Just watched the first ep of the new Terraformars anime. Didn't catch the vibe of the original at all, sadly. Might get better, yet doubtful, as no studio apparently makes good seinen anymore, all's shounened-up.
I found all of the other characters to be far more likable than Kanda, I actually wanted to smack and yell at Kanda when he started acting dickish and began yelling at Mashiro, because you know, she wasn't at fault for anything, despite that I didn't hate him either.
So it pretty much goes without saying that Kanda didn't click with me either, but I think that was done on purpose and is a large point of the anime.

They took a normal person (Kanda) and threw him in with all of these seemingly troubled people (people with social issues of some sort or another). The kicker was that the seemingly troubled people, weren't all that troubled compared to the normal guy, I mean if you think about it they all knew what the wanted out of life (what they wanted to do) and the normal guy has absolutely no clue on what he wants to do. To me it seemed that he latched on to making video games out of a desperation to have something to call his own talent, because he was surrounded by incredibly talented people.
I believe the main theme of the show is that: You probably aren't going to be truly happy until you get out there and find what you want to do
Spoiler
The people around Kanda
. You won't necessarily succeed and you'll probably have to work your ass off compared to others just to attempt to reach their level, but you should try

Kanda, Aoyama and Rita working hard to keep up, but failing
. Times are going to be tough and you won't always get your way, but even so you should strive to be extraordinary and let your happy memories carry you forward
Spoiler
Sakurasou nearly being torn down, Kanda and Aoyama failing, failure to get the signatures to prevent Sakurasou's demolition. The senior class graduating leading to Misaki and Jin leaving, but the others carrying on their traditions.

I was super disappointed that the romance wasn't resolved too. I don't know if they wussed out, wanted to leave it open for another season or if they didn't solve it to show that Kanda still didn't know what he wanted (in this case who).
Of course I could be reading into this way to much and it could just be as simple as this:
Alriight, can quote this now that I'm done.
First, a few comments.
1. The anime is really solid. It's consistent with fleshed out characters and by the end of it, manages to touch them feels.
2. The only thing that the anime suffers from is Kanda. Who would have been a great character if they hadn't forced him to be such an emotional dude.
3. One last critique. I wish they fleshed out some of the minor characters more, they were a lot more interesting than Kanda.
4. Cats are cool. Kanda isn't
5. That graduation ceremony was a bloody tear-jerker and the best episode in the series.
Okaaaaaay. So anybody who wants a solid romance anime, try Sakurasou no Pet. Don't expect Clannad though, but you won't be disappointed.
Now, in regards to Kanda. The thing about him is that he's just too bland. They try to create some depth for the character, and on paper, there is, however, having him over-react to any situation like if it were the last day on Earth just takes away from the drama. This is why I preferred the side characters more. They were far more believable and rational, so you could empathise with them.
But Kanda?
Shiina's not in the house and he acts like she was f*cking murdered by the rape police.
Now take Gintama for example. Gintoki is really nonchalant 80% of the time. He gets angry here and there, but never to the extreme. So when you do see him serious, when you do see him emotional it really gets to you. It's a side of him you don't see often and it's great that he has it.
Just imagine if Tomoya from Clannad went on a rampage for any little thing. Then that episode where he really took it out on his father would NEVER have been as impactful. Humans hide things, and many people hide their emotions. Hell, I do it all the time (which is why I allow myself to let go with fiction.)
I've been so hurt I've felt like freaking vomiting, but I don't even blink xD I just laugh it off like it never happened.
Loads of people are like that. Sure, there are some that aren't, but from what I've seen, the majority bottle up their emotions.
So yeah, Kanda never really clicked with me. But the others did. Especially Jin. I saw tons of comments calling him a scumbag. Jesus, it's like they've never seen a promiscuous man in their lives. The important thing is that he abandoned all that crap for Misaki. -.-
The anime ends nicely. The romance isn't exactly resolved, but it doesn't leave you unsatisfied. I think I would have if I hadn't cared more about Jin and Misaki more than Kanda and whoever he chose. But still, what really got me invested wasn't the romance (which is what I watched it for in the first place) but the relationship and bond of everybody in Sakurasou... which I guess was the anime's main goal in the end.
I suspect I wont be watching anime for some time now.
That's about the same how I'd describe Sakurasou aswell. It's solid, not bad nor amazing. It's not a waste of time but not something that will make you want to name your first born after a character or something insane like that. Kanada is the blandest possible protagonist which probably make sense since he's "supposed" to show how special the rest of Sakurasou is but he could at least be amusing..
I would so totally fall for someone love Misaki xD
I've said it and I'll say it again. In regards to 'naming children.' My one and only motivation to spawn one of those hellish creatures is to call him Zach.

Hmm I'm not familiar with the source, impression I get from just the anime is that it's super hammed up in a way that's entertaining in its own way, though I feel my entertainment might be at the expense of peoples who think it's supposed to be taken seriously.
Saku looks like fun. Might take a look at it once I have the chance. Gonna finish Demon King and Hero first, which is pretty good and which I recommend for people who like war scenarios with a more political focus.
The soundtrack is appropriate for the settings. The movie is a pack of few episodes in the middle of the series. It's GORY. So what was awful about it? The only awful thing in Berserk is Griffith, until the real sh*t is released.
Mind you I've only watched the original anime, but that's just it, they are trying to jam so much into so little time. Basically its just one battle scene after another, they try to include key moments from a character standpoint, but there is no build up of any kind. Everything feels rushed, and more importantly the dialogue is awful. I wasn't a fan of the animation either, I know the original anime was criticized for its animation but I rather like it for the most part.

I had to drop that show. The hero is such an obnoxiously gutless dude. Can't deal with it.
Is that this might have a romance between Shiro / Rin instead of Saber, which is a shame since Shiro / Saber is my anime OTP. I haven't played the visual novel, so I have no clue if this is the case, but I kinda get the feeling it is so since there are three routes in the game so... :/

Well I wouldn't disagree. The romance aspect isn't the shows strength and I only enjoy it mostly b/c of Demon King which I find kawaii! But yeah, the hero is someone I can barely stomach. Anime sure tend to have a hard time making great / decent protagonists. Or at least the most I've seen.

I am basically in the same boat as you are. While I would want my Saber / Shiro ship again, it would make sense from a development point of view to create UWB for Rin / Shiro and the upcoming movie adaptation Heaven's Feel having Sakura / Shiro. That way everyone is happy.
But hey! Maybe they decide to go the UBW route while still keeping the Saber / Shiro aspect. You never know

It did seem like a pretty good show outside of that. Just, in this case that aspect was too much of a dealbreaker. And I've sat through the likes of Shinji and Yukiteru.
I think I had to stop it when I found out that he straight up abandoned the girl for two straight years because 'adventure' even though he had teleportation magic and was actually coming home every night and secretly getting meals from the maid while he hid in a ****** broom closet or something.

Makes sense when you put it that way. Well gonna have fingers crossed either way.

Well it is certainly. And lol at Shinji and Yuki! I can totally see why some people will stop watching with protagonists like that. Thankfully Yuki develops and becomes more mature in the end, so I ended up liking him well enough. Shinji though I just can't stomach!
Only up to Episode 5 in Demon King and Hero, so hopefully the Hero develops as it goes along.
