I found Hunter X Hunter too silly.

12 year old )spikey-haired) kid legally entering into fights with older, heavier and more experienced veterans?

"And in tonights fight - in the left corner, weighting at 300 pounds, the heavyweight champion Mike Tyson! And in the other corner, weighting a 20pounds - little Suzy from across the street!.. Now begin!"

Hunter x Hunter is one giant deconstruction of shonen adventure/battle manga, so yeah it's good that you think it's "silly".

Also you act as if Gon could win against Hisoka or at least fight even with him, Gon was going to lose no matter what but he had to face his fears. Hisoka also made Gon keep a promise to get one strong punch on him. Gon has not been in that many real fights and has won even less.

Gon and Killua are not normal children, they are Hunters first and everything else second, but they still do act like real children most of the time. It's really funny to think the only reason they are kids is to appeal to kids, since the series is not that popular with children.

Hell I would not let a kid read Hunter x Hunter, it's too deep and dark of a story for kids. Death Note is far better for kids than Hunter X Hunter is.=]

@eroeru Oh I just saw the newer Hunter x Hunter's new episode, and I got to say you really are wrong if you think it has no personalty or that it's not as dark as the old show.

Nice gifs. ^_^

Well, at least the visualization isn't as interesting most of the times. But I might be wrong in the long run - it might be exactly the thing you'll "get" only when you understand the series properly.

It makes more sense than 90% of shonen, is better explained than most ( you have actual gods and power from starts/cosmo) and the age of characters is never mentioned (and they are drawn looking older).

As I said - it is my gulty pleasure.
I'd never argue it was great or deep.

And b.t.w - if normal human beigns are boring, I guess that would make Spike Speigel a boring and uninteresting character?

Once again, I never said normal characters are boring. I said if ALL characters were normal in EVERY story then things MAY get boring after a while.

Ergo Proxy is kinda weird tbh. I like the setting, but it felt at times like it was trying too hard to be some kind of deep and meaningful philosophical thing. It didn't help that the main character is rather unlikeable.

If I remember rightly, it starts off a little slow, but speeds up/gets more interesting towards the end, both in terms of character development and the plotline - although it does get even more confusing. The actual drawing/animation was pretty nice. I'm not really a huge anime buff though, so I wouldn't know how it compares to the other cyberpunk/futuristic animes.

Slight Spoilers Alert:
It's set in some kind of post-apocalyptic world where everyone lives in these self-contained bubble-cities. It's a bit of a dystopic society, with people grown from artificial wombs and having to fulfill their ordained roles etc. They also hardly ever leaving their little dome/bubble city. It follows Re-l (some sort of police/detective) and Vincent (who is.. special) who end up on some sort of journey outside of the city to find out answers.

I think they purposely left the audience in the dark so that like the characters, they slowly come to understand what's going on. It can make it a little confusing/annoying, but also sort of rewarding (so I won't spoil anymore for you). I'm also a little drunk atm, so I don't know if I'm doing the show justice haha.

On another note, I've been watching a few anime movies recently - have I missed anything that is really recommended?
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal (Samurai X)
Berserk: The Egg of the King
Evangelion 1.0 & 2.0
Ninia Scroll
Vampire Hunter D & Vampire Hunter D: Blood Lust
Sword of the Stranger
Advent Children
Vexille

Off the top of my head, I've also watched most of the Studio Ghibli films
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Ghost in a Shell
FLCL
Ergo Proxy
Avatar: the last airbender/legend of korra (if that counts as anime)
and I might start The Last Exile soon;

But I'm mostly looking for standalone movies/OVAs or relatively short anime series atm since I don't really have all that much time to waste.

One of the main protagonists, but it's mostly about Vincent. I still consider her to be the main character in the series, due to her being one of my favorite characters to appear in an anime though :P.

Which is weird because he seemed like such an irrelivent character in the begining.

Ergo Proxy is great. Moreso, don't get annoyed by name-drapping and pretentiousness, and you might be really enjoying it in its originality and awesomeness.

Hey now, some people here don't know how to read.;)

Also Spike Spiegel(that's how you spell it by the way) is not that normal.:innocent:

@eroeru Yeah you are right, if you read Hunter x Hunter and then watch the newer show you would understand better.

Vision of Escaflowne (26 episodes) - watch it or DIE.

Luie the Rune Soldier (24 I think)

Legend of Galactic Heroes - 120 episodes (or was it 140?)

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (still the best of all macross. Period)

Excel Saga (26) - the original weirdness anime

Tytania (12 episodes I think? not a bad show)

Irresponsible Captain Taylor - good, but somewhat forgettable in the end.

Planetes - definate reccomendation. The Apollo 13 of anime... only more interesting

Monster - go. Watch. NOW.

Starship Operators - good idea, average execuation, some silly moments. Otherwise good.

..
and ...ummm...Mad Bull 37? :devil::devil:

The new Cyborg 009 movie is almost out in Japan, it looks like it could be good.

Yeah that's Keji Kamiyama's work, just based on looks it comes off feeling a bit like Ghost in the Shell.

Also I like the new designs and everything(of course I like the old designs better) but I really don't care for the way Jet looks, he doesn't even look a bit like him.:?

Looks flashy. And well-done.

It probably builds upon the "action-heroes with differing powers" device. Would be much suited for a video-game.

Probably? Cyborg 009 was one of the first things to ever do that, way back in the 60's.

It's a classic manga/anime and superhero story.

It's a great series if you like the old superhero type stories.

It's got some good themes too. I mean you got war machines trying to stop the a-holes who made them into war machines from starting World War 3 and making a profit off of said WW3. Awesome stuff right there.
