Question, considering jumping into Spice & Wolf. What is this show about, exactly? o.O

 

In one word?

 

Economics.

 

But in more than one word?

 

Best watch it yourself. Probably one of the best (at least top 5) romance anime there is. The characters are rich and the chemistry between them is key to the quality of the anime.

 

I could go on and on... but I'll just say it straight.

 

If a stiff neck like Lotion (sorry dude xD you know I love you) can like it, it sure as hell ain't some ecchi hentai nonsense with 'panty shots' and 'furry ears' for the sake of stupid fan service.

 

It's brilliant.

 

And the opening is sex for the ears.

I often wondered if ASoIaF is as good as it is due to Martins love of history. It seems like a great quality to have for people interested in world building. I know many of the plot points are based off of real world history (like the Red wedding)

 

Also on a quick side note, Breaking Bad.. theres a show that had integrity and was willing to make decisions for the good of the overall narrative. Imagine if Breaking Bad had the mentality most shows seem to have nowadays of "we'll just keep going with the story until people stop watching it"

 

Nope, instead they decided it was time to end it because they told the story they wanted to tell and as a result I know I'll remember it much better then half the other series I've watched in the last few years. Stories that have a purpose and are thought out to convey a message tend to have much more impact as a result then the ones done just for entertainment.

Often it feels like they're just pulling plot points out of their asses and trying to make it fit the themes as an afterthought *cough* ME3 *cough* A good story should be one you can look at from many angles independent of the authors intent. I especially like when a story can have a theme that you notice that may not have been intended but the story can remain consistent with which requires the author to be a decent world and character builder imo.

 

It's great when people can take their own meanings from a work, just not when it feels like they have to bend over backwards to make it work.

 

A genuinely well thought out grey situation like the one in SSY should be one that works under multiple PoV's. Which is often why many grey area situations often fail since some authors make it far too idealistic or focused on one way of looking at it.

 

Exactly my thoughts.

 

Of course there are works that are meant for a message. George Orewell and Steinbeck are key examples of authors who writing to critique society.

 

But then there's Tolkein, from, what I understand of him (via his letters, of which I've read few because they're so dull you could use it as a spoon) didn't write Middle-Earth because he wanted to tell people 'this and that.' In fact, he wrote it because he wanted a world where his own language could live in. And yet, LOTR is FILLED with metaphors and symbolism but Tolkein never intended it.

 

Especially allegory. He disliked it.

“I cordially dislike allegory in all its manifestations, and always have done so since I grew old and wary enough to detect its presence. I much prefer history – true or feigned– with its varied applicability to the thought and experience of readers. I think that many confuse applicability with allegory, but the one resides in the freedom of the reader, and the other in the purposed domination of the author.”

Breaking Bad certainly will remain one of TVs most endorsed and beloved series. I do hope in the future people will still feel that way and we wont have pretentious hippies trying to tear down its qualities by stating nonsense such as "oh, it's overrated blah blah f*cking blah."

 

ASOIAF is really a lovechild of historical fiction and fantasy. Or that's what Martin calls it. His inspiration comes from the series Accursed Kings (which I recommend to anybody btw, there are currently two books left to re-publish.) So yes, the historical parallels are pretty evident to, and he doesn't try to hide them.

I love how different Tolkein and Martin are and yet how much they're compared. Most people I talk to have no idea what the authors motivations are or intended themes behind these series, which again I think is a testament to just how well written they are and how many ways you can look at the same story and still have that view be consistent regardless of the authors intention.

 

I actually didn't know ASoIaF was inspired by Accursed Kings. That's pretty neat. I'll have to look that one up as soon as I get a chance.

Sim already told you what it was about, so I'll just go ahead and tell you that the characters in it and the voice acting is fantastic. Holo is the greatest, her voice is perfect and she is the strongest female that I have ever seen in any medium. I recommend it.

Martin certainly has become a pillar for the fantasy genre. And good on him. Even his worst (AFFC) is still pretty damned amazing.

 

Accursed Kings, huh? Well, I'll tell you one thing.

 

They're just as addicting ;-)

 

If it weren't for Martin they'd be impossible to find in English, he's republishing them all :D

 

There are 7 books, but don't bother. Just get the 6. The last has nothing to do with the rest.

I'll check them out, although my reading backlog is a bit longer then I'd like atm too (One day I'll finish you The Brothers Karamazov.. one day..)

 

 

For Berserk a lot changes in the story. There's a reason I say your pretty much still on the prologue. So much epicness ahead of you.. you don't even know.

 

Just curious, did you already read the part that deals with that demon in the picture you just linked? Like where it shows what happens with him?

The eclipse... yeah... have fun with that part dude X3

 

You should have some idea of what it is, although seeing it and hearing about it are 2 very different things. If you want to talk about a story willing to get fucked up in order to further the plot and themes then Berserk is the crowned king of that thanks to that one moment.

 

I have not read the Silmarillion although I am familiar with it. My mom actually read the Hobbit and LotR to me as a child so even my experience with those books you could say is a bit limited.

As for the Silmarillion... well I was hoping we could gush over the biggest let-down in history... but in a good way.

 

The Battle of Unnumbered Tears.

 

Let's think of it as a Rocky Fight... expect before Rocky seems to be winning, the Russian dude tears his throat out and begins to rape his corpse xD

 

The Silmarillion is at a whole different level of 'dark' compared to the Hobbit and LOTR.

 

It's also pretty damned epic as well

I'll look into reading it. I bought a copy of it for my sister for christmas a few years back, maybe she still has it and I can borrow it from her.

 

My mom is pretty awesome like that. We get into long conversations about stories like ASoIaF to this day and I think she actually has pretty good taste in stories too. I have no doubt whatsoever that the main reason I read so much as a child was due to her constantly pushing me to read, which was a bit annoying at the time, but I'm actually grateful for in the long run. I remember curling up and listening to her read the hobbit and having a freaking blast with it even though I was too young to understand a lot at the time.

 

Reading books like The Incarnations, or the Magic of Xanth, or the Drizzt books as a child really opened my imagination. I doubt I'd be the same person I am today without those stories for me to become obsessive over. I think I was 9 when I read a Wrinkle in Time and I just remember falling in love with the story and just wanting to explore more and more worlds (A thirst I never truly sated tbh) Ah so nostalgic now..

 

P.S. I loved Rocky 4 haha...

 

 

Oh right... Anime... uhhhh..

My mum's similar. Though she never pushed me to read, or do much of anything, she always supported what I wanted to do. I really started this nerd thing at the age of five when I first watched LOTR. Like you, I don't think I'd be the same person I am today if I didn't watch it and instantly fall in love. Since then well... it's been slow, but hell, now all I do is live for narrative and stories. Games, books, manga, anime, TV etc... you can find them anywhere. So yeah, I'm glad I'm a nerd. And a freaking huge one at that.

 

P.S I love Rocky 4 too <3 xD

 

PP.S The Silmarillion is really reserved for Tolkein nuts. Its prose is dense and old fashioned. It reads more like a historical passage than a conventional novel :D

 

PPP.S I hope to Godoka that he murders the sh*t out of those Black Dog Knights. Just a few panels and I detest them.

Perhaps I should have used Martin since I'm more familiar.
 
ASOIAF has lots of things going for it. One of the more sensitive (and evident) topics it handles is feminism.
 
Now, to me, it's more to do with a result of the complexity he issues towards his characters and setting more than a concious level of critique. What I feel is happening there is that the critique against patriarchy and the issue of feminism spawns indirectly and consequently from the narrative rather than Martin knowingly writing sections here and there because he feels the need to address them.
 
What he wanted to do was to write a fantasy that mirrors history the best way he could. He wrote complex characters due to his profound understanding of the human condition and humans themselves and created a setting so vast as a result of his love for history and fantasy. And so, what came from that was all these social issues that he covers because the narrative demands it and not the other way round.
 
Basically, he wrote a story and the themes came after. He never said "I want to write about philosophy" and wrote a story to support it.


Hmm I was thinking of something a bit more specific since we were just talking about the little mermaid references with Sayaka. I'm sure that was deliberate now since her witch form is a freaking mermaid.  :lol: 

As far as feminism goes, I think feminism can be broken down fundamentally to being about equality, so yeah that might just arise from good quality writing that treats women like they're people and not plot devices. Someone who understands the human condition would naturally write strong female characters even if they didn't explicitly intend it to be feminist. I'm still not sure I'd call that unintentional though. Seems like maybe it's just intentional but the labels are all different.

First off I completely agree about the feminism remark.

 

But yeah, it's honestly one of the main reasons I'm so obsessive over Sayaka. The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian is a personal favorite of mine and I have no doubt her character is directly inspired by it. The Witch form really does push that point too.
