Hey! I'm not defending Shoe's char at all (and you never said that, but I'm clarifying here.) That dude was wobbly from day one. Like I said, I never really cared for GC after a few episodes but I just went a long with it with my brain switched off. So when Shoe became public a-hole number one, one the surface, it was far more entertaining for me than seeing him mope.
Sure. You're correct. And have successfully rolled your persuasion check. But it doesn't make him less detestable. But that wasn't your reason for arguing

Because he's Ikari. So it's expected.
That said I still think his 'blind eye' is a leap of the imagination. No matter how soft or weak of character you are, this goes to something primal. It would have been different if he bore a certain apathy towards his mother, but he didn't. His dysfunctional family isn't so uncommon to find. It would have been different if he has only abandoned him. Of course he would want to maintain that illusion of normality. But after his mother was murdered you instinctively bear a grudge on the murderer, no matter who he/she is.
But like you said, it's believable. But not without its faults.
Also, it takes him way too long a time to reach there, and there is nothing in between to compensate. Usually character development has its "zig zags" (if you can imagine a line chart for a second) before it reaches a certain stage.
