Oh alright! I'll just have to land first and continue to process exactly what happened. Also might've found a show to watch now when I'm done with SSY. Kinda considering  Ghost In a Shell and with the seasons having a decent number of episodes I'll reach the 45+ episode mark that I wanted.

The show was incredibly clever with how it gave me the pieces early but without context I could do very little with some of them. The "If Maria hadn't been born" one being the most prominent since at first it only did sound a bit omnious and afterwards with all the happy moments almost silly. That is until things actually started to change quickly and now that quote isn't too far from the "got you" moment in TRS. Doubt I'll encounter anything like that moment in a long time but it greatly pleases me that SSY managed to have something stick that well with me and something that I'll not forget in a long time.

Also one thing that I thought about a bit during work today as the demonic overlord of the universe are a few quotes from the characters, like Maria and "Sometimes the truth is the cruelest of them all" which sounds awesome by itself and when I put it besides the reveal at the end that queerats are more or less humans too then it really sound almost scary. This is one of many reasons why I love SSY. I get to put so many things together by myself and see the world grow even after the show is over.
Saki got a great quote in "We have to change our way of thinking if we really want to change the world" which just like Maria's quote sound awesome alone and with some context from certain scenes suddenly become far more potent.

Morning coffee hasn't quite kicked in yet so there's a good chance this will make minimal sense but here we go! SSY related on the point of dialogue Rah brought up above:

For as long as I watched the series, up until everything with the Messiah came to a head, that one line of dialogue regarding Maria played in the back of my mind. It's a fair bit emotionally charged for multiple reasons and considering Saki's relationship with Maria through the years, it's more than likely a thought that heavily weighs on Saki at the older age in which she writes the book we've heard her narrate all along.

 

Speaking of books, the whole reason I wanted to write this: In the novel, the point at which she first mentions the line plays out slightly differently. Saki explains in detail why her birth and thus existence is tied a bit more into Maria's. Saki was born first as we know, and one of those cases where the umbilical chord could have killed her before the actual birth happened. She survived and it gave the nurses in the village practice for such situations. Turns out the very same was true of Maria's birth, so thanks to Saki, the nurses knew just what to do when it came time to save Maria's life. It might just be a minor detail but there are a lot of little pieces like that in the novel that make reading it after the series both more fascinating and emotional, imho.

 

Regarding Berserk:

 

I've had a passing interest in it for ages now and Isi has thoroughly hyped it in the past (since he knows we share a love of certain types of stories). I'm still torn on it though in knowing how rapey it gets. Still undecided what I'll do with it because storytelling hype is a really good way to hook me. >___< Claymore being a bit of a toned down almost analogue to it likewise piqued my interest, though from what I gather there the manga is the far better choice between the manga and anime.

So regarding the ending of SSY

I agree with your feelings involving Saki. Her final choice is one which for me is incredibly powerful. Squealer causes a great deal of suffering to the people she cares about but Saki realizes he is not actually evil and in some sense his logic and understanding of the situation was depressingly correct. It's easy to say a better future should be one where you put personal emotions aside but to watch so many people you love and care about suffer and to to still be able to hold that sense of morality in such a grey world is a testament to Saki's strength. I honestly start to tear up anytime I watch or even think about Squealers death for too long because of it. I also agree that if the village ever hopes to have a better future it needs to be with with a leader like Saki who can handle the harsh truths of the world and yet still strive to do the right thing.

Squealer was such a magnificent villain in the story. When you first start out the Queerats are one of the least interesting aspects of the lore, you think nothing of then compared to threats like Fiends and Karmic Demons and yet with just an understanding of the situation one Queerat nearly managed to put the PK's on the brink of extinction. He's a perfect example of someone who came from nothing who if things had gone just a bit differently could have ended up being a revolutionary and hero to his people.

The Messiah was also an amazing character. Saki once commented that she could never imagine the queerats as humans and here was a walking example of one and to be reminded of people she had come to personally love and care about just drove the point in even deeper. And her ending was perfect. To her one Queerat life meant more then the entire PK race, which is fitting because from our perspectives we come to care about each character for more then we did the Queerats initially and yet that's really just a flaw in our own perception as well as social conditioning.

I'm on my phone ATM so I can't really do this series and the ending the justice it deserves but I did want to throw some thoughts out there for you until I can.

I'm really torn on how much I think you would like Berserk. There's some aspects of it that are really off putting the story has depth and I don't know many other people that could appreciate it's Love Craftian nature the way you could.

Might also like Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, though that show isn't finished and it appears it won't be in the future. Which is damn shame because the show is pretty good. So if one can deal with unfinished series and liked Spice and Wolf, this one is recommended too.

You know I adore Lovecraft and any sort of thing that successfully pulls off the cosmic horror vibe of his work (IE all my asfhaosfh about the Old Gods from WoW ), so that aspect most definitely appeals to me as far as Berserk is concerned. I mean don't get me wrong, you also know I appreciate worlds that are written where everything isn't sunshine, puppies and rainbows. I guess the main thing that holds me up is worry that the rape content is there just for 'character development', cause if there's one thing that makes me rage and that I feel is one of the laziest forms of storytelling, it's that. I mean I have a lot of useless information about series I've never watched or read just by my enjoyment of trivia and such. I could be wrong about this cause I've only seen it in passing but... Berserk stuff, no idea if Sim has gotten here so I don't know how to make the warning:

But I've seen in passing that Griffith rapes Caska? If it happens solely for 'character development', I'm going to frown hard.

 

I know Sim laid it out nicely regarding Guts and Griffith's tropes and how they both defy them technically, which totally appeals to me as well. It's just a sort of storytelling that's always made me grunt and roll my eyes. Who knows, maybe I'll still finally bite the bullet and give it a go because the potential really intrigues me. I might just have to rage at you for a little bit to get it out of my system.

I think the post your referring to about Gatts and Griffith might have been one of mine if it's the one posted yesterday about their roles as the white and black knights. I know the way they break away from the traditional white and black knight roles is something I've spent a great deal thinking about.

The thing with Caska is one of the few things I have an issue with in Berserk and here's why: (spoiler for people who don't know about Caska)

Well I think the story has a legitimate reason for having the rape occur (as far as a story can have a legitmate reason for it) but I take issue with them taking one of the only strong female characters in the series and raping her into a vegetable state. It plays a huge role in the story in particular with Gatts development in the last half but it still just rubs me the wrong way in terms of handling a strong female character in a male dominated series.

Just a warning though..

If you do give it a shot I can promise you won't be able to Shut me up about it though X3 (Do it! :3)

You know my undying love for the theme of duality. This story is full of that theme.

I'm rather amazed on how the queerats turned out since at the start we are lead to believe they are just some beast in the wilds and that Squaler is just slightly above simple minded which we as things progress learn isn't the truth which really could be said about everything and everyone in SSY. Squealer is an amazing antagonist and even more so due to what we learn that he fight for is something that humans have fought for since the dawn of our existance. He's being human and it's only thanks to Saki that what Squealer did and believed might not be needed in the future and that if humanity want to, it can change and Saki is the person that will lay the first steps and since her position will be vital in the villages people will follow one way or another. Kiroumaru and Squealer didn't die or kill in vain.

I was pretty crushed that Spice and Wolf didn't get finished, it definitely deserved it. I added Maou Yuusha to my watch list, it sucks when you have to head canon things you like because they didn't get the proper send off they deserved. Head Canon Ahead:

Kraft and Holo so made it to the North, but only after catching that one noble woman and getting the money back. They found nothing left of Holo's home, but they did find a town relatively close by where Kraft would open a shop there and become largely successful (in no small part due to his new business partner and wife). Eventually, Kraft decided that he enjoyed being a peddler more so he sold off his shop. Holo and he would continue their travels, eventually they found their way back to Rubens (the bird woman and chronicler) and they both learned how to make Kraft like Holo (it was revealed that Rubens wasn't always part bird, but rather learned it from the tales she gathered and did it so that she could live a lot longer than her life span would normally allow). Kraft and Holo were able to live happily ever after, forever... Why is everyone looking at me like that?

Compared to all the other emperor and political leaders in the alliance, Reinhard was a saint. Not only did he do so much reformation(there's a reason his own subjects loved him and how even Yang knew the empire was at its best), he had an admirably level of respect for his enemies like Yang.

I like that they still leave it open in terms of what the future holds, but you do get a strong sense of hope with Saki as a leader. I'm a firm believer that there are times you may not objectively be able to truly be moral, but what's important is not shying away from the truth and striving to make the right decision even when there may not be one. Will Saki bring a better futue? Who knows. I like to think so though.

No worries! Didn't bring it up to grill you.. I certainly can't be expected to remember who wrote each post. I'm only mentioning it because it's a topic I would like to go into much more detail over.

The Gatts/Griffith dynamic is pretty much on the sane level as Madoka/Nomura. Except with slightly less romantic implications (though they are arguably still there) and a focus on the white/black knight image as apposed to PMMM's god/Satan angle. Either way I could go on about either of those 2 series and topics for far too long.

That's one thing I like about sending my walls of ranting text to you though Ani, you tend to know and understand exactly why certain things drive me nuts.

Ghost in the Shell and Chihayafuru. Just by looking at them that will be one interesting combination and neither really sound like anything that I've watch too recently.
