I prefer to save the best for last. Hence I'm glad I watched the original series before Brotherhood.

The only reason I don't watch the first anime over Brotherhood is because I've watched Brotherhood four times and no way in hell will I be able to watch that without being extremely biased.

Oh, Chewin, do watch Brotherhood afterwards. Whenever is cool, but yeah, Brotherhood is just bloody fantastic.

And Mustang is so f*cking cool and sexy he'll make you switch sexuality for the remainder of the anime.

With Gosick finished I can absolutely recommend people giving it a chance. It's a solid show that got two amazing characters taking the lead and really being the main reason why I'll recommend it. Their interactions and character development were the best parts of Gosick without a doubt. Both Victorique and Kujo will be remembered for quite a while thanks to how well their roles were. Gosick also takes place in in a time and place that I've more or less never watched any media at all which was very refreshing and no doubt made Gosick more likeable with me. Gosick from start to finish was enjoyable and while at the start the arcs were rather weak and a bit underwhelming that was the complete opposite during the last third where they were good or great even. Don't watch Gosick and expect the best mystery plots or the best detective actions, it doesn't have that but what it has does help Victorique and Kujo stand out. Gosick got a few decent side characters aswell that help the show along but I'd hardly say that more than maybe one of them are memorable.

You got that right bro.

VICTORIKKKAAAAAA the eternal loli and baka Kazuya are adorable.

It's kind of like Chuu2 where you only really watch it for the main couple.

But Gosick is more solid in other areas too.

I especially like VICTORIKKAAAAAAAA'S brother.

OMG this chapter!

Spoiler

Yeah, this chapter was great. And it was the believable kind of 'friendship and bravery' crap anime pulls. Kind of a "YOU GOT PUNKED" intrigue-edition.

Been catching up on Fairy Tail, still impressed at the fact that support characters get shine in the series. Then again, I've seen way too much Naruto, where the side characters are discarded and even some main characters (coughSakuracough) are made useless

I'm watching Naruto currently and I can confirm that Sakura's been useless since episode one.

Which is a shame.

Since they keep going on about how well she can mold Chakra.

She's had like 2 good scenes in over fifty episodes.

That's pathetic.

I mean, her lines consist of 'blah blah blah' and SASUKE-KUUUUUUUN.

But yeah, apart from Death Note, there hasn't really been any good detective action in the anime I've watched. And Death Note was good for what is was, but it was hardly Poirot (though I loved L's deductions.)

I know there's Detective Conan, but it'll take a sickle to my balls in order to get me to watch that monster. Anything else worth noting?

I suppose Ghost in the Shell has good police work, but still... there's no eccentric detective action going on. Even Poirot was eccentric in his own little way.

That should be right after you finish FMA, unless you want to make some kittens cry.

Right after, eh? Is Brotherhood significantly different? As in, after the point FMA diverges into its own thing rather than following the manga.

If so, might give it a go right after FMA.

EDIT: @simfampSP

Hah, true! I burst out of laughter when that one soldier asked Mustang why he wants to become President, and I was fully expecting a very serious answer that had some social / political reasoning behind it, yet he gave one about having every female soldier wearing skirts. Dear God, my stomach hurt!

Yeah Brotherhood is very different. The first few episodes... not so much. But the rest? Yes. Very.

And yeah, Chewin, FMA/B is very good at comedy. Unfortunately, Mustang doesn't have those lines in B, but there's still a ton a different things plus the added bad-assery of his finger-clicking fire.

The production value went up LOADS.

So you know what that means?

Sexier Mustang and sexier fire.

Paranoia Agent is excellent, I'd say -- Well, it's not really a detective fiction but it certainly involves elements typical of murder mysteries -- It's a psychological horror mystery, mixed in with some social satire. What is to be understood from that last part is that it plays around with modern pop culture like animation, video games, mascot characters etc. It does through a plot that relays on a mysterious phenomenon, occuring in Musashino, Tokyo, caused by a juvenile "serial assailant" called "Lil' Slugger". It features a large cast of people affected in some way by the phenomenon; usually Lil' Slugger's victims or the detectives assigned to apprehend him. It shifs accordingly, between each character, as more details are revealed about their secret lives and the truth about Lil' Slugger.

What I really like about this anime is the topics it wants to bring to light and discuss -- It's what I love about storytelling in general, in regards to what we as the viewer (in this case) can take away from it, what the creator wanted to say, and how it can potentially affect us, maybe even strengthen us as human beings. I like this anime for its almost psychedelic presentation -- It’s elaborates on the impact we have on what we generally perceive as "our reality" what's real and what's superstition, and how that viewpoint can potentially affect others, which is not always pretty. The ugliness of that truth is what makes Paranoia Agent good.

It’s one of those series that isn’t afraid to show all the hideousness that comes with the “human condition.” Whatever epiphanies and whatnot that it gets, they’re earned.

This is a non-spoiler battle from Brotherhood.

tumblr_msyumdTKpR1sh5vt7o1_500.gif

I say non spoiler since there's no way in hell you'll see who he's fighting.

As for the intrigue... I'll say this. In Brotherhood it's there. Oh yeah it is. But don't expect it to be a major thing. Like the original (I think) it's a side story that gets enveloped by the main plot. But I loved it when it was there, because I love my intrigue.

Oh and I don't know about the original, but Ed and Al's relationship is freaking beautiful in the 2009, and Hohenheim? Dude... you don't know what kind of bad-assery and feels you're getting yourself into. The very name Hohenheim evokes the sense of MAN into everybody.

Sounds intriguing.

Though I might push it to a later date after all. Heard about an anime called Gintama which apparently has some great humor (and is on itself great as well) so might give it a go first. Though 200+ episodes makes me a bit undecided.

It was one of my earlier animes and to be honest the enjoyment was sucked out of me because what I expected was a mystery and got something else entirely. It's far more psychological and fantastical.

It's a shame, but it's like someone going into Lord of the Rings expecting Star Wars. Well... that's a bad analogy, but you know what I mean.

And so, it's entire message flew passed me in the end whilst I was still trying to grasp what on earth was going on.

lol.

Now sadly, History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi has a lot of potential but it seems like it's ending, but Kensei Ma is legendary for how he defeated Mikumo.

Also caught up with Gangsta, and so far this series is promising. Kohske's a good artist and storyteller. Hopefully she's able to keep the series going.

...

Just go a few pages back.

You'll see me gushing over my third favourite anime evaaar.

Gintama is all laughs and feels. It has excellent drama too when it wants to and the action... oh god, in the later episodes, the action is just 'jump out your seat' brilliant.

The good thing about it that if you're fed up of Shinpachi screaming in your ear you can skip and episode or two and not miss anything.

Though I suspect your kind of humour will be more in line with the Shinsegumi (the police.) Those dudes are funnier than the main three.

That's a shame -- Can't win them all, really.

In retrospect, I haven't watched many anime for a while and mostly because there aren't many that have managed to intrigue me enough to sit down with.

I've found going back to film and shows again, lately.

It's also to say what sort of anime I'd like, really. So yeah..

It doesn't mean I can't re-watch it and appreciate it in the future xD

In the end I've always blamed myself for expecting something else. I've never thought that Paranoia Agent was bad at all.

As for anime that might catch your eye...

Have you watched Shinsekai Yori yet?

I think that's one definitely for you.

Ooooh, films :-/

Yikes. I can't do them unless they're at least 2 hours long or some extension of a series.

For me they go way to fast. I'm starting to like a character then BAM, the credits roll.

That's what I get for watching tons of series and anime. Last series I watched proper was Bones and Breaking Bad. Well... GoT, but that's like obligatory watching for me since I'm a huuuuuuuuuuge ASOIAF nut. Even if some parts are 'meh' compared to the books, it's still gorgeous.

Breaking Bad tho'

198qj0pvzn5wqgif.gif

Want to get around to Vikings... and what the hell am I talking about again?

Oh yeah, Shinsekai Yori. I think you'll enjoy that one.
