Eh I thought Berserk kinda sucked also though, to be honest. A lot of the 'messed' up is kind of just tame in retrospect. For instance, <spoilers> I thought the first time oh my god the eclipse what a screwed up moment how is this happening. In retrospect though, most of the characters that died were kind of flimsy and it felt like they were set up to die beforehand, Ricket, etc. Plus, the band of the hawk was falling apart from really much earlier than the eclipse, many of the people had already died beforehand. I'd argue the more powerful and messed up moment was when Griffith rapes the princess, it's there when that tension between Guts and Griffith falls away completely and is replaced by Griffith the directionless killer. Plus, all the main characters survive the Eclipse at least, Casca, Guts, and Griffith, although each bears fairly deep scars and all, they still survive.
I mean, relative to what you see in anime generally or in media generally, sure, it's a lot more dramatic than that, but the limitations are there from my POV. Consequently, I'm kind of like... well... maybe Chobits (or whatever) has the edge on Berserk. It's not trying to be messed up, but it's just so cute it's hard to resist. The edginess in anime seems very contrived and manufactured for the most part. The heart though, is another story entirely.
just a few points.
Some minor Berserk spoilers ahead~~~
-Rickert doesn't die. In fact he's still one of the main characters
-of course it was planned out. The first few chapters take place post eclipse so he obviously knew it was going to happen. It is kind of the central point of the whole story.
-pretty sure none of the central members of the band of the hawk are killed before the eclipse
-Griffith didn't rape the princess, she's madly in love with him
-he did rape another character in a terrifying way though
-Griffith the directional killer? Did you read after the Eclipse...?
Be honest, you didn't actually read it did you? X3 Kefka I recommend you go read the last couple chapters of Berserk that have been posted. They will flat out disprove half of what you just said.
Well we have very different tastes. I can find a great deal of depth to the story despite how crude it can be. There are a number of characters that are quite well thought out and I find to have meaningful and interesting character arcs, sort of like what I mentioned about Gatts and Griffith in previous posts with Sim.
I'm familiar with lot's of clamps works from my childhood and I have a great deal of affection towards their anime's, but I still prefer story > cuteness and their anime's well not being particularly bad will never tickle my brain the way a story like Madoka Magical, or Shin Sekai Yori or Berserk or 999 could.
Anyways if your going into anime's with the preference towards cuteness and outfits I guess I can see why you'd find the edginess contrived or lacking in most of the stories (even for PMMM you said the cuteness factor helped a lot) but that seems more of a personal bias then an actual argument against those stories. I think anime can tell any type of story, the fact that it is "animated" shouldn't have any bearings on whether the story has to be childish, cute, deep, action filled or full of fan service, or whatever as I often hear is suggested.
I doubt we'll be exchanging our must watch lists anytime soon

but I do respect your opinion. I think it's neat that anime can pull in so many different types of people who have such difference standards tbh.
Sorry Sim I'll respond to your Berserk post next as soon as I get a chance. I'll try to get a response out on my break if I can.
