Alriight, can quote this now that I'm done.
First, a few comments.
1. The anime is really solid. It's consistent with fleshed out characters and by the end of it, manages to touch them feels.
2. The only thing that the anime suffers from is Kanda. Who would have been a great character if they hadn't forced him to be such an emotional dude.
3. One last critique. I wish they fleshed out some of the minor characters more, they were a lot more interesting than Kanda.
4. Cats are cool. Kanda isn't
5. That graduation ceremony was a bloody tear-jerker and the best episode in the series.
Okaaaaaay. So anybody who wants a solid romance anime, try Sakurasou no Pet. Don't expect Clannad though, but you won't be disappointed.
Now, in regards to Kanda. The thing about him is that he's just too bland. They try to create some depth for the character, and on paper, there is, however, having him over-react to any situation like if it were the last day on Earth just takes away from the drama. This is why I preferred the side characters more. They were far more believable and rational, so you could empathise with them.
But Kanda?
Shiina's not in the house and he acts like she was f*cking murdered by the rape police.
Now take Gintama for example. Gintoki is really nonchalant 80% of the time. He gets angry here and there, but never to the extreme. So when you do see him serious, when you do see him emotional it really gets to you. It's a side of him you don't see often and it's great that he has it.
Just imagine if Tomoya from Clannad went on a rampage for any little thing. Then that episode where he really took it out on his father would NEVER have been as impactful. Humans hide things, and many people hide their emotions. Hell, I do it all the time (which is why I allow myself to let go with fiction.)
I've been so hurt I've felt like freaking vomiting, but I don't even blink xD I just laugh it off like it never happened.
Loads of people are like that. Sure, there are some that aren't, but from what I've seen, the majority bottle up their emotions.
So yeah, Kanda never really clicked with me. But the others did. Especially Jin. I saw tons of comments calling him a scumbag. Jesus, it's like they've never seen a promiscuous man in their lives. The important thing is that he abandoned all that crap for Misaki. -.-
The anime ends nicely. The romance isn't exactly resolved, but it doesn't leave you unsatisfied. I think I would have if I hadn't cared more about Jin and Misaki more than Kanda and whoever he chose. But still, what really got me invested wasn't the romance (which is what I watched it for in the first place) but the relationship and bond of everybody in Sakurasou... which I guess was the anime's main goal in the end.
I suspect I wont be watching anime for some time now.
Berserk has grabbed my by the balls.
