[Vroom Vroom]

Watched 2 episodes on Nozaki-Kun. It wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary if it wasn't really good at what it wants to do. That's why it shines, methinks.

 

I might pick Nozaki-Kun up after I'm done with Toradora! Heard enough good about it to peak my interest

You both have me interested in Nozaki-Kun now. I think I'll wait until its run has finished to watch it, I'd hate to get started and have to wait for the new episodes to come out.

I think the style is subjective as long as the art is good.

 

One Piece's art isn't your 'normal anime' stuff (i,e Gintama) but its art is brilliant.

 

For such a catroony show it ain't bad. And it's at least consistent more or less. Guess it alos depends on the scene. I really hate Luffy tough.

 

But Clannad.. man, things (eyes, nose) aren't even in the right position. Character design is just plain UGLY. (still a powerfull anime)

 

In general I don't like very much art stlyes where everyone is the same (with just different hair color) (are giganourmeous eyes)

 

I can stomach bad art if the story is good tough.

I thought Gintama's style was pretty generic. I liked it for that reason. I mean, all you have to do is swap Toshi's hair with Gin-san and there you have it, they look exactly the same. The same goes for Shinpachi and Sogou expect for the colour of the hair and eyes.

 

Yup, but at least it has normal proportions.

Episode 15 and 16 continued on the already remarkable success story that SSY has become with me. There are so many gems in these two episodes alone that it wouldn't be possible for me to mention or even remember them all right now. Can always start with the Queerats.. they are not the simple beasts that they at first acted like nor are they up to any good. Squealer didn't have a hard time getting what he wanted from Saki and Satoru but I know he's up to something. They already got concrete and who knows what else they might've learned by now. I'm going to give Satoru for his idea that the Queerats might aim to replace humans and become the top of the food chain. At least they are not content with stagnation!

Secondly with Maria and Mamoru leaving things hav changed up a great deal once more and with only Saki and Satoru left things might be prone to take a drastic turn in the coming episodes, especially since another timeskip seems to be coming. Also the dream Saki had with the boy telling her to not aid Maria brings back memories of I think it was the first episode where Saki narrates that so many lives could've been saved if Maria had never been born or something like that. It's curious for certain and I might have an idea of what "might" happen but honestly at this point it's only one of a thousand possible routes that the show can take.

That's one thing I absolutely loved about the last chunk of the series. Kirou's motivations kept me guessing right up until Saki's plan was put in place. Because of the far earlier situation where he had the option to turn them over to the Committee but let them go free, I was wondering if that was going to screw them over later. That 0:58 second mark of Sad Separation kiiiiills me emotionally no matter how many time I listen to it, since that's the point where he's torn apart. Great character, especially when it comes to showing the difference between... human and queerat cultures (ugggggh, still such a difficult sentence to write once you know the final twist ).

 

Since apparently I also just kind of feel like rambling about the series a bit and never did out in the actual forum, I'm going to make a little tangent about what I consider to be one of the best antagonists I've ever encountered: Squealer. Yup, that sneaky little bugger rates *very* high up there for me. Now most of this tangent Isi already knows cause  I wall of texted him but all this got me thinking about it again. See, when I was watching it, I was keeping him updated on where I was in the series and he mentioned that I had already met the series antagonist and never once did my mind go to Squealer. He also told me that a lot of people had issues when the series spent a lot of time on the queerats instead of focusing purely on Cantus users. For me, that's exactly where the knowledge that the series is based on a novel starts to really shine.

 

Because after the fact, things shifted back to Saki's group, their inner workings and how their own society works. There were so many little breadcrumbs sprinkled around as hints that the queerats were going to play a bigger part in everything but imho it was handled absolutely brilliantly. I honestly thought that after the class trip and such, their arc was finished and the series antagonist was going to be a cantus user (now of course you could include the 'fiend' in all this but she was more a means to an end). I didn't start getting really bad feelings in the back of my mind til episode 15 (and let me tell you, that episode gave me a sense of dread when it came time to learn the fate of the tribe's queen). When the time finally came for Squealer to be outed as the one behind everything that was built along over the years that we were now seeing the plan play out, I realized something. His whole scheme hinged on the fact that humans (or shall I say Cantus users) went about their lives and merely looked down on queerats or didn't acknowledge them as a threat. In saying that, me, the viewer, had done the very thing that made his plan so successful come the last arc. I figured everything with the queerats was wrapped up and so they went under my own mental radar of trying to piece things together.

 

Honestly I can't applaud that enough. There are series where the antagonist comes out of left field at the end and I can't help but frown but the parts were all put in place all throughout the series, I just didn't consider the right angle. Sometimes it feels wrong to call him an antagonist though, even considering his actions. Like you mentioned with Kirou, Sim, the series handles greys in a way that you can look at the motivations and understand both sides. His final moment with Saki, where Going Home plays for the last time is probably one of the most powerful scenes for me that I can think of in recent years, and you can bet I was an emotional wreck as it played out.

 

I really hope all that made sense. I haven't exactly given the analytical part of my brain a jog in a while and coffee is still working to wake me up. Not going to deny the fact that it's also making me want to re-watch the series again... If you ever have to ask why my to watch list never seems to go down, it's the same reason my gaming backlog is huge. I tend to run back to things I love way more than starting something new.

 

Sorry for the late response to this. I did read it yesterday but I wanted to wait until I was ina  bit better state of mind to attempt to respond. Sorry if my thoughts are a bit all over the place as well.

What I find amusing and ironic about Kirou is well I agree that his character was great for showing the differences between the queerat and human cultures he also bears a striking resemblance to humans in terms of his physical build which is in part what leads to the conclusion with the messiah. It's just one little addition to the theme "what does it mean to be human?" the series had ongoing throughout the series.

 

The thing is we see Queerats get killed off like nothing and we think nothing of it, the characters think nothing of it because they're so focused on their own survival. For the audience one characters life outweighs that of any queerat who appear to be lesser beings in the lore compared to the humans and much less of a threat then threats such as the fiend or the karmix demons. And yet the thing that threatened them most, the being that could have potentially wiped out their entire race lost her life because of 1 single queerat losing it's life to her. I admit I find that whole bit with Kirou and the messiah at the end to be incredibly well thought out and a beautiful way to help drill in that final point (as everything in that final episode did) of showing us the folly of looking at the queerats as lesser to begin with.

 

I know I've rambled to you several times about this already Ani but one of my favorite moments in the series looking back is when Saki originally saved Squnk as a child from drowning. In the manga she sees a creature drowning and immediately attempts to save it despite there being rules against using powers to effect the queerats in anyway, however once she sees the creature she saves she tries to immediately leave in disgust at it's appearance proclaiming that she could never see one of them as being human (oh the sweet sweet irony..) I love that the story spends the rest of the series just screwing with that line and flipping Saki's understanding (or rather lack of) of the situation on it's head. It was also perfect at showing Saki as being someone with a moral core that goes beyond rules, as well as having a bit of an ignorant, if not very human and understandable view of the situation.

 

I like that the story takes the time to show us our own flaws in how we viewed the situation and story to begin with through the queerats. Not many people watch the first arc and expect the queerats and Squealer to end up threatening the entire society the way they do. Which is what makes them such brilliant "villains" if there even is such a thing in that world.

 

And ftr you're not the only one with a gaming/show backlog that doesn't go down because of getting too obsessive over your favorite shows. 75% of my brainpower in the last couple weeks were put towards shows/games I finished ages ago that I can't stop obsessing over X3

 

Now excuse me well I go watch episode 25 again because holy **** is it amazing.

So I watched the latest Aldnoah.Zero

How many times is this show going to keep "killing" the same character. I can only see the same character die so many times before I just become numbed off to it. This will be the third time we've watched the princess "die" it seems to be becoming a thing.

 

I had to slow clap Slain there. He couldn't have messed up any worse. He ran into that battle with absolutely no clue on who's side he was on (personally I thought the right choice was obvious.. but eh) and got everyone killed (or so we think) as a result. Sure he couldn't have predicted where his actions would take him but he obviously didn't even attempt to think about it beforehand so I can't say I feel much sympathy for him. Curious as to how his Aldnoah drive powered on.

 

I'd give the first half a 6.5/10. It's entertaining and has some cool moments but as it stands it really hasn't done much for me yet. I'm not very invested in many of the characters atm, and some of them kind of annoy me. I do hope the 2nd half picks up a bit more as I still think it has the potential to be even more.
