Anyways I'm all for dark senses of humor and being inexplicably drawn to the macabre, and I'd gladly argue against anyone who felt those type of stories didn't have any value. I love having something dark to scratch that itch I think most people have to some degree or another, especially when it's handled well like in Dexter (the first half at least) or in works like H.P. Lovecrafts stories. The manga me and Sim have been discussing, Berserk, is very much like that as well. I'd imagine there are people out there who would think me sick for being able to enjoy this series, let alone loving it to the extent I do.

I'm sure you have already, but have you played the Souls series? Demons or Dark, whatever. It has lots of weird macabre moments, so many mob designs and things like that which just make the hairs stand on end.

I have, although arguably not enough. Those games are masterpieces in terms of setting up atmosphere as far as I'm concerned. Plus as a fan of Super Ghouls and Ghosts-esque games these ones are right up my alley with the gameplay difficulty.

There's one game I still need to play that is also a damn near masterpiece as far as I can tell in terms of the macabre and story, but I suspect Sim will lynch me if I say which one it is.

I'm saying you can put down the spines you damn porcupine.

Let's not drown the thread in a bathtub and just talk about what we usually talk about, you know like funny things or Madoka gif spam.

What?! Guh oh well...

Gosh I guess there's ultimately quite a list of dark fantasy gothic macabre out there, in some ways. All of HP Lovecraft, The Witcher, Game of Thrones, Berserk, I'd say Let Us Cling Together, FFT, Demons and Dark Souls.

There are so many moments in demon souls like you go down the tunnel and there's this enormous armored maggot and you go WAH!!

Then you go and hit up the next tunnel and theres a maggot 4 TIMES THE SIZE of the previous one. /Faint.

Very nice list if I do say so myself. The only one I haven't played is Let Us Cling Together, so I may have to look into that since you bundled it with so many other stories that I enjoyed so much.

I can't help but laugh and think of some person going "A giant maggot? 0_o How could this possibly get any worse?" and then walking into another room to find an even larger one :P

Btw the game I was talking about was Planescape Torment. I've only played through the start of it, although I suspect this game is everything I'm looking for in a story. One day... One day (probably just going to wait until the new one is about to come out and play through both at once)

Man, I feel like I'm watching a bunch of kids discover sex or something. Planescape Torment would be in my top 10 western games period, let alone WRPGs.

I don't know how it plays now but I suspect it's still more fun than 98% of what's out there.

Let Us Cling Together is very GoT type atmosphere, but a video game so <spoilers> one of the choices is do you massacre the innocent civilian population in secret in order to give your side the "moral highground," or betray them and become an outcast. You can also murder your sister who is the current Queen and take her place as King. There's also calamitous thing like this holy paladin/mentor type figure eventually being tortured so brutally, you find him again an amnesiac vegetative man who stares out at the sea for hours on end.

I've heard the creator was directly influenced by GoT because there are references like Milk of the poppy in there, but I don't know that for a fact.

The PS version was riddled with kinda problematic gameplay things (I once re-loaded for the same fight about 40 times), but I heard the PSP version fixed a bunch of that.

No no no no no.

The games are only thematically related. Play Planescape Torment now. The more time you have between the two to digest the original and get it out of your system, the better the upcoming one will taste (well, unless the devs screw it up).

You don't want to eat 2 large lasagnas back to back, you won't be able to appreciate the second one as much. Plus your stomach will hate you. It's the same with games.

And it's criminal to have access to Planescape Torment and not be playing it. Just criminal.

Edit:

Fine, since this is the anime thread ...

Not playing Planescape Torment is not allowed!

Excuses are not allowed!

Delays are not allowed!

@The King of Dust

****. You're right. All the good ones takes months to get out of my system. 2 at once is going to be too much for me.

The cherry ontop of the cake is the BG and NWN are 2 of my favorite games so you'd think I'd have tried this a long time ago.

Reminds me, I've heard (read: read) some rumors that following the GuP movie that's coming, a second season for the anime is supposed to air shortly thereafter.

Hoping those are true.

Also hoping the second season would deal with a more advanced tank technology (say Cold War era tanks, and a third season goes for full on modern tank goodness!).

I haven't been paying attention then. Going on the Cold War comment, Katyusha shall strike at dawn...

The next manga that is also the best comic ever that I will have him read has no good scans online so he will only have to post the words of his fangasms all over this thread.

God help us.
