Fairy Tail is a mixed bag. It has some powerful arcs, nice bonds with people and rather good morals that are taken up, but the show is repetitive as hell! It's very cliched with cheesy, overused dialogue and typical characters you'd find in your usual shonen. Character development is very poor. Most of the time, the one who is always in the limelight is Natsu, the overpowered, hotheaded idiot friend who everybody loves so much. I mean, sure the other characters get to fight too, but they always get the ones who are sidekicks or followers even if they are characters who are supposedly stronger than Natsu. Just ugh!

 

I call that the "Reserved For Hero" trope. In that the big enemies might as well have that plastered on their head, because it doesn't matter how much more sense it would make for someone else to fight the Big Bad, it has to be the MAIN PROTAGONIST.

Another character has power/skill better suited for the fight?

another characters has more reasons/better motivations?

another character thematically or plot-wise fits better?

Thank yooooou! Since SSY is doing so well with me I've been super careful about looking for soundtracks. Wouldn't want to ruin a perfect moment because I had happened to hear a track before while looking for another

 

 

Not sure what to watch after SSY but luckily I got a few days until I need to know that

Anyway yeah... after SSY? Well, that all depends on what you feel like watching

 

Besides, like me, I bet you have more than enough to choose from

 

I'm thinking of something that's farily lengthy. Not LotGH long but maybe 50-60 episodes. Code Geass worked well with 25+25 episodes. I got a few shows to pick from like Soul Eater and Eureka Seven. LotGH is something I'll watch but that's probably closer to winter when I'll have a ton more time on my hands than I'll have for the coming 6 or so weeks

SSY's soundtrack I definitely hold very close to my heart for sure. I kind of liken it to Sawano's works in that they both know how to use different genres of music to pull out different sorts of atmosphere (AKA They're not exactly the best to put on before bed if you have a busy mind ). Which reminds me... I really do need to prod myself into finally starting Aldnoah cause Gen and Sawano together is too much hnnnnnnnghing than I can handle.

 

Had a little bit of a lol moment when I just double checked the song Rah requested. Sim, you were completely right on it and I'm going to slip into spoilers for why I laughed. Rah, please don't look til you finish 25...

I actually forgot that Sad Separation is used before the "fiend" end-game of 25. I know the song registered with me back in 10 but it didn't emotionally traumatize me til Kiroumaru's death, so that point is where the song is engrained in my memory.

That's one thing I absolutely loved about the last chunk of the series. Kirou's motivations kept me guessing right up until Saki's plan was put in place. Because of the far earlier situation where he had the option to turn them over to the Committee but let them go free, I was wondering if that was going to screw them over later. That 0:58 second mark of Sad Separation kiiiiills me emotionally no matter how many time I listen to it, since that's the point where he's torn apart. Great character, especially when it comes to showing the difference between... human and queerat cultures (ugggggh, still such a difficult sentence to write once you know the final twist ).

 

Since apparently I also just kind of feel like rambling about the series a bit and never did out in the actual forum, I'm going to make a little tangent about what I consider to be one of the best antagonists I've ever encountered: Squealer. Yup, that sneaky little bugger rates *very* high up there for me. Now most of this tangent Isi already knows cause  I wall of texted him but all this got me thinking about it again. See, when I was watching it, I was keeping him updated on where I was in the series and he mentioned that I had already met the series antagonist and never once did my mind go to Squealer. He also told me that a lot of people had issues when the series spent a lot of time on the queerats instead of focusing purely on Cantus users. For me, that's exactly where the knowledge that the series is based on a novel starts to really shine.

 

Because after the fact, things shifted back to Saki's group, their inner workings and how their own society works. There were so many little breadcrumbs sprinkled around as hints that the queerats were going to play a bigger part in everything but imho it was handled absolutely brilliantly. I honestly thought that after the class trip and such, their arc was finished and the series antagonist was going to be a cantus user (now of course you could include the 'fiend' in all this but she was more a means to an end). I didn't start getting really bad feelings in the back of my mind til episode 15 (and let me tell you, that episode gave me a sense of dread when it came time to learn the fate of the tribe's queen). When the time finally came for Squealer to be outed as the one behind everything that was built along over the years that we were now seeing the plan play out, I realized something. His whole scheme hinged on the fact that humans (or shall I say Cantus users) went about their lives and merely looked down on queerats or didn't acknowledge them as a threat. In saying that, me, the viewer, had done the very thing that made his plan so successful come the last arc. I figured everything with the queerats was wrapped up and so they went under my own mental radar of trying to piece things together.

 

Honestly I can't applaud that enough. There are series where the antagonist comes out of left field at the end and I can't help but frown but the parts were all put in place all throughout the series, I just didn't consider the right angle. Sometimes it feels wrong to call him an antagonist though, even considering his actions. Like you mentioned with Kirou, Sim, the series handles greys in a way that you can look at the motivations and understand both sides. His final moment with Saki, where Going Home plays for the last time is probably one of the most powerful scenes for me that I can think of in recent years, and you can bet I was an emotional wreck as it played out.

 

I really hope all that made sense. I haven't exactly given the analytical part of my brain a jog in a while and coffee is still working to wake me up. Not going to deny the fact that it's also making me want to re-watch the series again... If you ever have to ask why my to watch list never seems to go down, it's the same reason my gaming backlog is huge. I tend to run back to things I love way more than starting something new.

Is Joseph going to do anything cool? I mean, he's had his moment, but so far he's just been his goofy ol' self. We haven't seen much of his badass side from Battle Tendency.
