The only reason I'm not at ch100 is because I've been fighting my urge to read it.

There's only 300 chapters.

That's nothing when you can burn through 10 chapters in 30min.

Plus chapters are released at a depressingly slow rate.

If you think the 1 month wait per SNK chapter is bad you have no idea what it's like to be a fan of Berserk.

The people complaining that George R R Martin releases his books to slowly have it pretty damn good compared to a Berserk fan.

Dub.

And go watch it next. Forget everything and just watch it.

Seriously.

Cowboy Bebop should be a standard for anybody who watches anime.

You just wait 'till he enters that Church.

THEN it's when Cowboy Bebop shows its true colours.

Alright, I'll take your advice and put it at the top of the list. I am going to finish Nozaki-kun first though, since I only have four episodes left of it.

I remember months ago, before I started posting regularly here, Dave of Canada mentioned Berserk and ranted on how slow it was xD

Yeah, I can guess it's pretty brutal, though lately it seems to be updating...

Speaking of updates. Hopefully Black Lagoon and Vagabond will get off their hiatus soon. It's been months (which BL being February and VB being January.) Though I can't complain about Vagabond, I only finished that recently. Must be hell for those who've had to wait since January.

Being a manga's fan is hard :'-(

You wont regret it. Bebop is a classic, just like FMAB. Very few people come out of it unsatisfied.

Bang.

I'll make sure to add that one to the list for some light-hearted anime time.

Ugh the computer ate my first reply. Anyway, yeah it definitely has some more light-hearted moments. That's one of the highlights of the show tbh. When it tries to be serious is where it falters, a lot (prepare not to be able to take the villain of the first season seriously, like, at all, though in season two he's developed a little bit more)

Season two has the same problem in that regard, but it does more with development of the main characters in some surprisingly good ways, and ends on a much stronger note that actually develops the antagonists and gives them (the main one at least) believable motivations. But you wouldn't be wrong to be under the impression that they're just as nonsensical as season 1's for the first 10 or so episodes, since all that development is stacked onto the end with only the most cryptic hinting at it beforehand. There's also some plot holes and/or ridiculous explanations of certain events, but nothing... incredibly terrible.

But yeah, the humor can be pretty good when that has more of the focus, though it can be a bit jarring how much the show switches focus sometimes.

On a bit of a shallower note, I just think some of the powers are kinda cool.

tumblr_mz4glmAQfq1ro861co1_r1_500.gif

Birthday is a pretty fun character. He triggers his electricity power by biting down on a taser.

I mostly agree although I think KLK was just an absurdly entertaining show.

I can't figure out for the life of me why Steins;Gate is as well received as it is http://myanimelist.n...253/Steins;Gate  I mean I can see why people like it but how can it make any top 10 list? What specifically did they do that raises them so far above any other story? I have yet to hear anyone actually attempt to go into an in-depth explanation as to what specifically makes it so good but apparently enough people think it is for it to be voted far ahead of just about every other anime made.

Don't worry. I don't understand why you guys like After Story so much.

Don't worry. I don't understand why you guys like Clannad so much.

Because it's a beautiful story that portrays human emotions and struggle through sh*tty stages of life almost perfectly. Clannad can't really be put down to season one or two. Clannad for me, will always be a 46 episode anime.

Chris wrote something on it some time ago. That guy always explains this stuff better. But that's basically the framework as to why I absolutely adore Clannad.

I can never really explain why I like things. It's horrible...

Like being constipated.

So that's why I just use slogans like "POLITICAL INTRIGUE" and "SOCIAL PHILOSOPHY" when talking about LotGH when I know there's so much more I could say but trying to form any sort of coherent explanation is MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA!!

So I've resigned myself the role of the bumbling idiot.

Well.. I am a bumbling idiot.

So basically I've just stuck with my other half.

1 reason and 1 reason only: The emotions. The stories in emotional animes tend to get more of a pass in those stories since it's not really the focus if you get my meaning. That said Clannad still is full of flaws and silliness, it's just that I can point to moments that had a genuine effect on me which is exactly what I wanted when I picked that anime.

Steins;gate is an engaging story but it's not being driven my the emotions enough to justify relying on those. I went into Steins;Gate looking for a good story and it failed in that sense, maybe my focus should have been on something else? I can understand a story being well received even though it has flaws if it pushes the bar of what it is trying to do in some way shape or form and in that sense there's *NOTHING* I felt Steins;Gate did above average other then having an engaging middle.

Maybe I should have said it differently, I understand the reasons you like it but I do not feel any of that.

@Sim's edit

Hey, you do a better job of expressing yourself than I could most of time.

Which is completely fair.

My thing is I don't even understand why people like Steins;gate *as much as they do* at all. I've seen plenty of reviews raving about how great it is and how it's a masterpiece but I can't say I've heard any reason as to why it would be so highly rated or why it's so great.

This thread is getting a bit tense.

Enjoy.

I'm going to bed.

Oh, and yeah, Clannad has its flaws. Funnily enough, what I thought was its biggest flaw, was actually something I've come to admire as not only an excellent development for Tomoya's character but a beautiful metaphor to boot. Now when I think about it, it's almost the most touching moment in Clannad, despite being riddled with ambiguity.

My largest complaint would be Season 1's 'harem.' But it did serve for fantastic comedy. Yeah, Clannad can be hilarious in a good way. I would say 'adult' but it feels too pretentious, but I can't find another word for it. Maybe a more refined sense of humour? Especially when it comes to Akio. That man is a laugh, every word he says is f*cking gold.

Eg, this scene.

A single grunt and I'm rolling on the floor laughing xD LOOK AT HIS FACE

Then again, I'm the largest Tolkein nut in the forum (maybe) and I can easily point out one flaw in the books and that's like 70% of his characters. Aside from the ones that REAAALY stand out (Gollum, Sam, Frodo etc) the rest are lacklustre and their dialogue is hit and miss.

Though I have to say, the Council of Elrond will forever be one of my favourite chapters in any book ever

I can understand why you don't like it, and some of your criticism's absolutely have merit. I think its a fool's errand you're on, its not a masterpiece. But what is really when you get down to it.

I did like Ushio though.

You're right in that nothing is really a masterpiece (in any other way but subjectively at least). I'm asking why people specifically feel this deserves to be in the top 10 animes list or as highly rated as it is? My line of thinking is that in order for people to like it as much as they have this one there must be some point(s) that they feel justify holding it to such a high regard.

All my criticism can be rendered invalid to a person who just doesn't care about the same points I do, and that's fine. I'd still like to know by what standards this can be called a masterpiece though (not saying you called it that, but many have). I don't have to agree with that standard (infact I'm pretty certain I probably wouldn't) but I would still like to understand what that standard actually is. it comes back to what I asked on the last page (I'll repeat it and please understand this is a genuine and serious question) what specifically does steins;gate do that raises it above other animes and other stories of similar genre?

It's more important that I understand why someone feels the way they do then it is for me to have to agree with them.

P.S. night Sim

Spoiler

I have a feeling that the next part is going to focus much more heavily on what precisely the Aldnoah power is and how it works. It felt like they purposely were being vague about it.

I don't know if anyone here has been watching Re:_Hamatora or even watched the first season, but I actually liked it a fair bit more than the first one. Which isn't necessarily saying a lot, but I shouldn't lie too much since I did check out the second season anyway.

Basically a superpower anime, but not as obnoxiously ripping off X-men as Tokyo ESP.

It's been on my list ever since someone said it's like if persona fucked darker than black.

I think it was because of the art style over the story telling. I will say that the opening gives me that sort of feel. What with the glasses and the headphones and such.

I did think once that it reminded me of Persona just in terms of the use of color in the art style compared to P4G's promo art stuff, but I don't know anything about Persona to be any less superficial than that with the comparison.

I would have said it's like a more light hearted and generally not as good Darker than Black. Really if you haven't watched that first, you should totally watch that first, it's great.

Yeah I'd recommend that to anybody. I recommended that to somebody who hates anime and only watches Sailor Moon, didn't even care. She blew it off.

what specifically does steins;gate do that raises it above other animes and other stories of similar genre?

<Spoilers> I'd still say Moeka, to be honest. Of course, we already talked about that. I think just from your perspective it was about how overwhelmingly fragile and psychotically devoted she was from the downsides, but I think I just looked at those same qualities with some degree of interest and fascination. It's kind of a weird analogy but <spoilers> in Valkyria Chronicles Selvaria was extraordinarily devoted to the emperor Maximillian because he saved her from kind of the.oppression, and she romantically fell for him, such that she ultimately was willing to commit suicide for his cause. It's a kind of devotion that is sort of crazy but also kind of fascinating. I feel like Moeka is in her own whole world, and I'm straining to find her attention but because she is so distant I'm like whoa now I want to now about her even more. There are obvious dangers but also incredible strengths in her character, and there was also a kind of a necessity factor in her case.

I re-watched some random Stein's Gate amv to make sure I still thought it was pretty cool, honestly, it is kind of tame in many ways I think because it's so directly referential to things like memes and cos play, it's artificially been given more credence. I'm sure there are a decent number of actual scientists who are anime fans into Gurren Lagann or something, but this is like they're literally showing scientists doing science things and so they're throwing logic out the window and pinning it as #1.

Overall, I would probably put Stein's Gate around 10-13 or something, not #1. Something like Geass would crush it.

It's not. Only on paper, not in actual execution. And I wouldn't consider its darker themes to be that dark actually, but that's probably because I've seen too much twisted stuff already.

Season 1's villain was stupid and the ending was a massive copout, I've pretty much forgotten about that season 2 is out already, can't say anything about that. Better go check it out soon then.

I've read somewhere that its a multimedia project, so the anime continues from the manga, which explains why they are hasty with character introductions and why it is hard to care about them when the story gets going. Now you know.
