It doesn't mean I can't re-watch it and appreciate it in the future xD

In the end I've always blamed myself for expecting something else. I've never thought that Paranoia Agent was bad at all.

As for anime that might catch your eye...

Have you watched Shinsekai Yori yet?

I think that's one definitely for you.

Ooooh, films :-/

Yikes. I can't do them unless they're at least 2 hours long or some extension of a series.

For me they go way to fast. I'm starting to like a character then BAM, the credits roll.

That's what I get for watching tons of series and anime. Last series I watched proper was Bones and Breaking Bad. Well... GoT, but that's like obligatory watching for me since I'm a huuuuuuuuuuge ASOIAF nut. Even if some parts are 'meh' compared to the books, it's still gorgeous.

Breaking Bad tho'

198qj0pvzn5wqgif.gif

Want to get around to Vikings... and what the hell am I talking about again?

Oh yeah, Shinsekai Yori. I think you'll enjoy that one.

If one has watched Breaking Bad, then it's an obligatorigal duty to watch The Sopranos or The Wire.

If you want some suggestions of excellent movies that derive away from the Hollywood tropes and instead seek to strive for deep and compelling storytelling devices. I'd be happy to oblige with some.

As for anime -- The thing with anime is that I find it difficult to get into some because usually they don't have what I'm looking for in an anime.

I'm finding time to get into Count of Monte Cristo, which is looking very promising now though. There's also an OVA, only high school boy and his girlfriend who's been called into an intergalactic war in space -- It elaborates on the effects of such a long-term relationship, where the premise itself is sort of overly-eerie-fantastical, I think it's acceptable because it drives the plot quite neatly, which in of itself is what I believe is among the most important things about a show's premise/setting.

Which is why I think Shinsekai Yori is for you. Or perhaps even better, Serial Experiments Lain.

Look, I can't be you and explain it properly. My analysis skills are subconscious at best, meaning, I kind of know when stuff is deep but can't get out the right words to say it :D and when I do it all comes out as an incoherent mess. But yeah, I'd really say give that a go. If I were thick as a castle wall I would have shat on Paranoia Agent calling it pretentious and out of this world, but far from it, I admit that I lost the message completely due to looking the opposite direction xD

As for the Sopranos. I have watched the first season and I loved it. Too bad I know it ends really dodgy, but I will give it a full run. As for the Wire, I haven't. I love all kinds of politics, even if its gang related (which is why the Godfather is diadjaidauaufhapufbaub.)

And I'd be interested in those films because so far, the only films I've watched (non-anime) and enjoyed was the Desolation of Smaug (and that's purely because it's based in Middle-Earth) and the LEGO Movie (and that's purely because it's a fantastic comedy with a nice message behind it.) And this is in an entire year.

I appreciate that -- But it's no secret that some people might not like stories, animes or games for the same reason I do. A good example could be Evangelion or Metal Gear Solid 2. Both of them try to do similar things with their respective genres, both are drenched in post modernism, and as a result, a lot of the story is derived into symbolism, metaphors, underlying themes and subtext. This is what usually labels stuff to be pretentious to people -- In the cinema world, I know director Lars Von Trier usually is labelled as pretentious with his otherwise excellent artfilms, in my opinion of course, and insistence on not using aritifical aids, like special effects or any of that to convey the story he wants to tell. In the world of cinema -- This film-making method is called Dogme 95.

But anyway, back to anime -- I'm gonna try to post my thoughts on the recent stuff I've seen soon. The OVA should be a no-brainer since it's only 25 minutes. That one will be first, then of course I'll promise to do that Bebop analysis.
Going to spoiler tag the next bit so as not to derail too much.

Certainly, I'll PM some good ones that are worth watching. Probably some TV-shows too!

Thanks for that Chris :-)

And as for David Lynch.

As a Deadly Premonition fanboy who goes around telling people who asks his name that he's Francis York Morgan and you should call him 'York' because everybody else does...

I am obliged... no, I am bound by oath of blood and coffee that one day in the near future...

I will watch Twin Peaks.

Good, good -- Btw, did you ever play Alan Wake? While the game might not be subtle in any shape or form in regards to the influence of Steven King, there's certainly a lot of Twin Peaks in that one too. But I knew, that if I mentioned Lynch you'd be able to recall York. Agent Cooper's fascination for a good cup of coffee and surreal dream sequences are certainly things they have in common, hehe :)

Yep. I played Alan Wake and I loved it. Yes, you're right, subtlety is not its thing when it comes to King. I mean, jaysus H bloody christ, the entire setting is from a King novel. But they way they dealt with the story was brilliant.

One of the first lines of the game is Wake making a direct reference to Steven King -- It's about as subtlely implemented as a chimpanzee in the back of an old Citroen.

I also like how your current avi even looks like a famous shot of Agent Cooper from Twin Peaks, drinking a cup of coffee.

Oh yeah, and he must have at least said "like a Stephen King novel" 8 times xD

As for my avi.

Too bad it's Yang Wenli... and *gasp*

He hates coffee :-(

But nothing (well maybe until I watch Twin Peaks) will beat my York and his "F.K... in the coffee!"

That game needs a series, or an anime, Whatever, I just need more York in my life :D

That 'dancing' episode in Evangelion was brilliant.

Btw, am I to assume that Evangelion really started the whole 'adult' anime thing. Well... like, Ghost in the Shell etc...

But what about LotGH? Its first episode aired in 1988, or was it not that popular?

Just finished Psycho Pass. I can see why some people thought it kinda peaked early, like in episode 15-16, cause god damn those two episodes were brilliant. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the series, loved that second opening, and cannot wait for Season 2 to premiere in October.

So, let me get this straight.

Season 2 is season 1 but extended?

Probably going with Shinsekai Yori now after Gosick, it's either that one or Nisemonogatori. Both are very tempting and it's more a question of what to watch first of these two.

Hahaha, hell no. Captain Harlock, Casshern, Golgo 13, etc. are damn old (70's 60's iirc), most contemporary seinens are adapted from older material aswell (like Paprika).

Extended cut is extended (and it's already on episode 9 out of 11), Season 2 is Season 2 (and it's coming in October).

@Bro

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS! That's how I decide all my life choices anyway :D

@Puddi

Coolios! :-)

@Khayness.

Yeah, thought it was strange.

Loving the anime so far, though.

And Shinji just can't get enough accidental babes in his life.

But so far these last two episodes were a lot 'lighter.' I suppose the heavier stuff will return again later.

It falls apart really at the latter part of the second half, when Hideaki Anno started trolling the otaku fandom out of spite. :D

Oh, and the budget ran out. I can't stress that enough. The whole show is like when you halfass a paper due tomorrow, hoping you won't fail, but somehow your teacher finds it extraordinary and gives you an A+ and tells everyone else this is how it's done.

I don't blame them on the budget.

Every episode has been top-notch in quality so far. And there's been a great fight in every one.

So yeah, not surprised there.

Personally, I'm very bias against FMA. I just can't help BUT compare it to the manga and Brotherhood and while I do respect the crew trying to do their own thing, their own thing just does not hold up compared to Hiromu Arakawas work.

If you record your face while watching the schooltrip episode, go with Shinsekai Yori pretty please.

Shinsekai Yori is reaaaaaaaallly good.

And it has a brilliant soundtrack.

One thing though, it's not a story about the characters, rather, it's a story about the setting with characters being there for the POV.

But the characters are really good too.

@House.

I'll probs watch the original once I stop re watching FMAB.

Which will be like never.

But MAYBE it'll happen.

My big issue is the fact that FMA end left too many questions and in order to get them answered you had to watch a godawful movie. Manga/Bortherhood ending did not have this issue.
