Well, much like Sons of Liberty -- EVA brings out the worst in people simply because of its subversion towards common tropes in entertainment and narrative. That's putting it in simple terms, anyway. You either hate or you love it, or you're somewhere in the middle. I think I'm mostly in the middle, but slightly leaning towards 'really liking it'.

Haven't watched a dub in a while

There's only one character I don't particularly care for in this dub -- But that's not so much the actor as it is the character being not that interesting. He's one of the High Schoolers and he's voiced by Mr Generic himself. But you got the frickin Crispy-Freeman as Shizuo and Bosch as the villanois, Joker-like, chaotic Izaya and Kari Wahlgren's smooth voice as the headless motorcycle rider, Celty. It's quite awesome. Oh, and there's Steve Blum too! One musn't forget Steve Blum, especially when he doesn't use that tiring Space Marine voice of his.

I'm with the "The ending is kind of weak" crowd on Evangelion... <spoiler> the show was fairly entertaining and all, but to get all hyper literal and academic with a collage of confusing imagery smelled like a copout. It was always fundamentally a mecha, not necessarily your standard Gundam Seed mecha, but still a mecha. Whenever I see split opinions on Evangelion I'm like well maybe that's because it's literally a split series. I recall eps. 22 being pretty fascinating, for example, so it has some interesting moments and some very not so interesting ones (i.e. the ending). It's not all amazing or all bad, for that reason, IMO.

 

That's not just Evangelion though, I can't like any trick, gimmick or otherwise cop-out ish endings, such as Sopranos, etc.

Oi, don't you diss Sopranos, son -- Anyway, your opinion is fair and well-documented, and while I might not necessarily agree I can also say that I don't particularly see Evangelion as a pinnacle of storytelling, as much I might hold other stories in higher regard. I recognize what Evangelion did though and the effect it had on animation to come as much as Bebop, Akira or anything by Miyazaki. Getting overly analytically about something I like is just how I do things, when I feel something has struck me enough for me to consider time to decipher it and understand the meaning. Evangelion evidently had plenty of references to psychology and human philosophy, to count me intrigued. People can take that for what they will.

I'm also going to have to side with Chris on the Sopranos. Well I've heard quite a few people get upset or write off the endings I think there is a *lot* more to it then at first meets the eye. I like endings that drive the theme home in a meaningful way. They don't necessarily have to have a huge twist or anything but I get upset when an ending feels generic and/or doesn't really add anything to the story (queue rant on Steins;Gate)

 

Anyways I wanted to do this a few days ago but didn't get much of a chance..
