Whilst not anime or manga, I still feel this is an appropriate place to ask. Can any of you recommend me some good Japanese fantasy books, written by Japanese authors? Most that I come across is usually written by Western authors. I love Japanese mythology and would love to read some books about it, or set in fantasy world's similar to Princess Mononoke.

Shin Sekai Yori and Brave Story.

I don't know if I'd say they're much like Princess Mononoke, but they're both great Japanese fantasy novels.

Rah, I feel your reviews have not adequately emphasized this portion of the show.

 

Need to leave some of the gems in it and I did.. mention swimsuits in the last post! In my greatness (cough) I let Bmw get to share that part as last time anything like this happened. Sharing is caring and all that stuff. Though I can always repent by sharing this one gif!

I'm insanely impressed that Chihaya managed to get to the quarter-finals with her left hand. Obviously she had to run into Shinobu and even though Chihaya has improved a lot she's still injured and Shinbou is still queen. Result was as predicted a crushing win for Shinobu (yay) and Chihaya will have to recover and try again. If I was teaching Chihaya I'd lose my mind over her playing with an injury. While impressive and her passion is something special she's reckless and did bet far more than she could possibly ever gain. But if she was reasonable with Karuta it wouldn't be Chihaya so.. it's just best to be happy she didn't get any more injured

 

Pleased to see Nishida at least being aware that he's good but lazy. Mashima is the one he should learn from right now because that work ethic that Mashima got is what Nishida is missing. Speaking of Mashima, in the semi-final and I already feel like he'll win the B-class tournament. As said before he keep on growing and has the momentum. Hanano.. well she did play and win some games so yay there I suppose, she's really a character that has so much left to prove and she's easily the one of the club that I care the least about. She need to do something impressive soon!

I hate this stuff. I've seen it so often, it never adds to the anime, it's pointless, just pointless fanservice.

 

So, no one else is going to mention the lack of fanservicy bounce?

If what you want is Eastern mythology fantasy, you could also check out the Twelve Kingdoms novels. Although as far as English releases are concerned, they only cover the same stories that appeared in the Anime. And some of them, like Sea of Shadow, the first novel, aren't very good. Skies of Dawn is pretty great though, but it's pretty much fully covered in the anime, with only minor differences.

Tonan no Tsubasa is also great, and never made it into the anime, but AFAIK never got translated in english. It was released in french though, and also in german IIRC.
