Man, getting back to Chewin's question before... I don't really know what I could say that isn't already in the anime. Or I just don't simply understand what he wants from the answer xD man I'm dense. That's why it confuses me. If the anime is anything like the manga you should have the full picture, so I don't know what to add xD

To me, Akame ga Kill/Kiru has never been more than a good battle manga. It has its heroes, its villains and of course, its battles. Though I guess it does a pretty good job at adding layers to the fundamentals of shounen which is why I guess its popular (at least over here.)
The Jaegars are a good example of this. A rival faction for the protagonists who are simply another group of good people doing what they think is right. On some level, the dynamic between Night Raid and the Jaegars is very similar to that of Yang Wenli and Reinhard. That's really what really sells it for me.
Themes such as oppression aren't really explored, it's all very simple stuff with that extra spice (like the touch of politics here and there.) I guess the death factor is a lot higher than other shounen, which creates a lot of suspense in its panels, especially when things go a lot quicker and you really can't guess what's going to happen next.
Esdes/Esdeath is a likeable villain.
I guess.
I mean, yeah, on a superficial level she's fracking awesome, kawaii, sexy and just plain adorable. But keep in mind that she is a damned sadist and torture is her pass time 
but it's cool when morality comes into play, no matter how simple it is. Again, it really does those extra layers to shine a little brighter than other battle manga.
So yeah... unless I'm missing something, that's about it. Aside from the Jaegers, Akame ga Kill is just a really good battle manga with a decent plot to boot.

From the passion with which some people denounce SAO, you'd think the anime transcended its medial existence and punched people in their private places.
It's hardly deserving that. I know you can't account for taste, but people should also make the distinction between something being subjectively bad and objectively bad. SAO is hardly objectively bad. The Fairy Dance arc is its weak link, but the Gun Gale arc was a step up again and the Caliber arc is going to be stepping into the ring again though it obviously won't reach the same level as the original arc did, for obvious reasons.

Honestly one of the main reasons people are annoyed by it (disregarding the obvious flaws like the **** protagonist and a few other things) is because it performs so well.
I mean look at crunchyroll after the last episode (that many consider to be the worst of the season). It's second ahead of massively better shows like akame ga kill, log horizon and fate/staynight. These are currently the 3 most praised ongoing animes in this thread and it's trouncing them.
I like SAO it's a fun mostly enjoyable show some plot stupidity here and there and one horrendous arc but in no way do I consider it worthy of the position it has.

Can't expect everyone to get out of their comfort zone. Most people simply watch the mainstream shows and stick to them until the next big hit comes along and miss the little pearls going on at the sidelines.

It's stakes forced upon a situation when we could've had a more laid back arc about playing the damn game and relaxing, considering the last arc was about a serial killer, and the next arc is about a little girl dying of aids we need a bit of a buffer.
