I typically go sub, but that has more to do with preference a for reading than going off of spoken word. It'd have to be reeeeealy bad dubbing for me to take sub just for the japanese voicing.Oh and yes, dub or sub?
Angel Beats is pretty good. I'd suggest it.

Whatever floats your boat! I usually go for sub but most of the voices in the dub were rather solid so it's not like you get a definitely worse experience

I'd go with what Rah said. Chihayafuru has a lot more strengths to it then Angel Beats, but when in doubt I usually suggest the shorter series, and yes, if there's on thing it nails down it's the feels.

Another thing I forgot to mention that I really liked about Chihayafuru is how they handle the romance aspect. For one the love triangle doesn't feel cliche which is surprising considering I usually have a raw hatred for love triangles in anime.
What I really like about it is how the whole love story feels like something you would hear in one of the poems. The whole show has an almost poetic feel to it in that sense which fits rather well with the game of Karuta. The show like the sport itself doesn't focus on the romance as much as the game and yet it is almost always there in some way.
Ani had to spend a few hours dealing with me spamming her with images from the TRS manga followed by "jfjjdbjksbjdndbkd hnnnnnnnng so good" messages yesterday
all coherent thoughts fade away for me when dealing with this series so I at least *try* to limit my gushing here.

In most cases even the notion of a love triangle is enough to make me want to flip tables and drop whatever media that try to deal with it but in Chihaya it doesn't at all feel like one despite it being very much one. It's a thing that just doesn't get shoved in our faces once every 3 min to remind us that it exist. It happen and then Karuta happen and Karuta is clearly more important!
Coherent thoughts are meaningless anyways when awesome PMMM stuff is related. We all know the gushing language anyway!

My suggestion is watch the first couple of episodes dub and sub and then go with what you like more. Don't expect Cowboy Bebop or Brotherhood level dub though.

I just left. Not even to pee, I just left and waited for about 3 minutes for that load of crap to go by.

I hated the movie tbh. I mean it was gorgeous and had some good parts but waaaaaay too artificially bloated. I mean.. Did we really need 30 extra minutes of Legolas killing orcs? Isn't that what LotR is for? Also it depresses me how weak the orcs are. 1elf = if not > then like 50 orcs, who supposedly spend their entire lives in combat and fighting. I'm not really going to tumble over that. It's a solid argument. Those things never really bothered me as long as the plot was solid.
Which it was.
For the most part.
I still emphasise that its a children's book so it's bound to be 'lighter' and far more fantastical/out of this world than say, LOTR.
GitS > the Hobbit though, and the book. As much as I love the tale, people seem to immortalise it in some odd sense of nostalgia. It's funny since those are the same dudes who've never read any of Tolkien's other works and have probably read a library consisting on three other books plus contemporary literature for their education.
ETA:
To be honest. Apart from that, the only part that bothered me was Beorn's pitiful screentime. And it saddens me that crap like the romance was put in place for something as important as Beorn.
