Guys, cut it with the massive quote trees. Or else the line comes to an end...

Anytime I try to cut a quote down a forum bug or something makes my post look off.:?

Neon Genesis. You know what's wrong with that show?

-Shinji whining 90% of the time

-More giant mechs fighting. I f*cking hate mechs. I will not watch an anime that centers around it. All the philosophical exposition in the world cannot save an anime from two giant robots bashing each other.

I will wander off for a second. Do Japanese love cats more than dogs?

It certainly feels so with the Neko and Nyan-nyan thing all around.

Also, anime art resembles cats. With all those tiny noses and sharp eyes... (whilst western cartoons more often resemble dogs??)

They have a lot of cat myths in folklore like this.

Satoshi Kon did everything right, in my opinion, but his masterwork remains Paranoia Agent.

Kon is one of my favorite. I think PA shows a drop in quality a few episodes in, like he just left the studio and said "I'll be back for the ending." But then parts of it are brilliant, like the gossiping ladies, and the woman who has a split personality as a call girl.

Some Geth, you probably need to brace yourself for Sasuke to be redeemed. After all Naruto still thinks that he's still a good friend, even after he piledrived him face first to the ground from atop a cliff. Not to mention the other numerous times he has attempted to kill pretty much everyone who has gotten in his way. Just the power of friendship man. I can only imagine the abusive relationship if Sasuke hooks up with Sakura in the end.

Kishimoto has quite literally lost the plot when it comes to the main characters he's created. Yet I still read the damn thing every week, just hoping that maybe he does the unthinkable, and ignores the massive Sasuke fanbase, and makes him get punished for all he's done... Doubt it's gonna happed though, so I'll just keep self flagellating myself while reading it.

Oh I have, even if Sasuke dies I will still call Naruto a bad series but if he is redeemed the series is going down the poop hole.=]

@eroeru maybe it is Finnish, i was going by an interview with the Madhouse director Rintaro where he said that he was an animator on the show. And after checking Wikipedia i have no idea which Moomin series i saw so disregard that.

The symbolism was mostly far-fetched, that much I can give you. And it got worse with the re-makes.

But the heavy metaphorical stuff in character action/interaction is still there. Also the whole feel of it. Yes, it's insane. It's also fantastic.

Stating having content relating to philosophy (or history of philosophy in whole) to be pretentious is somewhat a matter of preference, certainly. But it's mostly an uneducated statement, still.

Does anybody have something about seinen? I for one am a bit tired of talks about shonen.

We can discuss this till the end of forewever, but it wont' change my oppinion.

If you enjoy the last few episodes and se some great depth and worth in them - more power to you.
I don't. And I generally acknogledge greatness where I see it, even if I don't like it. I cna totally hate a movie/book/anime but still see great worth in it.

NGE does nothing for me at all.

A character with sheer determination is a better selling point than a character who's simply more powerful as far as I'm concerned. Also, I've never gotten the hate for "indecisive" characters.
And, one has gotta love childish, "pure-hearted" chars, having particularly Goku in mind...

Not really. There's a fine line to everything.

Determinators that have nothing but power of friendship and pure-heart go on my nerves. Almost all of the main protagonists of such battle shonen are the same. Naruto, Luffy, Goku - they all fall into the same pattern.
They are boring, Mary Sue characters. Scrappies.

Also, the "if you want it hard enough" and "training will get you everything" is so naive and cringe-inducing.

Some of my favorite anime have Mecha (Vision of Escaflowne, Macross)

Good thing none of the characters you said save for Naruto have the power of friendship or are pure-hearted or are Mary Sue characters. Hell Luffy and Son Goku are kind of stupid but cool jerks if anything.

And what is wrong with hard work to get what you want? everyone I know with a brain does that.

Cool?

They are stupid and navie and irritating. I see nothing cool about them. And they are the "determinator" type characters and they do suffer from the "designated hero" syndrome.

Hard work works up to a point. But in these shows it usually has no limits.

First things first get off TV Tropes it's bad for you.

Yeah they are stupid like I said, it is part of their charm. As for being naive, that one is a bit hard to say with Luffy but I am going with no he is not, because of reasons like that fact he knew what Vivi was doing was stupid to the point he even agrees with Crocodile about it. Luffy knows himself very well and the small times when he is naive he grows past it. Now Son Goku is naive because he is a main character of a gag series.:innocent:

Them being irritating is just opinion.

And yeah they are the "determinator" type I don't really see why that is bad, can you point out any time them being like that got in the way? Now for the 'designated hero" thing don't they have to be "heroes" to begin with?=]

We do know the limits, the hard work in One Piece is paying off now right?

1. Being an determinator cna get very bad and boring.

2. Designated hero means exactly like that. He is a hero, but it's so obivous it hurts. The main bad will ALWAYS be reserved for the designated hero (even whe there's a team/band). Everyone will be concerned over the designated hero and everything will revolve around him.

3. Hard work that goes beyond redicolous. Of the kind where you get superhuman powers and abilitites just by working hard. No magic or anytnig.

As for irritating. Let's just say there are some characters I'd like to grab by the head and introduce them to a cheese grinder.

One more thing... Did you watch the show dubbed or subbed?
I ask this because one of my friends, who also likes the show mentioned that the dub actually had Shinji whining unto irritating the hell out of him so that he couldn't watch a single episode.

Let's start with Dragon Ball being a Comic Anime/manga!! It actually was beyond ridiculous. And it was good, 'twas planned that way. Over the top, funny and in moments very likeable, with a sort of childish enthusiasm that actually works. Besides Goku, I'm reminded only of Haruhi (in dub). No other character is like him much, in this particular way I have in mind.

Then you either have problems or are a bad bad person.

@eroeru Part of why I keep up with stuff for kids is because when I have kids I want them to have good things to read, things like One Piece would have made me a happy kid.;)

That sounds really nice.:)
But what if it's a girl? What of Josei and Shoujo? Would you try Fruits Basket, and later on Nodame Cantabile or Honey & Clover?
(these would be the best shoujo and josei ones in my opinion)

Or better yet, let the girl/boy choose for him/herself on what types of manga to read if she/he ever wanted to start read manga in the first place. And even though One Piece is pretty fluffy looking on the outside, it has some pretty graphic violence in it, so it's not really kid friendly.

I think Some Geth had in mind that there was a possibility to read such stuff in his household, as he owns lots of manga books.

And what I had in mind was directing the topic into the Josei and Shoujo area. Seinen and shonen are exhausted up at this point, it seems.

Thanks.

Well like Mystic dream said it is better to let the boy or girl pick what they want but I will still make sure they will read manga, it will be a dad rule or something.=]

And One Piece is great for kids ages 8+ more so if they are not dumb.

But still the shojo and josei you said are all great, Nodame Cantabile is even one of my favorites and the very first shojo Princess Knight by the great Osamu Tezuka is a must, Cardcaptor Sakura is great and Tramps Like Us(You're My Pet is the real name) is good too

Nana is the worst shojo.

@Soronnar I will get to you later.:P
