Nope, couldn't last. Need to reply asap.
So first...
@Chewin.
You don't know how glad I am that you're putting it in your favourites list, because boy, the problems you had with GitS aren't nearly as bad as 2nd GIG of which their 'Stand Alone' episodes are at a much better level. Also, instead of dealing with corporate politics, 2nd GIG focuses on international politics and Japan's place in the international arena. I think you'll like it a whole lot more.
And Tachi robots are glorious in 2ndGIG, they'll make you feel them feels at the end.
Tho' I find your lack of Batou disturbing.
And Motoko is my darling angel I will stalk from the distance. Did you know I make a guest appearance in the second episode of 2ndGIG? (lolz to those who've seen it.)
As for Fate... I'd go for Zero first. Just because Isi has warned me of the tone and it seems a massive contrast to what Fate/Zero is (a very dark anime.) For me and bro (who's Rah btw) to be DISTURBED by a certain level of CRAZY... well, yeah, it has to be gruesome.
@Bro
Good.
I'm glad you're enjoying it because that means I will most likely enjoy it too. I always love a good romance story
and Isi gives his thumbs up too.
@Anima
Planescape: Torment is, and will forever be, my favourite game of all time. I have so much love and respect for that piece of genius that I can't help but tear up at its end. Not because it's sad (which it is) but because the story is so masterfully crafted, that you can't help but become emotional from its sheer beauty. Especially if you have a fine appreciation for excellent writing.
Now for the big one...
*deep breath.*
ISI!
You're right that thing with the Princess was an emotional response triggered by Gatts. Griffith is very childish like that and gets all whiney when he doesn't get what he wants
I haven't seen that side of him much, but I wouldn't be surprised. Another flaw that adds to his character. I freakin' love Griffith ![]()
I personally do believe that Gatts role in the story is intended to some degree by the same force that guides Griffith for a couple reasons. For one I think their relationship is to a large extent one of the causes of Griffith's choice during the Eclipse, at least in the sense that it played a role in leading Griffith to that specific event (which also ties into the whole duality thing between them). The other thing is just how omnipetent the force controlling it all is, it seems to understand everything past, present and future to a scary degree and so far you've only seen a very limited piece of the puzzle in terms of what it is actually attempting to accomplish (which will tie into the thing about Griffith's morality later)
Fair enough. Because it also seemed he was meant to die (Gatts that is.) However, outside forces did intercept with this plan. However, either way you look at it, the idea works. Intended or not, both sides further strengthen the theme of duality between Gatts and Griffith.
In regards to Griffith's life being planned I'm talking about everything including his needs and wants, there is a reason Griffith is the God of dreams, which is something that is huge in the fantasy genre and for humanity in general, but he represents both the terrifying aspect of it as well as the wondrous aspect both of which are often connected in some form or the other. So let's talk a bit about WHAT Griffith specifically wants because it does not simply boil down to power for powers sake. Griffith wants to create the world he has seen in his dreams, he wants a kingdom, he wants a world of magic and one in which he is it's ruler and these are all desires he is intended to have. The Eclipse is a means to an end, it's the turning point and one that shows just how horrifying his dream can be and what he is willing to do to accomplish it, but the dream itself is a very human and understandable one which is what makes it so terrifying. Even the people around Griffith are drawn to that dream, in large part due to Griffith seemingly being able to accomplish the impossible.
I never took his motives as power for power's sake. When I look at Griffith I see a little of Reinhard from LotGH.
Both characters share this dream of absolute change, but in order to bring it about, power is needed. Like the Eclipse, power is just a means to an end.
However, I've not yet come to what he wants with this dream. Does he seek a better world? Or a utopia meant only for him? Reinhard accomplishes his conquest of the galaxy and reforms it for the better, despite the millions that had to die in the process.
But what of Griffith? Coming back to him being 'childish' he didn't really care about the consequences. His choice was given to him but he didn't care. It could be argued that in his state, his mind didn't work as well, but I'd call that BS. He seemed perfectly aware of what was happening and the 'sacrifice' that had to be made.
Is he wrong? That is a very complicated question that I think is more grey then the Eclipse makes it appear, which I know sounds almost impossible considering how horrifying the Eclipse was, but the truth is that the Eclipse was only the start of Griffith's dream, the fuel to light the fire and the rest of the story deals with that dream itself, again keeping in mind that everything that happens from this point on will always be contrasted to the Eclipse from the POV of the audience and Gatts, although as far as the rest of the world knows Griffith is still this legendary figure.
Wrong? Yes, that's complicated.
I'm currently (but slowly) reading Game of Thrones and Philosophy. It deals with the books (despite its title) and by god is moral and ethical philosophy simply crazy. I have no idea how people go to university with that in mind. This sh*t is so deep, you could bury India in it.
There is simply so many points of views to look at we could be here for a 100 pages discussing whether Griffith was making a moral choice or not. Is the long term better than the short term consequences? Is Griffith's dream really worth human life? How much is human life worth?
Breaking down these issues and addressing them individually is not a task I could complete xD
A lot of what I just said about Griffith is also mirrored in Gatts except almost in the exact opposite sense which ties back into duality. I could go into the details for Gatts ebut I'll leave that for later since this is already turningnintoba post far too long for something I wrote up on a phone. I would like to talk more about this later when I get a chance since the concept of duality doesn't dissapear with the Eclipse, if anything it only escalates further between the two.
Gatts reminds me so much of Geralt of Rivia it's not even funny. But there's something more to him that makes him that bit more tragic.
Chris once gave me a parallel between Breaking Bad and the Sopranos. How one is about a man heading from light to darkness and the other of a man trying to leave the darkness to turn to light.
Gatts really seems to be a man struggling with both. Obviously he is disturbed mentally, it's evident in almost everything the art represents. His blood-lust, his love to kill... but then again, he's a good man who's trying not to slip into his darker side but lives in a world where his good side won't let him survive.
Edit: Just a quick after thought. I can't help but feel Berserk is a story designed just for people like you and me who are drawn to the fantasy/dark fantasy genre. There's a lot of subtext that can fly over your head with this series if you don't understand that need to dream and yearning for the fantastical imagination as well as the horror that can potentially come with it.
Indeed. I called Berserk a horror story and I'm sticking to it. The imagery is grotesque, it's powerful and can put many people off. Rape, sex, torture, violence... unfortunately it might seem something the mangaka put there to look edgy, but hell no, it's far from it. Berserk really knows how to deal with all these things well and so far, I've seen some pretty f*cked up things and nothing has given me the impression of "omg this is stupid."
Probably for the best. I'm trying to be vague as to not give anything away but it'll be easier to talk once you've seen more. I was planning on writing more once I got home today but perhaps I'll wait for you to get caught up.Just came back...
SOOO MANY BOOKS TO READ ><
I'll read Berserk before I start replying.

NARUTO!
So yeah, watched a bit more today. And I got to say, they were really good episodes with character development everywhere. So yeah, thumbs up. Now to see how they're going to deal with the end of this arc.

So there was this picture comparing 'demons' and 'monsters' and whatnot from different mediums to anime. Using examples like Black Butler and Highschool animes...
They were all pretty-things.
And I was like..
Do you even Berserk?

I find the lack of "jelly donuts" in the picture disturbing.
In the meanwhile, enjoy this portrait I made of Geth
*art*
I think I could easily surpass Miura in a year or two.

I'm in outmost awe of your talent bro!

As you can see, it's not 100% accurate.
And yes, bro. I am talent personaifeid.
See? My spelling is even better!
I never get confused when people admire my intelligent mind, be it today or from years back. Same goes for the comical and perverted side.
You know what our problem is, Chewin?
Geniuses like us are just too humble to be appreciated.
Guest_simfamUP_*
Perverted side, eh?
I doubt I can match either of your intellect.
But perversion is my game.
I can make Jimmy Savile look like Clemence of Hungary Nelson Mandella Jesus Ghandi in comparison.

You know me too well.

Don't ignore that photo full of sexy, Chewin. Give in to the perv side of the force!
Oh, and I'd really say that GitS is really S1&2 combined. One follows the other and completes/continues the development and characterisation of the cast.
Good thinking.
You still need to watch FMAB.
FMAB is glorious.
I also know how to push Chewin's buttons.

Well then, you won't be disappointed hah. I admit I didn't like Farnese much to begin with. She grew on me a bit though.BERSERK!

Which season/episodes?
Shippuden is awesome. I watched the first 10 episodes, but I need to finish One Piece season 1
