it ain't right.

It is so ridiculous, yet so awesome at the same time. It is really full of heart, and even when it features themes like hope, friendship and believing in yourself that has been done to death, I couldn't help but feel that everything managed to get to me on a emotional level. That's epic. I was laughing, fistbumping my way through the show.

I still don't see where the "soft" label comes in here. When you talk about "soft characters" the most logical meaning for that would be that they are unassertive or pushovers, and I can't think of anyone in KLK who fits that bill. I guess you could say, the setting of KLK isn't really a "dark" setting, and it has more power of friendship and over the top crazy action,
Hm you know I get what you are saying now. I think I was trying to just say the SAO characters (I guess and also setting) seemed more realistic and less kind of outrageous, but not without a decent amount of crazy in them also. I think soft just came to me as a term describing anime characters generally, as opposed to like, Dragon Age or Game of thrones characters who are more like "No Screw YOU sir." That probably was not an easy way to divide KLK and SAO which already don't seem very similar. TBH though, that's why I kind of wanted to try comparing them, because they seem fairly different.
I think another small quibble though is I felt TTGL did the power of friendship better. Nia and Kamina were kind of in the outrageous world but somehow felt more realistic also. Whatever happens though Trigger is interesting enough that I wouldn't be surprised if I at least checked out the next thing.

Don't be dumb like me and stop Gurren Lagann before you even reach 10 episodes. It gets sooo much better.
(I actually stopped before the big thing that got your goat. It just felt kinda slow at the time. Man I was dumb.)

Not much for anime myself, too many tics and odd beats that no-doubted come from differences of cultural and social ideas, but I'm a huge fan of Attack on Titan and Evangelion. I like the giant mecha style of anime, and I'm looking at trying Knights of Sidonia and Hardock on Netflix. I used to kind of follow Naruto, but gave up after the Shinobi World War/Madara returns arc just kept going... and going... and going...
But Pacific Rim sort of rekindled my enjoyment of that sort of stuff, and I'm slowly moving towards it again. I don't think I'm ever going to be huge on anime though. Japan's a fascinating place. Lived there for a year growing up, and another 3 months in the Army. Biggest culture shock you're likely to receive from a first world country. Japanese women are hit or miss. Most of them aren't very pretty, but the ones that are are absolute bombshell knock-outs.

...Curious opinions about a whole race of people aside, as far as giant mecha go, you can't get much more giant than Gurren Lagann. Sidonia isn't too bad. You could try Gargantia as well.
Of course there is the obvious elephant in the room, the billions of Gundam shows.
Aldnoah.Zero is airing now and is pretty great so far.
